The city council in Anchorage held a special session and voted on who would be acting mayor. They chose, shockingly for Alaskans, an openly gay woman who has only lived there for nine years and who is somewhat progressive in her views. On top of that, she comes from California, which is like waving a red flag for most Alaskans. Anchorage has always been all over the board with city council members and mayors, and Ethan Birkowitz was a Democrat, but this is a real first. I wish her well.
