Ponytail = All hair gathered into one bunch, tied high up and centered at the back of the head. (If it’s not centered, but there’s only one, it’s a Horrid '80s Ponytail.)
Pigtail = two ponytails, one on each side of the head.
Braids are just braids.
I never wear a ponytail, I just don’t like the looks of them. Pigtails I wear, but not HIGH on the head - I just separate my hair into two equal parts, and hold with a rubber band on each one placed at the nape of the neck or just behind and under the ear. I wear braids the same way, but without the rubber band on the top. I will also wear my hair en queue, pulled back in one bunch at the nape of the neck like a low ponytail.
My first crush was a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader from the late 70’s. I don’t remember her name and can’t find a picture, but she always had her hair in pigtails. To a 7 or 8 year old boy, pigtails and cleavage were an intoxicating combination.
Put me down in the “doesn’t find pigtails sexy at all” column. I can see where they would be convenient if you’re playing sports or something. But as a fashion statement, they can make a woman look like a little kid - or worse, look like she’s trying to look like a little kid. Present company excepted, of course, I’m certain all the Doper women who wear pigtails look absolutely stunning in them.
A vote for “can be very sexy”. I’ll go with the impression that the wearer of said tails is perceived to be fun and light-hearted. I like fun and light-hearted. As with anything, what looks great on some will look awful on others, so pigtails alone do not a sexy woman make.
I loved wearing my hair in two braids. (Also in two little knobs at the top of my head.) Partly because it is a convenient way to wear it, as mentioned above. And partly because I had a partner (male) who thought it was really, really sexy.
In fact, the only thing I miss about my long hair is being able to wear pigtails.
LOOOVE pigtails. One of my favorite celebrity women, Mi Hyun Kim (golfer), wears her hair in pigtails, makes her look ADORABLE!!! She’s only 24 or so, but takes 5 years of her!
But, back to pigtails. I have to admit I didn’t think anybody wore them anymore. But a number of women on the Swedish National Team are wearing them in the Women’s World Cup and, I gotta say, I’m digging them. Of course, women athletes are sexy to me anyway, so the pigtails might be piggybacking (ha!) on the inherent sexiness of the athletes.
Well, most of the time it just looks like you’re trying to look like you’re going on 9. But I know a couple of 25-year-olds that could pull it off with style.
Ponytails are sexy because they permit a better look at the lovely, soft curve of the neck.
If you absolutely must part your hair down the middle you’d be well advised to look at Carrie Fisher circa 1977…
I find pigtails on 7 year olds cute. Pigtails (and short plaid skirts for that matter) on anyone older than 12 seems inappropriate.
On the other hand…a pony tail can be worn by women well into middle age…an old paint spattered shirt, blue jeans, a whisp of hair escaping into the eyes…mmm.
Ponytail = Single grouping of hair.

*Ponytail at 10:30 to 12:00 *- Slowly back away from the insane woman. She may be dangerous. Ponytail at 12:00 (Straight up) to 1:30 am - Cute on girls under 5. Acceptable (but not sexy) as emergency “keep hair out of eyes” on grown women with mid length hair who just rolled out of bed or are excercising. On grown women dressed to go out this ponytail placement indicates that you are just not that bright. Ponytail at 1:30 am to 2:30 am- Very perky hairstyle best worn by very perky teenage or college age girls. Often seen poking out through the hole in baseball caps. On older women this looks like you are trying too hard to regain lost youth and sagging perkiness. Ponytail at 3:00 am (straight back) to as far down as you can bunch the hair- sexy look on almost all women of any age. The farther down it is worn, the more elegant it is perceived to be (but not sexier).
Braided tail is only acceptable when the tail is lower down on the head. Otherwise it looks like some kind of vegetable stalk coming out of your head.
Pigtail = 2 groupings of hair.
*Pigtail above ears *- Very cute on girls under 12. Very sad on girls older. Pigtails below ears (unbraided) Acceptable look, moderately sexy, but at that point why not go with the obviously superior ponytail? Pigtails below ears (braided) can be very sexy, but not as universal as a nice ponytail. Very personality, hair and body style dependent. Not age dependent.
(Searches web, sees that Mi Hyun Kim wears her tails above ears. Confirm my theory that they should be below her ears for more sexiness. Look very childlike as is. Cute, but not sexy)

Pigtails can be good too, but it’s much more difficult for a grown women to look good with pigtails then with a single ponytail.
OOOhhh man, pigtails are very sexy. I just got this one friend of mine to wear them. She left some hair so it falls just to the side of her eyes ( two seperate, um, bunches of hair(?), one on the right, one on the left, you probably know what I’m talking about). Then she had the nicest pigtails ever, I think it was because she has curly hair.
Some girls can pull it off, some girls can’t. I think if the girl is already good looking, pigtails just add more to it. Same thing with ponytail. But ponytail superior to pigtails? Never.
My ex-gf did the pig-tail thing so infrequently, I thought it was kinda hot when she did. She’d only do it around the house while cleaning, just for something different from the usual ponytail. And it wasn’t like she had two things coming out of the top of her head; it was just a ponytail split in two.
The reason I thought it looked sexy was just the novelty of it.

I really think it cdepends on your attitude and how high up you wear them. High pigtails connotate youth, generally 8 and under. I will sometimes put my hair in pigtails for a change and I think I manage to pull them off when I do, usually because if I’m in the mood to wear them that way the attitude just works with it. I usually wear mine just below/behind the ears but not high. (Actually last time I did so I can admit that I was raving. I have a couple of outfits I term my ‘raver gear’ one of which just really works with pigtails)
High ponytails are meant for cleaning days when I want to try and keep as many stray strands out of my face as possible, pigtails and a bandanna are also meant for cleaning days.
