I doubt there’s any more complex motive behind this than doing it to see what the reaction is. At this stage she’s no more than an attractive monkey being goaded by her keepers to fling poo from her gilded cage.
I can’t think of any explanation that makes a lick of sense. No way is the message meant to be taken literally, yet I can’t figure out what it supposedly *is *trying to say. No way would anyone do something so blatantly hateful. Even if she really felt that way (and I don’t believe she does) she’s not * that * obtuse. Supposing for a moment that it is a message or a prank on the media, it’s a complete fail because nobody gets it. You want to tell me no one on the team could anticipate the backlash? Or come up with something that makes sense?
Unfortunately we’ll probably never know the truth, since truth is not in this administrations’ wheelhouse.

I am of the opinion that Melania pretty much hates her husband at this point. And if he lost his second election, she would be thrilled.
So yeah, I think this incident was a passive aggressive dig at her husband.
I don’t know what it means, but I suspect it’s not a troll of the media. That’s too weird. And she didn’t wear it at the camps–she wore it getting on the plane and getting off. I think it’s a message to her husband.

However you feel about prostitution, the accusation of prostitution has been used since the dawn of history to dehumanize women and justify the worst atrocities against them. Labeling someone a “whore” is labeling them as a thing, as a creature outside the protection of law. “Whore” is the word men use when they beat their wives to death, it’s not a word any decent person should use to insult a woman.
Fair enough. A marriage for money is a business transaction between consenting adults with full knowledge of each other’s motivations. Neither is more a whore than the other.
You misunderstand me. “Whore” does not mean “a person who has sex for money”. “Whore” means “a person of such utter moral bankruptcy that they are no longer a member of society. They are permitted to linger on the fringes, but they lack basic humanity, and no decent person would have any sort of empathy for them. When they are the victim of crimes, they have no right to justice; acts of violence against them carry the moral weight of acts of violence against animals or objects.”
For most of human history, it was understood that whores traded sex for money because that’s the only option they had, not that trading sex for money made you a whore. Or rather, the two states were seen as the inevitable result of a flawed, subhuman nature. Screaming “whore” as you beat or rape a woman is about justifying the action; it’s okay to treat whores like that because they aren’t really people.
We are still very close in human history to an era in which women had to guard their sexual purity because it was their only argument that they were entitled to protection or security. We are still way too close to start using the word “whore” casually.
I don’t think she likes getting dragged into such messes and asked about where she stands. Puts her in an awkward position, I suspect. Be FLOTUS like and pretend to care? Appearing as a contrast to her husband? Be attacked for lack of compassion if she doesn’t? That’s a lot of work!
It’s her message to the media to stop asking her, she doesn’t care.

I think this explanation has much to recommend it - but the other possibility I quite like is that she deliberately fucks these things up in the worst way to prevent people giving her more first-lady-jobs to do.

I actually have a lot of sympathy for her at this point. Even if she married him entirely for his money, this wasn’t what she signed up for: the worst case scenario is that he’d get bored with her an divorce her. She could also presumably leave if she wanted, or live a separate life. Now, she can’t leave. He needs her around and compliant for political purposes. He’s capable, I’m sure, of threatening her son, or of separating her from her son, and those are credible threats. I don’t think she has any influence on him–he has all the leverage. She’s incredibly isolated, while at the same time, in perpetual view. Does she have anyone she can talk to? Anyone she can trust? She’s utterly trapped and alone.
Gotta be one hell of a prenup.

We aren’t talking about poor immigrants here. This is a woman who last I checked is worth $20 million on her own.
That’s like saying a “faggot” is just a guy that likes to have sex with men and that it’s okay to call so-and-so a faggot because he’s had sex with men. “Whore” is a slur. It’s a slur used for centuries to justify rape and violence.
ETA: And honestly, the way you are using it here sounds like you would be okay with rape or violence against Melania Trump because you do see her as subhuman, as beneath contempt. If you don’t think that, don’t use a word that implies that in a context that suggests you’re sympathetic to the idea.

She has *many *opportunities available to her in the professional celebrity industry, if she chooses to pursue them, and can still continue to take care of a son who may require extra care. She *may *just be waiting for her parents to get full citizenship before The Donald can order a stop to it, before taking the step. Or maybe the prenup is in the way somehow.
If the most powerful man on earth, who also happened to have a vast personal fortune, threatened to destroy you–to kill you, your kid, your family–would you be confident that he was bluffing or incapable? Confident enough to risk the lives of the ones you love?
