Meet the Family Flock

Finally got a good picture of the family flock, so I thought I’d share it with ya’ll. Here are the family birds:

The green on is Griffin, a green-checked conure. The yellow head is Sunny (originally Sunshine), and the white head hiding in the Tab box is Sydney, both of whom are cockatiels. Sydney is a little high-strung and nervous, so we need to keep a hidey-hole around for him.

Great looking guys.

If you are interested in other people’s birds I would recommend a blog. She has some interesting info and pictures.

ETA you can search her blog on the tag “birds” if you don’t want to read about knitting or other things.

Adorable, this is part of my flock

What cuties! How are their personalities?

Sydney is a nervous bird, always has been. He actually likes people better than other birds and probably would have been happiest as an only bird. He’s kind of weird for cockatiel - we joke he’s got the bird equivalent of Asperger’s. Extremely cautious, and is the only bird we’ve ever owned that doesn’t like to ride in the car. To some extent, he’d be happy to live his entire life in the bedroom (that’s where the picture was taken). He was two years old before we could carry him into another room without protest, and he was three before he’d go into the kitchen on his own - keep in mind, that’s where the food is and they know it. Any other bird, if he’s missing we look in the kitchen first… except Sydney. Sydney also tends to freak out if the other cockatiel leaves the room without him.

Sunny is not quite as smart as Sydney, but he’s more normal. Explores everywhere, whether he should or not, and occasionally has to be rescued from behind a dresser (actually, a couple years ago he figured out how to get out from behind them himself, he just likes people to come get him). When he’s being naughty he announces it by screaming - then seems to wonder why we always catch him in the act. Last winter Sunny got out of the apartment and screamed until I located him almost buried in a snowdrift. Definitely our current escape artist, not as attached to people, but more assertive in regards to begging for handouts at meal times.

Griffin is Top Bird right now. VERY much a people bird, and tends to “claim” a favorite human (me, for the last few months, but prior to that the spouse). Can be very protective of both the other birds in the household and the humans in the household. More inclined to bite than the other birds, especially if provoked, but 90% of the time is a real sweetie. Always wants to be where the action is - watching me wash dishes, sort laundry, watches TV with the spouse, watches if you play computer games. Given his choice, he’d been on my shoulder 24/7. I occasionally have to lock him up so I can get things done - his “assistance” isn’t always helpful.

Griffin dictates wake up times for the flock, and will chase the other birds out of their cages if he thinks they’re sleeping in too late. He’ll also wake up napping humans. Sunny determines bedtime. Sydney complains about both of them either getting him up or insisting he retire.

Griffin is definitely the more dominant/aggressive bird. Sunny is mostly bluff. Sydney usually retreats but when he does stand his ground he’ll go eye-to-eye with Griffin despite being lighter and weaker, and even winds sometimes on sheer determination… but usually he’ll hide rather than argue or fight.

Nice pictures! I have 2 Quaker Parrots, Sami http://tinypic.com/r/5zo806/7

Neat birds. I admit I don’t know much about birds and have considered working for an exotics vet in order to learn, but they intimidate me a little. I suppose others may say the same about the feral cats I work with!

I have one friend whose home I don’t go to much, she has 9 rescued birds. They’re too much for me, and spooky smart. One of them seems to know when a scary movie’s scary part is coming and will start yelling just before the movie does the “gotcha” part. Scared the bejeezus out of me, she did!

I love the “is it safe yet?” shot of the one in the box.

Great birds all, but Tab Broomstick? I thought that died in the 90’s.

Very cute! I have a whiteface, Nikita. He’s a spoiled little guy, not very used to people (I need to throw more parties!) but he’ll show off for a crowd if he’s in the mood. He’s fully flighted and has run of the place 24/7.
He’s the only tiel I’ve ever seen who uses his feet to hold a cornflake treat or gnaw on his chew toy, like larger parrots do.
