Memphis Beat

Anyone watching this? I didn’t see another thread.

First time I’m seeing it. I really like the hero Dwight- he has great manners, and I’m a sucker for that.

And Alfre Woodard is LUSCIOUS.

Seems like a good ensemble.
ETA: Omigod. Dwight sings.

Great soundtrack on this show.

I watched it somewhat the first season. I liked it. I thought it had been canceled though because I never noticed it being advertised. Though it’s possible I just wasn’t watching enough TV on that channel.

Yeah, I agree. I watched it last season, and Jason Lee seems to have carried over the charm that infused Earl Hickey. He’s very likable.

I enjoyed the first season and I think the season 2 premiere was strong.
The plot was fairly predictable and the girl who played the IA agent couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag… but the main cast is very appealing and they seem to have gelled into a nice comfortable ensemble. I’ll keep watching.

I watched bits of it the first season, but for me it wasn’t strong enough to note when it was on. I’ll watch it if I catch it on though.

I just read that it’s getting retooled for the second season. I haven’t seen it yet, my usual MO is to watch the shows on Netflix when they’re available, but I’m a big fan of Jason Lee. It’s nice to see Earl Hickey’s mustache is gone as well…

I tried watching when it first started, but it was so obviously not Memphis it was distracting.

One episode in, whatever retooling occurred is not apparent to me.

If nothing else, it looks like they got rid of Sgt. Lightfoot. He didn’t really add much to the show, so I’m not really heartbroken. Heck, I probably would have gotten rid of Greenback, too; I thought they already had, given the way he kind of disappeared down the stretch last season.

The key will be to make sure that Hendricks’ “keeper of Memphis” attitude gets toned down considerably. Sometimes he acted like there was absolutely no one else in the city who cared about it, and it was annoying as hell. Upping the eye candy quotient would be welcome, too. I had hopes they’d bring back the cute lawyer, but if they want to have the new IA woman around (which won’t be too hard, since Beau Garrett no longer has Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior on her plate anymore), I would be agreeable to that.

I’m still really liking this show. The crime plots aren’t the focus (as they were in all 3 Law and Order’s), and what I like is the pace, the atmosphere, and the cast ensemble. The music is good and supports the mood of the setting.

I like the relationships among the characters. There’s a regard and gentleness and reminds me a little (hang on) of the Andy Griffith Show. They can be kind to each other. I like that the character Sutton, who is kind of gangly and awkward, is also quite competent and gentle and is not played for laughs. I never watched My Name Is Earl, so I didn’t have any impressions to overcome with Dwight. He seems pretty Andy-Taylor-ish-- slow-talking, kind, unflappable, and devoted to his mother. Charlie and Tanya have a little tension between them, but it’s not bitter. The police have techie know-how and use it well to catch the bad guys.

I can’t get enough of looking at Alfre Woodard (Tanya) and her CLOTHES-- they are clothes like real women wear: blouses, sweaters, soft, feminine, ruffled, and what color combinations! Mustard and turquoise, pink and baby blue-- you could buy this stuff in any department store, even the dress shop in Podunk, USA (which is where I live).

You get a little background on the characters, but not tooo much. Anyhow, I look forward to this program every week.

Good line from last night:
Outsider in the station: “Is there somewhere I can get online in here?”
Charlie: “Yeah, we steal our wi-fi from the bail bondsman next door.”
