Men make better moderators than women

Very good point. I don’t know. But I think even if you adjusted for that you’d still find a pretty solid skew towards men being banned. I wonder if any of the mods have any idea about either number?

I fully admit I’m the wrong person to speculate because I don’t pay attention to the screwy posters or the banning threads, etc. I’m probably aware of 1 to 5% at best of all bannings. But of those bannings I *have * noticed, none have been women (although I’m sure there are some). In fact the only woman I can think of who’s lost privileges in any way is Tuba. (Again I’m sure there are others I just haven’t noticed them).

I’m really not trying to slam on men. I have genders stereotypes/impressions about this board too (though very different from Roger’s), both positive and negative about both genders. If I went into them I’d offend everyone equally. Let’s just say that in my stereotype, volatility goes to the men and blandness to the women.

Very fair answer, and I agree with most of it, uglybeech. Do even the mods know what the gender balance is? It’s not profile information, and so you have to count up how people self-identify as they post. I imagine most mods consider life’s too short.

Then we could get into why mods of either sex are more willing to ban men

Some basic suggestions I’m rolling out of the back of my head, so no cites.

  1. Still many more men surf the web than women. Most of the women that do surf spend most of their time on ebay and dating sites.
  2. Moderators are typically veteran surfers. Back when the veterans were young’uns, the ration men/women on the web was further in the m3*range.
  3. The only female moderators I know of, are on the SMDB. I have never seen one in action. I’ve read some fuss about one of them leaving.
  4. In general, I consider men and women equal. Certainly, we all know that they can be bitches among themselves, but among men they usually get along with everyone real well. So I see no inherent reason from that area.
  5. I see early women moderators as the early female politicians. To make it to be a moderator, or even want to become one, in a cess-pool of men, you have to be a little deviant in one way or another, and/or a little tough.
  6. With most men being moderators, you would expect more banning of men than of women even if there were equal numbers of men and women on this board. Surely, a man will keep as many women around as possible, especially when they are scarce.
  7. Take these comments as seriously as you find necessary.
  8. I think Shirly Ujest would make a fine moderator.
  9. I think Roger Thornhill is training to become a Tabloid reporter, caring more about how many hits his topic gets than the actual value of that topic.
  • m3 = many more men

Ee-Ouch! I thought tabloids were only interested in advertising revenue.

Now, you *really * know how to strike home.

Never come across Gaudere much, except for her Rule. Exception to the, um, rule perchance?
