But, as to the actual story, at this point, people really need to stop thinking facebook respects their privacy. It’s hardly the first time they’ve been called out on it and, besides, you can see it for yourself. Go look at your privacy settings on facebook. Then go check them again in six months. They’ll be harder to find, some will seem to have been changed back and there’s new ones that are defaulted to the least private option.
So much for facebook trying to shake the constant accusations that it’s listening to your conversations and targeting you with ads based on what it hears you talking about.
I refuse to give Facebook, WhatsApp, and Insta access to my contacts, no matter how often they beg. There’s zero chance I’m going to allow Meta to video my whole life.
Remember when Google came out with similar glasses and everyone was all, man, that’s creepy. Why didn’t the Meta glasses get the same response? People are just used to it?
People thought (still think?) of Google as where they search and find stuff to buy. They think of Facebook as the invisible intermediary between themselves and friends and family. Google you use, Facebook is just there.
Of course that’s nonsense, or at least has been since Facebook got bigger than just Harvard students. But the public lurves them some nonsense.
You’d think people would learn, after all those reports of Alexa listening and reporting everything you say. But people are stupid. They’ll give up privacy for the lazyassed ability to turn on their lights without walking across the room, or changing the channel without sliding across the couch to get the remote.
For one thing, I think Meta has done a better branding job than Google did at the start. They get referred to as “Meta Ray-Bans” frequently, so including Ray-Bans (a widely known/respected brand) in the name softens up the Meta connection, whereas Google Glass was just Google. (In the beginning anyway. I think Google partnered with Luxotica near the end but the damage was already done by then.) Relatedly, being Ray-Ban-designed, the Meta glasses blend in better and look a lot more like normal glasses than Google Glass. If you remember, Google Glass had a conspicuous camera attached to the side. So Meta is doing a better job of giving itself cover under a veil of fashion, whereas Google misfired in part by playing up the tech angle.
And yeah I think people are just more used to it now. Surveillance tech has (unfortunately) gotten way more normalized in the past 10-15 years.
