Here’s the deal. I have noting but contempt for Milo Yiannopoulos. I think he’s scum. His dedication to spreading misery and scorn baffles and disgusts me. But I’m never going to call him a faggot. I’m never going to use that word to express my scorn. Not because he deserves better, but because that was the word the people who killed Mathew Shepherd and thousands like him used to justify what they did. Not just as a weapon to hurt, but as a reason it was okay to do what they did. It’s not okay to kill people. It’s okay to stomp faggots, because they aren’t people.
“Whore” is the same. It’s a word used to justify assault, rape, and murder, and has been for centuries. Debating whether or not someone fits the “technical definition” of a whore is implicitly embracing the underlying connotation of the word: that there are women who aren’t really human and that violence against them is acceptable. THAT’S what a whore is.
If someone wants to call themselves a whore (or a faggot), or uses the words in a jocular sense, I don’t really care. But when you use them to express anger and contempt, you are siding with a long tradition of dehumanization that has directly justified horrific violence. I don’t see how any amount of political activism could somehow justify that.

We all make decisions that have consequences. Some of them are hard, some make us face repercussions for years to come, or an entire lifetime.
Sometimes we are surprised about those consequences, sometimes we know about them in advance - and we still choose to bear them because the choice is important enough for us.
