Over the last few years, and especially here in Santa Barbara, I’ve noticed an explosion in the popularity of girls’ platform sandals. It would not be an exaggeration to say that 95% of the females here will be wearing them on any given day. I’ve got no idea what started this sweeping trend.
My question is this: Guys, do any of you find this sort of footwear attractive? I personally think platform sandals look absolutely hideous and horribly tacky. Most of my friends (some girls included) feel the same. How, then, can their staggering popularity then be explained?
(To clarify a bit, I’m referring to those shoes which are basically flip-flops but with massive bases, usually solid black or white. I’m not sure what they’re made out of, but the structural integrity of some most closely resembles some sort of styrofoam.)
They make a sound like horse hooves. They cause a strange, tottering way of walking, not at all sexy. I suppose some women wear them to look taller. That doesn’t impress me, even though I’m a big tall guy. I know emergency room doctors who sadly shake their heads when they see women in this dangerous footwear.
Gawd, the shoes, the horrible shoes. I ducked into a shoe store on my lunch hour, hoping to find something basic to wear with work skirts and pants, and…shudder. The platforms, the blocky heels, and, no—please–not the boots.
What’s with the nfbsking boots?! This is San Diego! It’s 70 degrees and it’s NOT GOING TO GET ANY COLDER.
I hate boots.
I lived through the '70s once, people. It’s just not fair to make me do it again.
As for the OP, apparently some women believe that having feet like a carthorse renders the illusion that you have legs like a gazelle. These are probably the same women who have never checked out the back view of their super low cut jeans.
I’m a guy, and I like them (on women). Part of it is because I’m tall, so I like anything that gets women up higher. Unfortunately, Mrs. Giraffe hates them, so their popularity isn’t really doing me much good.
Speak for yourself. Quite a few men look at women’s shoes.
…
Re: platforms – they look as good as the feet & ankles in them. Unless they show a lot of skin, platforms don’t especially flatter a woman. Nor do they detract.
The “walk like Jar Jar” and “feet like a carthorse” gave me the giggles.
My problem with them is that it sometimes makes it difficult to find a selection of shoes at a given place, without the platforms. I questioned a g/f about why she liked platforms, since she wears them on a regular basis. She explained it was a lot easier for her to walk in platforms than more traditional heels. Makes sense to me.
I don’t mind the platforms. In fact, I kinda like it when a girl can pull off “trashy” without looking “skanky.”
The footwear I despise, though, are the black, clunky, combat-wear-looking, clodstomping, shitkicking boots. They are not feminine, and I am thankful that the trend has gone out of fashion.
I am a woman and I know I find them absolutely uncomfortable to walk in… this judging from just trying them on in stores for kicks… I don’t own any sort of platform shoe. I am 5’9 and I think I am tall enough, and it can be a problem trying to find a nice heel because there are NO “little heels” anymore. All the shoes have too much height to them, and it saddens me that they don’t make any shorter heels for us taller ladies.
You’re talking about the flip-flops that have three inches of rubber on the bottom, yes? I think they are hideous. Actually, though, the only place I see them is on tiny Asian girls on my college campus. I feel kind of sorry for them sometimes, because a good number of them really look like they are having a hard time walking in them.
Yeah, I can’t say that I really see the attraction. I’m pretty tall and only very rarely is a woman without platforms much past my shoulder. However, I don’t really see that being short is a bad thing for a girl. Apparently this idea is quite popular, but I don’t think I know anyone who really sees it. To be sure, if I ever meet a girl even close to eye to eye with me, I will freak out. Any other tall guys agree with me on this?
Actually, maybe I’ve missed the point entirely; I have a habit of doing that. I assume that the point of platform sandals is at least partially to make people look taller, right?
Heh - for some reason, the idea of revealing sandals amuses me. It somehow seems to imply that a woman with bare feet is a rare and amazing sight to behold.
