Boy, I was way off. Sorry about that. I’m like Nightwatch Trailer. I can’t imagine his being unseated soon. Maybe if he catches a bad cold and is taking drugs or something…
$50,000. THIS close to the record of $52,000. $341,000 total.
I guess that should technically be $341,158 total. Sorry.
Too funn. You made my day, USCDiver. Thanks!
I just saw this guy for the first time.
Has anyone else been close enough to win in Final Jeopardy yet?
I would hate to finally get on Jeopardy, just to run into this guy.
He’s at almost $350,000! Cripes!
I also wanted to say that I knew the FJ he got wrong (the one about Crete.) I guess that means I’m smarter than him…at least in my mind it means that
He did finally do a 5 digit wager, though. Maybe he got tierd of Alex taunting him when he bet conservatively. (You couldn’t wager 3k more? You’d still stand no chance of losing!)
Not that I recall. I haven’t seen every one of them, but in the ones I’ve seen, he’s gotten every daily double and has been a runaway by FJ.
On a side note, I had suspected that Merv’s “just the most amazing thing” was one of those hyped exaggerations that you hear all the time. If anything, he understated.
I’m surprised how conservative he’s been in his wagering. Obviously, he’s doing all right, and he has gotten some DJs and FJs wrong, in which case his conservatism was justified. But if he had bet closer to the edge, while still maintaining an unbeatable margin, he could now have had tens of thousands more than he’s earned.
It seems to me that the longer this goes on, the harder it becomes for challengers. He’s got a tremendous practical advantage in terms of experience with the button, how the show works, and general confidence, and a huge psychological advantage of superiority that must be very intimidating to the new players. Much more so than a mere three- or four-day champ would have had in earlier days.
BTW, can I ask that people not post the outcome of the show before say, 11 pm Eastern time? Or at least use a Spoiler box? It’s not a big deal, I figured that he’d probably win tonight, but Nightwatch Trailer’s post appeared an hour before the start of the first of two airings in my area. If we hold off until late, we won’t spoil it for West Coast folks, either.
Why not just hold back from reading coming into this thread and reading the latest posts until you’ve watched the day’s show?
Oops…sorry about that. I wasn’t thinking. :o I’ll be more discreet.
He wins tomorrow, too. Mwahaha.
Okay, that’s just a guess.
It hadn’t occurred to me that the show was aired as early as 5:30 in some places, and it caught me off guard.
But I’m not trying to lay down the law here. Just a suggestion, and you’re right, Walloon, now that I know, a little foresight and restraint on my part can prevent such surprises.
Okay, so we know that Nightwatch gets it at 5:30 ET. Any else see it earlier than that? Just so we know the earliest possible time someone could post something about the outcome.
I only saw about half of tonight’s Double Jeopardy! and Final Jeopardy! The guy is DAMN good (if not pretty much a stuffed shirt…) But Merv’s original quote of “Amazing” doesn’t seem to be fulfilled yet… I have a feeling this guy might go for QUITE some time. Maybe even win a million. THAT would be amazing…
In Chicago and Milwaukee, it’s on at 3:30 p.m. CDT.
What if he NEVER LOST?
Seriously, what if he (or someone else down the line) kept going for months? I wonder if they’d eventually say, look, that’s enough, go levitate things with your brain and let someone else have a go.
I liked Trebek’s joke - that Mr. Jennings has been on the show longer than he himself has. Oh, that Alex.
Life imitates art.
(I believe the phone call today would come from Stephen Hawking, not Einstein).
I haven’t seen the shows, but what I’m wondering is, what are they doing about the banter? Surely they’ve exhausted this guy’s interesting annecdotes by now.
“And our contestants tonight: Bob is a high school teacher from Peoria, Illinois. Mary is a systems analyst from Kalamazoo, Michigan. And our returning champion Ken is, well, Ken.”
Last night, they talked about his French toast eating contest in college. He ate nothing but French toast for a week in some sort of fraternity rite. Truly, the well is going dry.
I don’t know how far in advance they film the episodes, but this thought just crossed my mind:
What if the guy is still winning now? He’s been living in Culver City for like 3 months, going in to ‘work’ at the Sony Pictures Studio 2 days out of every two weeks and spending the rest of the time seeing the sites and what not.
It seems like King World/Sony/Whoever has a couple of options for this guy:
[ul]1) Let him keep winning to create some ratings buzz (they’re already the “highest rated quiz show” but honestly how many of them are there?)
-
Find some other uber-genius to give him a serious challenge and maybe unseat him.
-
Maybe make the questions easier in the hopes that someone will come in that isn’t as smart but is quicker on the draw with the buzzer.[/ul]
Either way, he’d be a great addition to the SDMB. If he’s not on already, we should take up a collection to make him a paid Member.
Ken? You out there buddy?
