Messages from celebrities on Cameo

There was a minor hijack in this thread.

Anyone ever get a Cameo message from a celebrity? My sister did. Her then-boyfriend bought her one from Ezri Dax herself, Nicole de Boer.

My niece got a birthday Cameo for her dad from Gilbert Gottfried. It was cool. He told my brother a series of personalized one-liners.

It had to have been one of the last bunch he did before he died.

mmm

I had Danilo Petrucci, at the time one of the MotoGP riders for the Ducati team, send a message to a friend’s wife after she was in a particularly terrible Bird scooter accident. I’ll see if I can find it.

I especially liked that he donated all his Cameo money to a charitable cause, don’t remember which one.

About 3-4 years ago, I got my wife one from actress Danielle Cormack (Queen Ephiny in Xena and Bea Smith in Wentworth). For $40 she sent about a 3 minute video of her being silly and charming and mentioning all the prompts I put in the request. Then last year at a convention meet and greet I mentioned it to her and she remembered doing it and even what she said and the silly hand gesture she used. I was impressed and felt my money was well spent.

I did a quick check to see if any of the musicians that I like enough that I would want to spend money on a video from them are participants, but the cupboard is pretty bare. Of that group, only former Husker Du bassist Greg Norton is ready for the camera, as it stands. Not that I thought Michael Stipe would actually do this kind of thing, but I really thought that, say, former Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster might be game, or even one of the Pixies.

I had a beer with Willie Nelson.

I know, I know

I arranged a Cameo for my wife’s recent birthday. We’re both fans of the Josh Turner Guitar Youtube channel. The basic fee was $50, and afterwards I added another $50 as a tip.

This is a link to Turner’s Cameo page. If you click on the link to See All Reviews, you can watch the video for Laurie. And read my review, which I’ll post here:
This was maybe the best present ever. My wife was busy at work, and I was chortling like a kid while waiting for her to check her messages. Then: “Wow! That was fantastic! Thank you darling!:kiss::kiss:” and: “That was very special. Maybe I should send Josh a thank you.” When she got home, l explained Cameo, and (sadly) was demoted from Wizard to Sweet Hubby.

…and yeah, my wife was much happier before I pulled back the curtain and she understood that any schmuck could do what I did for her.

This is the guitar arrangement/performance Turner based the Cameo message on.

Never done it, but checked out some of the people there. One would think that in general more famous folks would charge more, but Christopher Judge (Teal’c on Stargate SG-1) wants $500, but Kevin Sorbo only wants $80. Tricia Helfer is $150.

Billy West at $50 could be fun, though I’m not at the shut up and take my money level.
Jessica “Dixie” Mills is $49 (Homemade Wanderlust - hiking videos) – if I had a friend about to do a epic hike I’d consider it.

Brian

Brian Baumgartner, Kevin on the American version of The Office, made over a million dollars from Cameo during Covid. A two year old article about it is below. He charged $225 for a basic video at the time and more for longer ones

I had coffee and bear claws at an all-night diner with David Allan Coe. A bartender had “spent some time” on his tour bus and they’d hook up whenever he played the area. We thought she was just telling stories. One night he played a gig in Pittsburgh. After the show he arranged to spend a few days with her. It was surreal meeting him and hanging out for an hour.

Same. Unsurprisingly there is no “classical” category under “musicians”. That said, I got to introduce my wife and daughter to Marin Alsop in person already so everything else will pale in comparison.

It’s an interesting eco-system. Some of the people who seemed to be doing well:
Ted Nugent
The Soup Nazi
The ‘J. Peterman’ actor.

Those are widely known ‘characters’ who aren’t strongly associated with youth or good-looks. Anything less recent than Seinfeld didn’t seem to sell well.

I gave one from the director Joe Lynch a couple of years ago for his birthday. He was pretty cool, talked for about 7 minutes, told us a couple of funny stories about working on the TV show Holliston. Well worth the $70 or so I paid for it.

I just spent a bunch of time on the site. It’s interesting how much certain celebrities charge. People are able to leave reviews and some people link to the videos that they received on the review so you can get an idea of what they do before you take a chance.

I want to get a birthday message from Ash Sroka, the voice of Tali from Mass Effect. She does the voice and mannerisms!

I remember searching previously to find the highest priced person on Cameo. Back then (2021-ish) it was Kaitlyn Jenner at $2500. She seems to be gone, now it is the guy from Shark Tank at $1500

The Shark Tank guy has sold nearly 250 videos. Also at $1500 is a rapper named Boosie Badazz who has sold two vidoes and a chef named Shipra Khanna whose new account hasn’t gotten a hit yet.

The actual top is $2000 for a musical director named Gurdeep Pandher whose new account also hasn’t gotten a hit yet so maybe we shouldn’t count it.

When I was exploring I did the “most expensive” search. It seems like a good way to raise your profile, but not necessarily the best way to make money… unless you really can’t be bothered for less than a week’s salary.

For most Cameo ‘celebrities’ it doesn’t seem like a big income producer. The company itself does not seem to be doing great. My memory is that they recently cut staff down to around 450 from a high of multiple thousands. The pandemic was their friend.

Personally I doubt I’ll use the service again. As I mentioned in a post above, the recipients get the biggest kick if they don’t completely understand how you did it.

I’d never heard of this site before, but it looks like a promising source of gift videos. I wish I’d known about it a month ago, which was my wife’s birthday. I’d have gotten her a video from Greg Ormont, lead singer of her favorite band, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. I might do it for Christmas, but I think it would be more appropriate as a birthday present.
