There’s a simple solution to this problem is New Yorkers don’t want to bear this cost. Stop using their police resources to provide baby-sitting services for a couple of private citizens.
All of which, plus the tremendous expense involved, would seem to make this decision not exactly a “non-issue”.
The public may not be able to help paying for it, but that doesn’t mean the public doesn’t get to complain about being screwed over so hard for the personal convenience of somebody who’s supposed to be our #1 public servant, not our tyrannical boss. (The portion of the public that’s been howling for eight years about unconscionable taxpayer expense every time the Obamas take a vacation are especially invited to contemplate this prospect.)
For what it is worth, Trump is a horrible person and I think he is deplorable. I am deeply ashamed of my society for electing him.

I’m willing to bet Melania and Barron never see the inside of the White House whether Trump lasts the whole 4 years or not. Does anyone really think he treats his family any different than he treats everyone else? That he has a loving father son relationship with Barron or that Barron, who has an entire floor of the Trump Towers to himself is a normal 10 year old? To be fair, although I prefer just to leave politicians’ minor children entirely out of discussions about the politicians (and also I am not salinqmind and cannot speak for him/her), it seemed pretty plain to me that salinqmind was mocking not Barron himself but rather the shallow, self-centered and self-aggrandizing way that Trump seems to assess his children.
Kids, wives, friends, they all have to be braggably “hot” or “rich” or “the best” or whatever. A kid who even appeared to be developmentally disabled would be a YUGE embarrassment for the self-absorbed, image-obsessed, and empathy-poor Trump.
Her tone was venomous and she used a mocking name “Widdle Twump” to refer to a 10 year old child. We don’t know if Barron has special needs but she spoke about it as fact and that the possibility is something to be ashamed of. And she mocked the necessity to not “disrupt his routine” if he does have some sort of special need. That behavior is revolting to me no matter whose child is being discussed.

Plus even if protecting Trump Tower cost $1bn/year, that’s just not that much money. Do you have any idea how much it costs to operate the President’s fleet of helicopters (the Marine One helicopters)? Or Air Force One? We’re spending tons of money on this stuff. $1bn/yr isn’t that much money for the government.
That being said, while the Secret Service/Federal government never pay local law enforcement back for their services in Presidential visits (at least that I can tell, and I found a quote from the Secret Service to that effect), there’s also no legal requirement that New York City provide Trump with even one cent of protection. They’re doing it as a courtesy, out of respect to the office of the President. If they made the determination they couldn’t afford to, or did not desire, to use resources in this way, then the Secret Service would have to pull in more Federal resources to get the job done.
It might be kind of funny to see a NYPD cruiser try to pull over the presidential motorcade for running red lights.
Yes. It costs about a quarter-million dollars per hour to operate Air Force One, or a million dollars every four hours. To get to a billion dollars annually for Air Force One, it would have to fly a thousand four-hour trips per year, or over ten hours of flight time every day.

One billion dollars a year is actually a lot of money for Presidential transportation. If Trump is planning to cost the taxpayers an extra billion dollars or so annually just to cater to his Golden Emperor whim of sleeping in his Manhattan home instead of in the official residence that he sought so determinedly to be allowed to occupy, that doesn’t seem to me like a shrug and a who-cares.
Certainly none of the people who whined about the cost of Obama’s vacations have any business shrugging off the huge expenses of Trump’s proposed commuter lifestyle.

I don’t blame her for wanting to live separately from Der Obergropenfuhrer. Given that a yahoo uses a one-man gyrocopter to violate the DC airspace in 2015 and landed on the Capitol lawn I question just how useful that airspace ban actually is. It’s 90% security theater at best. If someone was really intent on harm via aircraft there’s damn little that can be done once the bird is in the air.
The no-fly zone that follows the PotUS is just as annoying and disruptive as the Presidential motorcade screwing up ground traffic.
And, just want to point out that airplanes CAN fly around DC and do so routinely - if they couldn’t Reagan National would have been shut down in the early 00’s.
Trump Tower is a target because it’s a big, tall building in the middle of a busy city and no one is willing to secure it by moving everyone but Trump out of arbitrary number of blocks around the place and shutting down airspace around the nation’s largest city completely. Maybe we should just get a grip on the notion that we can’t make anyone or anything 100% safe and settle for a reasonable trade-off.

To begin with, the First Lady doesn’t have any official duties whatsoever. None. Although traditional for her to take on various causes and act as hostess she is in no way obligated to do so. Recent First Ladies have been women with careers of their own outside the home but Melania, although having had a career prior to marrying Trump, has been a stay-at-home mother with Barron and arguably “trophy wife” and there is no reason she can’t continue as such.
Also, she HAS stated her cause being the issue of cyberbullying, especially of children - but why would she need to worry about that, it’s not like anyone has implied her son is abnormal or “special needs” on line, right? :rolleyes:
As far as being qualified… she speaks six languages and had a career as a model, if you’re talking about hostess duties at something like a state dinner where basically she has to look pretty and engage in small talk I’d think she is very qualified.
I don’t know if she’d be willing to visit “AIDS victims, war casualties, veterans hospitals, anything icky” - Princess Diana came out of a much more privileged background than Melanija Knavs, was a literal princess who only had to look pretty at public appearances and raise an heir to the throne yet became rather well known for that sort of thing. I don’t assume that because she’s married to Trump she’s a vapid, empty-headed thing that needs bubble wrap around her. Prior to meeting Trump she was supporting herself and had traveled extensively in Europe and North America as an ordinary person of modest means, she’s not some clueless idiot raised from birth to be an ornament. I have no idea of what she is or isn’t capable of doing or how she really feels about becoming FLotUS - and neither do you. I find Donald Trump to be repulsive but I know little to nothing about her wife and have no opinion either way.
