Preface: I have absolutely no regard for your opinions, and I will not involve myself in a “debate” with you, especially when you are either being a complete idiot, or deliberately obtuse.
Bush has never “forced everyone who works at the White House to go to Bible study meetings.” You said it was a fact that he did. You are a liar. Pretty simple.
Well, how about if I say that Bush pressures White House staffers to attend Bible study? Is that better? And don’t tell me that when the POTUS says “I missed you at Bible study” you don;t feel a little bit of pressure. Can we at least agree that it’s inappropriate for a president to encourage any specific religious culture in the White House?
Anyway, it was part of an overall rant about how Bush habitually hijacks his own speeches and press confrences with irrelevent religious blathering. can we agree that that is at least as inappropriate as Moore giving him the finger at the Oscars?
Oh, please. When I opened up the microphone to my best man to give a toast at my wedding, I hardly think that if he had launched into a political polemic his behavior would have been seen as acceptable by the assembled masses, even if I had told him he could say whatever was on his mind. **
There’s a fine veneer of bullshit alright, but it’s not coming from the people who are simply saying they prefer their Oscars politics-free. On what basis do you make this claim? Certainly Sol made clear that he thought politics of any kind, left or right, were inappropriate at the Oscars. So have other posters. They’ve all said that the choice of venue is what they object to, not the expression of opinion itself. Are they all lying?
Before anyone criticizes or backs the war in Iraq, please get yourself a little more educated on the topic. Liberals need to stop listening to people like Michael Moore and Conservatives need to stop listening to people like Rush Limbaugh. Both of these guys are ignorant bufoons who like to hear themselves talk. They make a stand because they feel it’s their role, not because they actually have an educated opinion on it.
PBS had a fantastic (unbiased) history of Iraq, Sadam, and Americas relationship with it over the past 20 odd years. Nice to form my own views after watching something like this rather than listening to MM at the Oscars.
In his acceptance speech Adrian Brody, stopped the orchestra and gave his (very touching) comments about the war. He got a standing ovation.
MM on the other hand got boos and the orchestra did not stop playing.
I guess it is the difference between class (Brody) and no class.
I support MM right to make these commnets, but I also reserve my right to say that he is an asshat.
Oh and Kudos to Steve Martin for his in the trunk comment. It broght the awards back to where they should be.
I cannot believe you just said this, particularly after a statement you made has just been proven incorrect. I choose to believe you were mistaken, rather than deliberately lying. That you would choose to believe some of the participants in this thread are lying about their motivations for posting is reprehensible.
Except, of course, that’s not even remotely like the Oscars, which have repeatedly been used for the espousal of political viewpoints, a practice which was expressly approved by the organizers of the event.
In all other respects, I’m sure your wedding was exactly like the Oscars.
No, I believe they are rationalizing. I believe this because I ain’t seen any of these sorry SOB’s whining about anybody else expressing their views in other forums, except perhaps in the recent case of the Dixie Chicks.
C’mon guys, if you’re going to have ANY credibility on this, start bashing pro-war celebs who express their opinions. May I suggest you start with that terrible “Do You Remember?” song? Blech!
IF those celebrities had done so (1) at this venue, (2) in the manner Moore did…I sure as hell would be “bashing” them…umm as I already indicated earlier in the thread.
If Moore had done so at his own book signing…different scenario.
FWIW, I think Toby Keith’s pro war jingoistic diddy sucks.
I’m sorry but I think most of them are just full of shit. They’re pissed off because of what he said, not where he said it. There may be one or two exceptions, but for the most part, i think they just hate Moore for his opinions, and I don’t believe we’d have a pit thread for anyone who had given a “support the troops” speech.
beagledave, Let’s also toss in toss in the fact that Moore happened to be right about what he was saying. It takes courage to espouse what’s right and risk consequences, rather than just go along to get along.
Are you even freaking listening to yourself, Dio? Your vitriolic frothing at the mouth because of your hatred for Bush is digging you in so deep that you don’t even make any sense anymore. Your spouting off unsubstantiated bullshit (mandatory Bible study… riiiiight) and coming off like a silly partisan ass who can’t think straight. Just take a deep breath, and admit you are acting like a loose cannon here, and looking for any excuse to bash. “Bush is not risking getting booed off stage or suffering career damage…”? Hello??? Is the man President by Papal fiat? A political career is about the most dangerous there is when it comes to the consequences of one’s missteps.
I’m not a huge fan of the man, either, but for Christ’s sake! I know you are smarter than this!
Where the fuck did that come from? DtC is saying that expressing an unpopular opinion takes more courage than expressing a popular opinion. And then, if you feel that the unpopular opinion is the “right” opinion, you may feel that the expresser of that opinion is behaving as a hero. He’s managing to mix his thoughts that make sense with enough ridiculous accusations to submarine his points, but this is not one of those ridiculous thoughts.
