Well, that’s annoying. I’ll try to keep better track of this thread from now on, so I’ll know if a save file should be showing up in my inbox.
It’s all good. It’s good that we bonked into some kinks early so it can be addressed. I think having a rule to privately message the person and/or email them should be going without saying.
So I need to make sure that I get the HRE and the Moops unlocked, right?
You could ghetto unlock them in the descr_strat file.
Yeah, but… but… I don’t wanna! I won’t hold you guys up, though- if it comes to my turn, I’ll “ghetto unlock”. Well, back to slogging through France. Longbowmen sure are entertaining. If only I had pikes!
You don’t need to unlock them in order to play the save file. I didn’t have the Danes unlocked last time*, and I could play them just fine. All unlocking does is makes them show up on the “New Campaign” page.
- Oddly enough, theyre still locked. You unlock a faction by beating it, not by playing it.
Then I’ll let the men rest, at least a little. Jerusalem can wait for the opportune moment, not a hasty dash.
The Sultan is dead - again. This time around he decided to bring his son in from Algiers toward the Spanish peninsula, since he felt the cold touch of death approaching and the people have been calling for the reconquest of Valencia.
But the new Sultan has more of a mind for the trade of exotic Timbuktu, and is racing there as fast as possible, hoping to buy some infantry mercs along the way to conquer it with.
Sent the file to LOUNE. new order for Moors is:

The Sultan is dead! Oh yeah,** RandMcNally**…you might wonder how and why you’ve got some unruly settlements spanning the globe. I bludgeon people over the head with diplomacy and I get a LOT from the unwitting folk. Case in point: Venice (we’re at war with them again). Yes, again. I talked to them and got Durazzo from them. They invaded me and shoved my back out. I happened to have a diplomat by Venice as well, so I asked for a ceasefire, which they LOVED. I tried to make them a vassal, but they despised it. So I took the ceasefire, Durazzo, and Zagreb in the talks. You may have to consolidate Damascus and Acre into one settlement and retool to reexpand. I was working towards that. There are ships headed to Tripoli to pick up generals and troops, then head back to Acre and kick some ass and take as much land as possible before the Mongols get there. If we do it right, this game can be ended pretty quickly, I think.
The king is dead. Long live the new king!
The Cambridge History of the Moorish Empire
Mcnally, Rand. Nellis Publishing, Las Vegas. 2007. 117-118
The years 1184-1208 AD would seem, to those not familiar with the Moorish Empire history, ripe with chaos and turbulence, but to the Moorish Empire they were years of relative peace and quiet.
Sultan Qasim inherited the throne in 1184. Along with the concubines and the palace Sultan Qasim inherited a fragmented country with rebellious provinces out the outskirts and a war with a determined enemy. His predecessor cemented numerous alliances, but an alliance is only worth the sheet of paper it is written on.
Not being one for command, Sultan Qasim spent most of him time organizing building projects across the empire. Whether his focus on architecture and not the military was a boon or bust for his country is a fact which is still debated to this day.
In the year AD 1190 the army garrison in Damascus was overrun by rebels while Sultan Qasim was in transit to Acre with a fresh army. But by the time he was able to land his troops the Egyptians. Not wanting a war with Egypt at that moment (Venice captured Durazzo in 1194, he could not handle another front) the Sultan then attacked the rebel stronghold Aleppo in 1206, with only 62 dead and 319 of the enemy slain. It would be the only victory which would be credited to his name.

The defense of Magdenburg in 1198 by 3 units of Moorish mercenary crossbowmen, totalling only 178, shocked even the castle’s populace.
After having been at peace with the Holy Roman Empire, Magdenburg was lightly garrisoned, despite it being in the center of Eastern Europe, not within a hundred miles of the nearest friendly forces.
After a brief siege the Germanic forces attacked with around 350 men from various units such as town militia, crossbowmen and was personally lead by one of the Holy Roman Emperor’s favorite generals.
Meant only to fight to induce as much casualties to the enemy, the Moors stood their ground, ready to die. But by the end of the day 48 of those men still lived while only 44 of the enemy were lucky enough to run away. The German Emperor’s favorite general was not one of the ones to retreat. He was slain on the town’s square, with the rest of his men.
Oof. The Holy Roman Empire got in on that action? Expansion is very bright in the Middle East, that’s for sure. Of course, Mongols are over the horizon.
(Good defense of Magdeburg. I was going to have that as a staging point for cleaning up andy rebel forced in Europe, but building ate the shit out of my budget.)
I built a Garrison Quarters there so at least next time they decide to attack the defense won’t be so close. Without those spearmen though, I don’t think the castle can last much longer.
Poke poke, nudge nudge
How you doin’, LOUNE?
I’m great! Thanks for asking! More importantly, how are you doing? Rand, did my misshapen empire prove too much to keep going?
So…um…anyone doing this anymore? Perhaps we should different brackets now. One faction gets 4 or 5 people working on it with 2 or 3 factions going at the same time.
All in favor of restarting our restarting?
Definitely in favour. Perhaps a new thread, even? And a new country? I leave it up to your discretion. Me, I’m still up for some action.
I’m in.
I’m still in, still wondering what’s goin’ on.
Perhaps we should set a time limit of a couple days to a week where you’d have to provide an update or it would be assumed you are out of it and the file would then be sent along to the next person (and if the time limit is a week, you’d best have a good excuse if you haven’t started the turn yet!)
Oh, I forgot to mention but I sent the file to the next person right before I made my update post.
