While I was thrilled with last years Complete Metropolis, I was disappointed because what they meant by complete was only “as completely restored as we could get to the original release”. I was hoping it would include something else. See, for almost 30 years I’ve wanted a copy of Metropolis as it was presented by Giorgio Moroder in 1984: color tinted and rocking out '80s style! It turns out it was released about a week after the Complete version.
Well, I finally got my copy today! WOOT!
I have to say that despite the music being dated, the film looks and sounds great. Moroder’s music is classic Giorgio Moroder, of course, and the stuff by various pop music acts is all a good fit for what’s taking place visually. Surprisingly, the Loverboy track is one of the best parts of the movie. It doesn’t have quite the same feel as Sabbath’s The Mob Rules did in Heavy Metal, mind you, but it’s still a good fit.
One thing that Moroder did that I think really helps the storytelling is the sound effects. In lots of places they are in sync not only with the visuals but also with the soundtrack!
This is by far my favorite version of this film. I’d write more, but I’m gonna go watch the bonus materials.
