I think it’s a pretty layered satire, and I don’t even like Family Guy. First, it’s a satire of the perverse nature of humanity: there’s absolutely nothing wrong with Meg, but somewhere along the line the family decided she was ugly/pitiful, and they all (including Meg) believe it. It’s also a satire (through exaggeration) of how cruel families can be. Finally, it’s a satire of how over-dramatic and sensitive and high strung teenage girls can be: the family acts towards Meg the way a lot of teenage girls think their families treat them.
And for those of you who don’t know, Meg looks like this in real life.
at times… but when the series started out he was an evil genius with world domination aspirations. then he turned ambiguously gay with flashes of megalomania, smart beyond his years, mature beyond his years, and reverting back to a 2 year old interspersed to make a funny.
What do you think was the worst act of cruelty toward Meg? I felt the most awful for her when they left her to be blow-darted by the islanders who hated freshmen. That was until I saw her and Lois having a tender isn’t-that-special moment and Meg says, “I love you, Mom” and Lois answers, “I la lu too.”
Y tu, Lois?
If you need me I’ll be in holodeck number 3.
I thought the joke was that every show has a character where the fans say “I hate X! Every time they have a story that revolves around X, I want to shoot my TV!”
So they just picked a character and said “Okay, this is the designated character you’re supposed to hate.”
She got fired from a lot of NYC radio stations (WPIX, WLIR) so somebody must have hated her talking all the time how great the Rolling Stones are.
That’s also how I see it.
I think that’s giving too much credit to the FG writing staff
Like everything else on “Family Guy,” Meg’s a one-joke character that gets trotted out for the same joke over and over again because the writers are fucking terrible. In her case, the joke is that this otherwise dull and uninteresting teenage girl is loathed by the entire universe. Pretty funny the first time, less funny the second, tiresome by the third, then oddly funny again the fourth, and then just boring and obvious the fifth through six thousandth. Just like everything else on the show.
Gross!
I don’t understand how she got this job. Was Kunis just wondering around 20th Century Fox and someone said, “You want to audition for the voiceover gig?”.
I doubt that it is that much money, but the residuals when they go into syndication must add up.
I did a little Googling and it sounds like she doesn’t even have to do into a studio to record her parts.
As someone who has seen every episode I can say there is really no reason for it, it’s just a running gag that the parents hate Meg. Lois can’t remember her birthday or say “I love you” to her. Peter is amazingly cruel to her. Chris and Brian aren’t so bad to her usually. The non-family members seem indifferent to her.
On the subject of characters not liking each other, I liked the revelation that Quagmire hates Brian.
She was already on “That 70’s Show.” I’m not clear on what you don’t understand. Was she too famous, or not famous enough?
That was actually quite an interesting moment, just a massive unloading with criticisms of Brian that were actually pretty valid. A few minor jokes in the rant, but overall just the kind of hostile monologue I’d like to give several people who’ve irritated me.
It is just that I’m not aware that she had previous voice experience, so I don’t know
why she would get a casting call. Did Seth Macfarlane know her? Did someone hear her and and decide she sounded like Meg should sound? IMDB says she was born in 1983, so she would have been about 16 when the Family Guy started. You think they would be looking someone more experienced.
If you think that’s gross, Meg looked like this in season 1.
I personally loved her in the Superfriends.
*
Superman!
… Wonder Woman!
… Aquaman!
… Batman and Robin!
… … … and Meg.
*
Mila Kunis frequently does voiceovers on Robot Chicken…she hangs out with all the young hot animators apparently…
And I’ll be in Holodeck 4…
