Men's Shoes -- How Many Pairs do you need?

One pair boots - safety shoes / walking boots
One pair Wellingtons (not worn in 3+ years)
2 pairs ordinary shoes
1 pair dress shoes
Slippers

Three for me:

1 pair dress shoes.
1 pair sneakers.
1 pair all-purpose casual sandals.

1 pair of shoes I wear to work
1 pair of sneakers I wear when I’m not at work

Keep wearing a pair of shoes until they can’t be worn anymore, then put on the other pair and go to WalMart to buy a replacement pair.

This system has been working for me for over twenty years. Is it hard to tell I’m a bachelor?

Casual shoes

I have dress shoes but the last time I wore those was in September for my step-grandfather’s funeral.

Four:
2 pairs “everyday” shoes – 1 pair white tennis shoes and 1 pair black leather whatever-they’re-called
1 pair sandals
1 pair black dress shoes

I think I’ve got some brown dress shoes in the closet somewhere, but I haven’t worn them in five years at least.

One pair Columbia hiking shoes.
One pair extremely old tennis shoes.
One pair New Balance running shoes.
I really need some new shoes though. I took a dance class in the old tennis shoes, and I wear the hiking shoes everywhere else.

Two brown loafers, one clog/tennis shoe style Nike in gold, gold alligator square-toe ankle highs, knee high camoflauge waterproof boots, one generic pair of boots, and black and white flame skating shoes, for special occasions. Only about 3 of the above are actually in commision or worn oftern. Oh, and there is also the duck. He is for formal attire.

I was going to agree, but then I counted six pairs. :dubious:

Sneakers: two pairs. White and black.

Dress shoes: two pairs. Brown and black. (And yes, plnnr, they are stuffed with cedar shoe trees.)

Everyday shoes: one pair, sneaker-style hiking shoes (i.e. no ankle support). I work in a casual office and don’t need to have dress shoes, neckties, or even, based on the sartorial displays of my compatriots, pants.

Other: Birkenstocks. Don’t get much winter wear, but they’ll be in the primary rotation shortly, so I’m including them.

Total = six.

I’ve got a bunch more “specialty” shoes in the closet, though, including tap shoes, wave runners, moon boots (!), an old pair of sneaks used for mowing the lawn, and the like. Oh, and I’ve also got a pair of deerskin slippers I wear pretty much every night.

So… I’m completely average. Yay me.

High school. I’ve got one pair of regular tennis shoes, one pair of orange converse (that I had to buy for a show, but I still wear pretty often) and two pair of “fancy” shoes.

I have lots of shoes, most that I have saved since High School. I only wear two on a regular basis though.

1 pair of “dress shoes”–I only get a new pair every five years
1 pair of tennis shoes–About every two years

Shoes are overrated, but what inside them…ooh that is definitely another thread!

Nine. And I use them all. I’ll throw out anything I don’t think I’m going to wear in the next few months. Not counting bowling shoes, baseball cleats, or slippers expressly for wearing around the house.

5 black leather, for work.
1 pair high end black canvas lace-ups
1 pair beat-up tennis shoes
1 pair newer, sturdier tennis shoes
1 pair big fuzzy boots ( what? it can get down to like 55 degrees her in California in the winter!)

I think in most of my college/crappy job years I had about 4 pairs, but I’ve been on a clothes horse trend lately.

College student:

One pair of white converse sneakers… everyday wear.
One pair of black skechers sneakers… slightly more traction, good for trudging around in mud, light snow, and the like - basically bad weather wear, since they take it better than the white sneakers.
One pair of indoor soccer shoes… everyday wear in the summer, for the most part.
One pair of adidas running shoes, pretty good quality, for running (go figure!), and also for basketball since I don’t have proper basketball shoes.
One pair of old adidas running shoes, for yardwork and football on muddy/snowy days.
One pair of L.L. Bean boots for ‘real snow’.
One pair of black slippers for wearing around the house in the winter.
One pair of black adidas flip-flops for wearing around the house in the summer.
One pair of black rockport dress shoes, left over from my HS dress code days, that I wear a dozen times a year when I dress up.

So nine pairs of footwear. Honestly I thought I’d come up with more - I know I had shoes EVERYWHERE during high school, like four pairs of sneakers, two of dress shoes, and another couple pairs of athletic shoes around at all times, without even getting started on sandals or boots.

No, because you’ve got twice as many feet as the rest of us.

I’ve got: winter boots
Oxblood Docs (climb a mountain, hit a club)
2 pairs of funky Fluevogs
Black Florsheim wingtips (that I never wear. Never. Anyone want 'em?)
squash court shoes
steel-toed shoes (very good for biking)
sneakers-- outdoors, working out, general purpose when the first 3 pair won’t do
Tevas
Motorcycle boots
Dancing shoes-- Actually, I may have got rid of these, and if so I’m using my Florsheims. But with my wife pregnant we haven’t gone swinging, so I haven’t worn slidey shoes)>

[ul][li]1 pair black “business casual” shoes (tassels, no shoelaces)[/li][li]1 pair of classic black wingtips, for when I have to wear a suit[/li][li]1 pair brown “business casual” shoes[/li][li]1 pair cross-training sneakers, for “everyday” use and for activities like lifting weights[/li][li]1 ragged old pair of cross-training sneakers, which I kept to wear when I mow the lawn. They are now stained a lovely shade of green.[/li][li]1 pair of running shoes[/li][li]1 pair of deck shoes[/li][li]1 pair of hiking shoes[/li][li]1 cheap pair of boots (for shoveling snow and such)[/li][li]1 nice pair of waterproof boots (for winter Boy Scout trips with my son)[/li][li]1 pair of beat-up old loafers (kept at the back door for conveniently slipping on when I take the dog out at night; in their former life, these would have been my “1 pair of brown ‘business casual’ shoes”)[/li]1 pair of flip-flops, for use at the pool or beach[/ul]There, 12 pairs. Of course, each serves a single purpose, I think. I have only one pair of shoes to go with whatever I’m planning for–no decision making required. And I guess 6 or 7 of these pairs could be categorized as “specialty” shoes.

For work: 3 pairs of browns
For weddings/funerals: 1 pair black dress Doc Marts
For normal duty: 1 pair walking/cross-training non-sneakers
For everything else: 1 pair sandals
And a pair of insulated Catepillar work boots I brought from New York to Florida, not realizing I would never ever wear them again, sadly.

7 pair! Who knew?

Dunno about need. I have 4 pair.

1 casual - brown
1 dress - black
1 hiking - green
1 pair of sneakers - white.

They’re loafers, nothing more to me.

  • Three pairs of gym shoes (which rotate daily)
  • Two pairs of waterproof, steel-toe workboots
  • One pair each of Black and brown dress shoes
  • One pair of topsiders
  • One pair of Nike Sandals
  • One pair of Huraches
  • Two pairs of structural firefighting boots
    So, about that many.
