The hubby and I are going to be meeting my mom in Madison for dinner tomorrow night. The problem is that none of us really know the city. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there maybe a pedestrian area that would be nice to walk through in the evening, or a place to eat that’s fun or unique?
Ack, sorry, I should have specified Madison, Wisconsin!
State street just east of the UW is a lovely promenade lined with many fine exotic & traditional american style restaurants: Afghani, Japanese, Mexican, to name the barest few. And from there, it’s just a short stroll to the shores of Lake Mendota at UW.
Dotty’s Dumpling Dowry. SIGH
Ah, Qadgop! Thanks for the reply! State Street sounds nice. Is it hard to get there from, say I-90? Just follow the signs to UW Madison, I imagine.
Yup, State Street is pretty easy to find. For easy access from I-90, I’d suggest taking the 151 exit (Washington Avenue) into town. It will take you straight to the Capitol. Find a parking ramp nearby. State Street runs directly west from the western corner of the Capitol square (90 + 45 degrees counterclockwise from you as you’re on Washington facing the Capitol). Make sure to walk all the way down to the University Bookstore before you choose your venue; some of the best restaurants of State Street (in my humble O) are on that far end.
Have fun! Mr. S and I will be in Madison tomorrow also, picking up our moped from the shop. We’ll probably hit the Indian buffet on Odana Road (India Garden?) for lunch. Yummm.
No need. There is only one true Madison. All other cities and towns with the same name are strictly amateurs.
L’etoile for a dinner about $35 a head
Tornado Room for steak, a little less
Lazy Jane’s on Williamson St for cheap, good, tasty food.
My favorite is Mediterranean cafe, but I don’t know if they’re open for dinner or not. I go for lunch. They probably are.
So where’d you go?
By the time we got around to looking for lunch, it was midafternoon and we didn’t know if the Indian buffets would be serving. So we went to Brocach on the square; Mr. S had his favorite fish and chips (with a Guinness, of course) and I had the shepherd’s pie, yum. Then we cruised State Street, of course.
