I use scissors and disposable razors. I trim from front to back, trying to get everything as even as possible, then ruffle around with a razor. I only do this when I get that crazy hermit-look, every two months.
Scissors and a comb are best for beard trimming. Use a razor if you have a shaved area. Account for hair curling when trimming, or it will be short in spots.
