Took me a while to look it up, but a moderator actually ruled on this changing of someone’s user name - see quote below from the thread about someone changing ‘liberal’s’ user name. Aldebaran has said that he doesn’t want to be called this name - and it is clearly stated below that “It isn’t acceptable to drag insulting nicknames for other posters all over the boards.” … It is insulting to call Aldebaran by a girl’s name, and serves no purpose other than to "re-ignite old battles " IMHO.
OH come on, you know Aldebaran’s style. A thousand cries of oppression, haughty words of dismissal and a stoic resolve to leave this childish place behind.
He was back in 3 days going on about his abortive attempt at “SDMB-suicide”. The drama never ends. In short he’s thriving on the attention.

Ah, but there’s a difference between standing your ground on the country-of-origin-aspersions point – where Mehitabel is making a worthwhile argument – and behaving childishly – “Neener neener, Debbie is a poopyhead!” – which is what Mehitabel is doing. I can respect the first but find the second contemptible. Especially given the self-deprecating humor in Aldebaran’s last post in this thread.
I don’t give a rat’s ass how old chronologically Mehitabel may be; her behavior on this user name issue is infantile.
So her offense is she called him a name? After what he said about her? I’m sorry but I just don’t get it. Who has committed the greater offense here?
Go back and read my last post. Consider the distinction I make between the argument on the merits and the level of maturity being displayed. I don’t mind invective, in fact it’s often entertaiing, but for Og’s sake, can’t it at least be creative, rather than the kind of thing a five-year-old thinks is the height of wit? I believe Aldebaran was overreacting in his accusations against Mehitabel, but her responses in this thread, including her latest snarky reference to “The fat lady of mysterious nationality”, would appear to make a case for his point, wouldn’t it?
Then too, to deliberately twist a username into a derogatory form is, as has already been pointed out, jerkish behavior and at the very least frowned upon by The Powers That Be. I recall previous Dopers being warned by the mods not to do it. At the very least, it makes the name-twister look like a petulant baby.
