So, Guns of the Patriots.
Who here’s planning to buy it?
How much of a bastard is Kojima? (Spoiler boxes, please.)
And what the bleep is up with the Metal Gears that moo?

I’ll buy it. Once I get my house on the market and sold and moved into the city where I can get myself a big screen and a PS3. (The girlfriend’s got an XBox360. It’s too bad those bastards had to make it PS3 exclusive. Orginally they weren’t going to.)
So in other words, check back in a year or so.
I’m tempted. But I never finished MGS1, and I’m the type of person who won’t play a game in a series unless he’s played them all.
People bought a Playstaion 3?
I kid. I’d really like to play it, but I’m not Sony’s biggest fan. Also, I don’t have a PS3.
So anyone know if the rumored 90 minute long cut scenes are true? I can honestly say that if I ran into that in a game I’d turn it off and never come back…
Is that total? Or per?
Apparently no, there are no single 90 minute long cutscenes, but there are many, many, many cutscenes, something ridiculous, like over 15 hours of cutscenes, and some of them are an excrutiatingly long 40 minutes+.
I’ll never understand Japanese RPG’s and similar long cutscene games. Might as well have made a movie. Something’s wrong if I spend more time watching my games, rather than actually playing them.
The pre-release rumor was that there were multiple cut scenes with a running time around 90 minutes. Obviously not true (thanks Kinthalis) but the fact that anyone who got a review copy had to sign a waiver to not mention the length of the cut scenes in the reviews fueled the rumor mill.
Movie? holy shit they put in a whole trilogys worth of cut scenes.
Looks like the corporate hype machine that are the mainstream reviewers are already tossing each other off over the release of this interactive movie, giving it 10/10 and 100%.
But what kind of PERFECT GAME doesn’t let you configure your controls? I want to change fire from R1 to R2, is that too much to ask from l33t nexT GeN software? I know it’s a time honored tradition of next gen consoles to make you have to contort your hands in the most uncomfortable way possible, but these controls are horrible even for console standards. To ready your gun you have to hold L1, then zoom with triangle, then fire with R1, all while manipulating two analog sticks. Why do I have to hold the L1 button to use the gun? It’s so unnecessary, and of course there’s no way to make it a toggle switch. But it’s a sneak game right, so you’re not supposed to use guns. Fine, but the knife requires the same exact process. To stab someone you have to hold L1, then press R1. Why?? At least Metal Gear Solid 1 played like an old school console game and didn’t try to be a clumsy FPS.
I hate consoles. I really hate consoles.
Taling off from the above, the “mainsteam” reviewers have become a joke these days. Tey guarrantee good reviews if you buy enough advertising, practically beg to hand out perfect scores, and generally make me sick.
I used to work at a video game magazine, about the only one which didn’t do this crap. Somehow, the companies still sent review copies and bought ads. I assume the “mainsteam” people are just disgusting brown-nosers.
Any word on whether this has been the system seller that Sony was expecting? I know it’s a popular series but I never thought of it as one that would move consoles.
I’m kind of surprised that there hasn’t been more talk about this game on this board. It’s pretty much THE game the PS3 has been waiting for. It’s really quite good though I haven’t been able to try the online component. I also think the lip syncing is way off. I’m suprised considering this is the latest and greatest high $$ game to come out.
I agree with you about not being able to customize your controls. You should be able to do that in EVERY game that comes out nowadays but very few actually allow you to.
Well, I’ve finally been able to put some serious time into this game and I can say that it is a spectacular game. The cutscenes are REALLY long, I think I may have just watched the LONG one (between missions 2 and 3). The controls and sound are top notch.
The thing that is really striking me here is how realistic the people look and move using the in game engine. This is the first time I can say that I’ve ever seen a video game character that is truly sexually attractive (Naomi). Not as good as a real woman, but she does look great.
Anyone been able to play the online yet?
I thought The Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3 was the sexiest video game character I’ve ever seen. She’s actually a female character who looks like a badass and not a slut. Also, she kept taking away Snake’s pistol and field-stripping it right in front of him. And she has a gun that has unlimited ammunition because the magazine is shaped like the infinity symbol.
Is she an elf?
No, it’s just the way the polygons look. She’s the mentor and mother figure of that incarnation of Snake (who would go on to become Big Boss). She is also Revolver Ocelot’s biological mother (not really a spoiler since you have to have a hidden conversation which is buried fairly deep in the radio chats and put two and two together from that and the Boss’s closing remarks to figure this out, the game never actually explicitly reveals this little snippet).
At times in the game it’s played around with that Snake and Boss’s relationship may have been more than platonic friends and compatriots, but Snake confirms (I believe to Eva) that there was nothing more between them.
. . . You and Jeff Gerstmann?
Heh?
Nah, I worked for Polygon before it went under. Very sad story, one employee’s “creative interpretations” doomed us all. But we were the best, man.
