Mention the threads you were going to start but rejected.

smam, I guess it would be legal for you to reply to that old thread and see if it moves by being brought into view. I was surprised at the lack of interest at the time. As I recall, though, somebody else had a similar themed thread at about that same time. It died, too, without a great deal of input.

**Top Five Rejected cuauhtemoc Threads:

  1. IMHO - Which Doper would you most like to stab?

  2. GQ - Halogen Lamps: Best Brand and Wattage for Pot Plant in my Closet?

  3. CS - The Thread of Entire Texts of Copyrighted Material

  4. MPSIMS - Post your name, address, phone, and Social Security number here.

  5. ATMB - What does Winkelreid smell like?**

I bet you’d get a ton of inquiries. I can guarantee at least one. This is a great idea.

Please please please please please?

I recently though of doing - ** Has anyone won anything from the Lara Croft promotion on Lucozade bottles?** I am hyper all day drinking that syrup and I still haven’t won a car to prompt me to take driving lessons yet.

cuauhtemoc, that’s the funniest thing I’ve read all day!

Yeah, some of those might really take off. Shame about all those pesky “rules” though.

I’ll spend days thinking of a thread, and often will write up the entire initial post before rejecting it because:

a.) it’s too personal. (e…g, relationship rants)

or

b.) it’s too stupid.
Usually it’s the latter.

For instance, I know everyone is sick to death of the “Who would win in a fight between…” threads. But I’m dying to post a thread for “Who would win in a fight between Hamburger Helper vs. The Arby’s Oven Mitt?” This idea hit me while watching TV a few weeks ago, and I thought it was sheer genius.

But every time I start to post it, I think better of it.

I thought about starting a thread comparing the symbolism of yin and yang as explained in the staff report on feng shui with the symbolism employed by Edwin Abbott in his novel Flatland.

Contrast the Chinese visual associations with Edwin Abbott’s:

Considering that this comment would only tangentially relate to the staff report, I felt it inappropriate to start a thread in CSR. Then I wondered whether it would take off in any of the other forums, and I decided against posting the comment, until the appearance of this thread.

Mulletspotting, a game where posters keep track of who they saw wearing a mullet where. On your honor, one point per mullet, two points per femullet.

Lissa, how about a SDMB Antiques Roadshow? In addition to providing information on how to care for people’s antiques, perhaps you could even offer appraisals - you know, people could post a link to an item they own, and you could explain its worth, perhaps offer a backstory. Antiquarian could provide information as well, I’m sure.

Your wish is my command. It’s in IMHO.

Perhaps I may be able to identify and provide some back story for certain artifacts, but I have no clue as to their value. We don’t appraise any of the items in our collection.

Oops, my mistake.

I considered (briefly) starting a thread about the Ben Affleck stripper party - National Enquirer broke the news, and it is the weirdest story I think I’ve seen since the Hugh Grant scandal. The Enquirer’s report was quite graphic as to his, um, oral adventures. There’s a thread in CS, but not many have commented the last time I looked.

dantheman, I think you started the thread on a penchant for going south…you might like the story.

I’m not going to post the thread, though, NOT.

I like it when I’m doing it. When others are doing it, it’s kind of oogy. Unless it’s a movie.

I was going to start a thread asking what is wrong with my southern painted turtle, since he’s been acting odd lately. Then I realized I probably wouldn’t be able to tend to the thread very often. Then I answered my own question. In case you were wondering, my turtle periodically becomes frantic to get out of his tank, then hides in his cave. I later noticed that about two hours after this behavior, there will be a thunderstorm. Neat, huh?

Another thread I was going to start was how to deal with the puppy-torturing parents of my best friend without hurting relations with my friend, who unfortunately still has to live with them. I decided it wasn’t worth it, and again, I don’t get to come back here often enough to monitor my thread. (BTW, the puppy is mostly ok now, AFAIK.)

Or what about threads that you would like to see other members start? I wouldn’t mind reading lieu’s rendition of I had an enema 30 minutes before I was due to start work yesterday.

I was going to start a thread in the Pit about the fashion stores in Hong Kong with Nazi-inspired decorations and Nazi propaganda films playing on the walls. Apparently the store wanted a military theme and didn’t realise that Naziism would be offensive.

But then I got hungry and wandered off to the kitchen, and then a friend called and I didn’t have the time.

I tried a mild attempt at getting people to post their SDMB data (registration date, UserID#) which could be gotten by anybody willing to spend the time entering/typing the name into a search. I got no replies. I had to wonder why.

Is there any reasonable post/thread that would help to identify the “active membership” (including lurkers) out of the 37,000+ now on the roll? Just curious.

I think we would need to get someone to pin a poll topic that existed in all the forums GD, IMHO etc. so that people could tag a button that only allows them to do it once. After a few months we would have a good idea of the amount of hardcore 1337 members. You could call it the Active Members Mecca, visit it once before you die.
