Mayweather vs. McGregor

MMA is doing pretty well as it stands and really doesn’t need these sorts of side shows anymore.

Holm is a kick-boxer with a decent ground game and she was just beaten by a grappler.

Holm had enough grappling defense to defend several clinches, escape from the ground, and even take Rousey down. She clearly isn’t a puncher with no grappling skills. She’s had enough training to effectively defend herself. If she was a bad grappler she would have lost the fight in the first round after Holm took her odwn.

And Tate beat Holm with grappling.

Could Peyton Manning get a hit off of Roger Clemens? No one who actually understands either sport would care.

This is a nice summation of what I think happened in Holm-Rousey.

Although McGregor would be insane to think he is the better striker. He wouldn’t have any choice in a boxing match, but in MMA he would have to avoid the mistake that Rousey made.

And you are correct - this is very unlikely to come off. Mayweather doesn’t take fights where he has a chance of losing, which is why he dodged Pacquiao for so long, so he won’t fight MMA against anybody.

Fair enough, I just think 3 mins is a long time for a non boxer to be in a ring with a boxer.

Sure, against a Mike Tyson. And even against him several boxers of rather low caliber took him the distance by grabbing and holding. I’d say with Mayweather-MacGregor that Mayweather will want to punish him for a while, and then knock him out when he gets bored.

Guesstimate who the 50th best light middleweight in boxing is. That person would demolish McGregor. Hell you could probably pick a random 17 year old competitor at a regional Golden Gloves who would easily outclass him. There are probably a thousand 150 pounders that would be at least even with him. At boxing anyways.

That’s a bit of an exaggeration if he spends some time training first. He’s a good athlete, well trained in martial arts, and very fast. With a few months of training he could win against a number 20 contender. Put 4 fights under his belt in the next year and he *might *be competitive in the top 10, assuming he has a good trainer and some basic boxer’s instincts. Of course he could be the kind of guy who leads with his chin or can’t counter or something like that and he’d never get anywhere.

Probably more than a bit  But the 50th ranked super welterwight(154) according to the IBO(second tier) is a Canadian named Steven Butler, age 20. He’s been boxing since 12 and has around 70 fights, amateur and pro. Doubt he has the natural skills someone like McGregor has but that is a huge amount of experience. I would bet on him every time against McGregor.

You do have something there. Young fighters are often underrated because they don’t have victories over higher ranked guys even when it’s obvious that they have a very high skill level.
