Men: Please recommend me your best deodorant/antiperspirant

Guys, I need help. It’s not that I need deodorant/antiperspirant more than the other guy, as far as I know, but I’ve found out that 1) I need it, and 2) the ones I use spawn their own odors after a few hours.

First, let me point out that in my neck of the woods, while we use the word deodorant, the word antiperspirant is to the best of my knowledge not used; so I’m not super sure of the difference in American.

But anyways I’m talking about substance you put in your arm pit in the morning to hide odor or even better smell good the rest of the day.

Most of the deos I’ve tried out lately has been of the cheaper kind, I admit, but in any case they seem to turn sort of sour as the day goes buy. No more of it!

I’m prepared to buy more expensive kinds, but not one after another until I find my holy grail of armpit moisture.

So here’s hoping you’ll help me.

I’m in my 40’s, I’m thin, I don’t sweat much, but as I said, regrettably it has become obvious that decent deo would be nice. If I were to choose, the fragrance would be on the masculine side, but I wouldn’t mind some freshness mixed in to it.

I guess I’m a clerk of sorts, usually wearing shirt and a pair of proper jeans (business environment here is a little bit laid back), but not seldom a suit, being a “business man”.

So, all of you deo men out there – which would recommend? (If there’s a matching after shave that goes with it, all the better!)

Than you for your time, gentlemen!

I exclusively use Tom’s of Maine unscented deodorant. Every single other brand I’ve tried and even the scented versions of Tom’s of Maine give me itchy underarm rash. Good luck on your quest, though!

Gillette Sport Clear Gel. No scent, no residue and it bloody well works. The wife and I both use it and rate it very favorably.

Mitchum Unscented Antiperspirant Power Gel. I only shower every other day, and it lasts.

+1. Except I shower every day.

Nature’s Gate and Desert Essence, both in roll-on not stick.

ETA: All of the Nature’s Gate deos smell pretty good, as does the Desert Essence. Also, neither contains any aluminum.

A long time ago I learned that certain deodorants will make my skin breakout. I finally found one I was not allergic to: Mitchum unscented roll on deodorant. It’s not the cheapest stuff on the rack (quite the opposite, really), but it works well for me.

+1 again. The Mitchum products (I use the roll on myself) solved this problem for me for more than 30 years. Whenever I have used something else, I have regretted it.

Hidrofugal Forte, an excellent antiperspirant.

You might also want to try this, which looks pretty wild (works for up to 1 week?).

Speed Stick Ocean Surf. I don’t use cologne because strong smells distract me, but this fits the bill.

I used to get wet pit spots on my shirts no matter which antiperspirant/deodorant I tried. That problem completely vanished once I found Certain Dri. Its a roll-on antiperspirant, not a deodorant and it works by temporarily blocking the sweat glands in the arm pits. Works like magic and is completely safe as the sweat just reroutes to other sweat glands in the body.

Most smell so awful I can’t use them. I used to use Cool Wave (gillete, I think) but apparently you can’t get it as just deodorant anymore (least not in my local stores) and sntiperspirant makes my pits itch, so good bye cool wave.

Since then I’ve been using Old Spice (original round stick formula, which isn’t a round stick, but there’s another original formula Old Spice which is different - from some other brand Old Spice absorbed, and I hate that one).

I find their ads recently to be deplorable, and I loathe the “If your grandfather hadn’t worn it, you wouldn’t exist” nonsense printed on the back, but it works, doesn’t itch my pits, and I can stand the smell, so unless deodorant only Cool Wave comes back, I’m not changing.

Antiperspirant keeps you from sweating. Deodorant doesn’t block the sweat, but covers up the smell.

I swear by Mennen Speed Stick regular.

Another +1 for the Mitchum line. Their roll-on and solids use Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex (same as Arrid XX Solid) and their gels use Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate (same as Certain-Dri).

Me too, and have for decades.

Too late to edit…

Speed Stick also uses Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex Gly, but at a lower concentration. Mitchum: 20%, Arrid: 19%, Speed Stick: 15-16%.

I recommend against any of the spray-on or roll-on varieties – my experience was, they felt like I was being plastic-coated and shrink-wrapped, and they aren’t comfortable.

OTOH, I recommend the type that works like a big stick of wax like a big chap-stik. Use any unscented variety, if that’s what you prefer.

I like the unscented version of Arm & Hammer antiperspirant and deodorant. They’re actually not totally unscented, but they have a very mild and non-intrusive scent.

Right Guard for me.

One more for the Mitchum antiperspirant gel. Great stuff- works well, doesn’t smell funny, and doesn’t stain your shirts.
