Hey, at least Murmansk actually made sense.
Ah. I’d wondered about the coincidence with the names, but figured that inventing imaginary posters to support his position was too much even for Sevastopol. I need to stop over-estimating this guy.
Ill try a little harder
My, ‘witticism’ is such a big word to use for someone who considers this OP has any merit. Fools, blackguards and reprobates will remain so, the mission of this board notwithstanding.
ps. I susspect if you were to try and write more concisely and clearly you wouldn’t end up making statements that seem to many to be insults.
This is just weaselly hairsplitting and evasion to avoid admitting that he was a jerk. We’ve seen it a few thousand times (I’ve even engaged in it myself). It won’t mater if we stop posting to this thread, because he’ll just start another at the next trivial provocation, even if it exists solely in his own mind. Best to heap on the scorn, drive him to critical mass and enjoy the ride.
Sure, but I’m addressing the grammer. No-one will out and out say admit an error was made. You won’t claim that MEB correctly interpreted the grammer, will you?
With Lemur866 I’m addressing the dishonesty, this being the pit, I rather thought I was being too civil. My post is the blunt truth.
It’s worth pointed it thier dishonesty and yours. Parody is an effective tool for bringing out the truth in a phrase. Bippy and MEBuckner drafted their parodies, realized the reflection of my words didn’t make an effective parody and omitted/changed the crucial words to serve the end they had decided on.
A fair parody would work, to show the weakness of MEBuckner’s position. e,g
hammering things to tables
Hammers: ballpeens, sledges, and needlenose are useful for bashing things to tables with nails and thumbtacks.
My, a ballpeen is a big hammer to use for a thumbtack.
Are you that dumb that you really haven’t worked it out yet? You really need to have a quiet chat with DSeid. Sorry I tried to go easy on you, won’t make the same mistake again.
No, it’s still no good. You’re trying to hard to achieve a result rather than doing a parody to bring out the meaning of the words.
For instance: this doesn’t make any sense “‘witticism’ is such a big word to use for someone who.” Think about the “for.”
I don’t know why I’m crediting you with good faith, anyway.
The audience is curiously embarassed. - Tom Wolfe
I don’t care about grammar. I claim that MEBuckner was correct to warn you for personal insults in GD based on that post of yours. Are you arguing that the warning was not justified?
Grammar is important. It’s how you find out what a post is saying. You and MEB have said grammer be damned we’ll decided what a post says, irrespective of what it actually says. Is that a fair way to moderate?
In fact the only coherent reading of my post is the meaning I’m attributing to it, namely a criticism of John Mace’s choice of words to describe the thinking of Iraq war supporters. That’s not a personal insult and on that basis the warning was not justified. Remember the thread was all about Iraq war supporters.
I was leading on with the following sentence [Reprobates etc] to argue for support for the Iraq war stemming from poor moral character.
I’ve recalled that John Mace mentioned earlier in the thread that he wasn’t an Iraq war supporter [in fact he repeated that later in the thread]. I knew that at the time and thought to argue with his view of how people come to support it.
And while we are talking about classy, I’ve just noticed a post by a moderator was deleted in this thread where he skirted pretty close to the rule about quoting people accurately.
So there’s some conscience at work back there.
Ah, so your argument is “but I’m not touching you!” (spoken while holding your finger a millimeter away from your sister’s face).
Any normal person reading your original post will read it as an insult directed at John Mace. Even if you can later prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that you didn’t intend it as such, the effect is the same. The burden is on you not to say things that most people will read as insults, not on us to research your history with John Mace and decide what your likely intent was.
Captain Amazing in the thread read it properly as an attack on the morals of Iraq war supporters generally [including as it later turned out himself]. I’ve posted the link earlier in this thread.
The post wasn’t a tricky way of insulting John Mace who by and large I respect as a poster. And I think if I use the English language properly, which is the language of this board, them I’m at least entitled to the benefit of the doubt when an ambiguity later comes up. By contrast I had an earlier warning for slightly insulting someone in GD. Slight, but fair enough I thought, won’t do that again.
So it’s not like I’m a serial complainer, but in this case, I just think you’ve got it wrong.
And no, that isn’t my argument. JM threw himself in my line of fire, after the fact, then cried “missed” in a later post.
I have two younger sisters. That was the greatest game I’ve ever played!
I love watching records in the making. The length of rope SeveredStool will end up hanging himself with will be one for the ages. Wings and beer at my house for anyone that wants to make a party of it.
Well, we’ve just set the benchmark of dishonesty. Let me raise the bar and say I respect your opinions.
You’re getting your ass handed to you here and try to make nice with that bullshit? Weak, dude. Weak.
Who, exactly, am I lying to when I point out the clear meaning of your post? You? Am I trying to fool you into thinking you wrote something you hadn’t? It’s a tempting strategy, I admit: I can almost believe you’re stupid enough to fall for it. Am I lying to other readers? Readers who can easily go to the thread and read your post, in it’s proper context, and decide on their own? That would be a pretty futile lie, and by this point, surely someone would have gone, looked, and come back to defend you. And yet, there’s a curious silence when it comes to people agreeing with you in this thread. How do you explain that? How does it happen that every single person who can be arsed to post to this thread can clearly see an insult in what you wrote? Conspiracy?
That’s a pretty big “if”.
“Grammer”?

Yet for is precisely the word you used in your first quote
My, calculus is such a big word to use for an Iraq war supporter. Fools, blackguards and reprobates will remain so, the mission of this board notwithstanding.
I am not trying to prove a point about what you said, but how it was said in such a manner that could easily lead someone to believe your intent was to insult John Mace. I am crediting you with the inteligence to know that the clarity of your writing is important in avoiding misscomunication. You know how to use the language, probably better than I, but your ability to communicate effectively using that language skill needs to be worked on if you wish to avoid giving missleading ompressions of your true intended meaning.
