Why does everyone hate her? I mean, a lot of the characters on Family Guy are a lot more annoying than her and do A LOT worse things. Why all the Meg hate?
I’ll be the first say, I like Meg. 
People hate Meg? I’ve never really heard of REAL people hating Meg. Maybe hating her characterization and the fact that the writers made her into a butt monkey and the fact that any plot involving her is going to necessarily devolve into demeaning jokes and generally be rather boring. I don’t hate Meg, I mostly just hate the way she’s either blithely ignored, or hated (in-show) waaaaay beyond credibility, or used as an author’s excuse to show off why a particular viewpoint is wrong (i.e. if they need someone to have a bad or loony trait, half the time they give it to Meg nowadays).
I don’t hate Meg. I think it is funny how she has become the punching bag now. Yes beyond credibility, but Family Guy isn’t supposed to be credible
I agree. However, sometimes they go against their own reason. Like how come Lois Griffin is hot? Yet, Meg looks like her and is ugly? 
(To be honest, they’re both drawn rather poorly.)
Family Guy goes against their own reasoning all the time. Whatever they need to make a joke
It makes it less funny when someone is a designated punching bag. A lot of humor derives from subversion of expectations. When you see Meg you just KNOW what’s about to go down, you don’t know HOW exactly, but you know it just WILL. The expectation kills the humor a bit, imo. The only funny joke I can recall in recent memory regarding Meg was in the dimension travel episode, where she was super hot and was still “one of the ugly ones.” Though the funny there had more to do with the “if you saw Lois…” punchline.
I thought this was gonna be about the DJ who used to be on WNEW, and K-Rock. I didn’t think anyone particularly hated her, either.
She’s the only one in the Griffin family who *isn’t *a total loser. That’s why the rest of them hate her. It’s sort of like in The Munsters, the only normal looking member of the family (Marilyn, I think?) got everyone’s sympathy because they thought there was something wrong with her.
Because everyone also hates Lisa Simpson - the female middle child of the other animated family on TV.
Meg is the oldest child though
Lisa Simpson actually does things to be hated. She’s a whiny know it all. I can’t help but think of the time Ned made a football time and she comes prancing around asking to join and is dejected when Sheri and Teri are already on the team. Someone like that desires the football shoved down her throat.
I always just assumed that Meg was a parody of the typical angsty (whiney) teenager - “You all hate me! The WHOLE WORLD is AGAINST ME!!” And in Meg’s case, she’s right.
That said, I must admit that I’d probably watch “Family Guy” more often if not for the relentless Meg bashing. I feel bad for her.
Yea, this was my take as well. Teenage girls in particular seem to often go through a phase where they alternate between paranoia and over-the-top self loathing. The joke with Meg is that in her case, its true.
I think its funny.
I always thought the Meg-baiting on the show was a spoof on all the teasing of Carol on Growing Pains, and shows like that. I’m not sure why I think that; it’s just what it reminded me of the first time I saw it.
Then again, the actress who played Carol eventually developed an eating disorder, so I dunno if even Seth MacFarlane would go there.
Oh, hell, who am I kidding? He’d totally go there.
I believe Meg is supposed to look more like this. I make no claims that she should be mocked for it or whatever, just that she’s not supposed to be Lois-hot.
Lois has a triangle for a nose. That’s hot? 
The “real” Meg looks like a fat Anna Paquinn.

Actually, the worst part is that the writers admitted they started the new “Meg sucks” characterizaiton because they were too stupid to create a believeable teenage girl.
Meg’s unpopular for the same reason that Stewie’s psychotic, Brian’s an alcoholic, and Chris is stupid - it’s a hook for the writers to use for jokes.
Not really, Stewie isn’t psychotic, he sees reality as best as a two year-old can.
Brian is a bit of an alcoholic, but his preference for bimbos and his high-and-mighty progressiveness is a bit more of a hook. Chris isn’t stupid so much as he’s slow on the uptake.
Now, if only there was a Permanently-drunk, Extremely stupid man , who Totally Evades Reality on the show.
