Megan 2.0 (sequel)

I finally saw Megan 2.0 last night and, unlike many other sequels, it was significantly better than the original. The original was essentially the hackneyed “child’s toy turns evil” theme and looks like a low budget movie compared to Megan 2.0, which has a more complex and meaningful theme to it.

Some people seemed to go the other way on that, and the idea that Megan was not the bad guy/girl.

I did keep thinking she sounded a lot like GLADOS if you know who that is…

I’m not sure I would use the terms complex and meaningful to describe the sequel, personally. It was a fun movie with more action than the original, but it was less creepy.

It’s kind of like Terminator vs. Terminator 2.

“More meaningful” to me because it delved into the whole AI issue and broached the question of whether or not an intelligent and self-aware being could or could not develop a conscience. We satisfy those criteria, and we have one.

Man, I have a different read on 1.0. A running theme in the movie is what happens when you subordinate your responsibilities to AI, as well as how successfully imitative AI is. As she adapts over time, M3gan becomes a better parent than Gemma, and as a result Cady changes to the point where she’s willing to be violent when the therapist wants to separate them.

I was going to list out a bunch of imitative examples, but I found a Reddit post that does it way better than I would.

It’s all timely stuff, even a bit predictive of where we’re going with LLMs and our growing dependence on individualized technology.

True, and how embarrassing is that?! LOL
Speaking of Gemma, I disliked her. She is a bossy know-it-all and, in 2.0, she screwed the pooch so bad that it was almost the ultimate disaster.
