Mayweather vs. Hatton!

Mayweather says he’s coming out of retirement to fight Ricky Hatton.

That’s one short retirement.

Dancing Mayweather will make Hatton chase him all night in a boring fight.
The pound for pound bests lately have been boring. When Roy Jones held that fictional title, he fought nobodies and danced around the ring. When he finally stopped to fight ,he got his clock cleaned.

Ricky Hatton is my favorite boxer, so I’m a little biased!

I don’t see Mayweather winning this one, honestly. He’s just not ‘all that’ in the ring. I do have to say that he is a decent fighter, though. Even though I’m not a fan of his.
He’s nothing but a lot of hype and big talk. Then again, that’s all part of boxing!

I think Hatton will take down Mayweather before the final round.
Hatton won’t back down from Mayweather, which is probably what Mayweather is hoping for, somewhere in the back of his mind.
Backing down is just not Hatton’s style.
Hatton has BIG style when it comes to boxing, and Mayweather just seems to me that he likes to prance around the ring, for as long as he can get away with it, and then only fight when he has to.

Hatton and Mayweather are two of the best boxers out there, so I’m hoping it’s going to be a great fight!

If it happens, I WILL be watching!

I’m surprised that this fight is even this far along. I completely expected Mayweather to just retire and be done with it. It’s not going to be a very fun fight, I fear. Mayweather doesn’t want to trade blows. I do think that people are going to find out that Hatton is better than people think he is, though.
A MUCH better fight would be de la Hoya and Hatton. It’d be better for everyone involved (if it weren’t for…you know…a belt on the line).

Mayweather will try to dance like a butterfly.

Hatton will try to sting like a bee.

It’ll either be the best fight in fucking ages or the dullest.

This could be a great fight. Hatton’s got pretty good legs, and doesn’t mind walking through punches. If there’s one guy who has a chance to stop Floyd from running, it’s Hatton.

I agree De La Hoya - Hatton would probably be better.

You know what would be a great fight? Hatton-Gatti.

I read the title, and what I thought I saw was Merryweather (the Disney fairy) vs. Rondo Hatton (the 30s bit actor with acromegaly).

My money would have been on Hatton.

Thought I’d give this one a bump for the fight this weekend. I’m a big Hatton fan and really hope he can pull it off. The UK press have really been talking up Ricky’s chances in the last couple of weeks - unfortunately there is a sense that they are trying to convince themselves as much as their readers. One thing for sure is that Ricky looks in great physical and mental shape - he’s confident and easy going and looks like he’ll fight his best fight. He’s also very underrated - he’s got good skills and movement to go with the straight-ahead pressure style he is known for.

Its tough to say just how good Mayweather is in some respects - he’s never really been tested. His first fight with Castillo is famous for being close, but that’s all it was. He’s never been genuinely knocked down, never been on queer st or taken into deep waters. Sustained pressure is unknown territory for him, as he seems to be that good that no fighter has figured him out yet. Can Ricky be the man to do it?

A lot depends on the referee. Ricky is a rough fighter, a killer on the inside. If the ref allows them to clinch then Ricky can go to work on getting Floyd a liver transplant. If he is fast to break them up then Floyd will probably dance his way to the decision.

As a fellow boxing fan, I’m looking forward to this, too. Even though I’m a Yank, I’m rooting for Hatton all the way. I don’t know if he can pull it off, though. Mayweather is supremely talented and Hatton has struggled in a few of his fights. The thing about boxing is that you never know who will win until the bell rings, so I’m hoping Hatton can pull it off.

While I agree this will be an exciting fight, I remember masses of contests in which we all knew perfectly well who would win well before the fight.
I’m thinking of potential stars who are fed a diet of bums at the start of their career, so they can amass an ‘impressive’ unbeaten record before the big payday.

Andre Berto comes to mind right now.

True, but you can’t think that Hatton falls into this category. His fights with Tszyu and Castillo were against top-rated fighters, and even lesser foes such as Collazo, Urango, Tackie, and Maussa were far from bums. I don’t think Hatton is on the same level as Mayweather in the skill department, but he’s fought some decent folks.

I’m from the UK, so I noticed that Frank Bruno and Amir Khan were certainly ‘nursed’ at the start of their careers after they turned professional.

Hatton started with a 1st round KO v Colin McAuley, then had 11 further KO’s in his next 16 fights. I think these results were eminently predictable!

He didn’t fight Tszyu, Collazo, Urango, Tackie or Maus until he’d had 38 fights spread over 8 years.

Great fight with the much better fighter winning. Mayweather was at a different level.

From what it sounds like, Mayweather clearly beat him. If that’s the case when I see it, that will be impressive indeed. Maybe Mayweather is undoubtedly the best pound-for-pound fighter out there and one of the best 5 fighters ever.

Me too—well, actually, I was thinking “Rondo Hatton vs the helmsman from Enterprise?”

Aw, hell…I still would have watched it. I probably would have watched Rondo Hatton as the helmsman on Enterprise.

Well, I guess Mayweather really is that good :frowning:
He literally is one level above, has another gear he can go into that others cannot. From about 6th round on he took over - supreme athlete. The docked point seemed to affect Ricky badly, he even said as much after the fight, he got quite reckless. Still shocked to see him knocked out.

Ricky just got outclassed, same as everyone else. The Ricky from before this fight cleans house at 140, nae bother. The Ricky from after the fight I am not so sure about - I wonder if he’ll recover from this one. Hell of a way to finish an unbeaten record.

Floyd is just astounding. I don’t understand how he does things even in slow motion.

He starts a hook, and if the guy is ducking, he hits him square on the jaw. If the guy pulls back, he hits him square on teh jaw. If the guy stands still, he hits him square on the jaw.

They all call him “accurate”, but he’s like Anakin in “The Phantom Menace”. . .he truly seems to know where things are going to be before they’re there. He ducks, rolls, blocks effectively. Jabs, and hooks perfectly.

He’s the greatest fighter I’ve ever seen. . .offensively, defensively, smarts.

I thought Hatton would stand a chance because he can usually do for 12 rounds what De La Hoya was doing effectively. . .come forward and throw. But, it didn’t make a difference.

Great promotion for this fight. I enjoyed the shit out of May-Hatton 24/7. I enjoyed the fight. Great class displayed by both fighters after the fight. They glossed over it, but the first thing out of Hatton’s mouth what “that was a fluke”. He was totally kidding, of course.

I’ve never been a huge Mayweather fan, but I’ve really come around after these last couple fights. That was like watching art.
