That, ladies and gentlemen, was satire. At its best.
Oh, fuck you. How many have yousold this week?
(yes, I’m drunk, what of it?)
Moore is not Twain or Swift, that’s for damn sure…
(agian, drunk, sorry)
Who was under the impression that Moore was a gentleman? His whole shtick is being a pushy jerk, but a pushy jerk who is quite good at exposing right-wing stupidity.
Buying a few share of GM stock so he can go to their shareholders meeting to complain… driving noisy garbage trucks to the houses of waste management CEO’s in the early morning… marching against government funding of Lockheed in a Lockheed town… are these the actions of a nice guy?
This thing is just Moore doing what he does - stirring shit up, being confrontational. I think he’s in the wrong, but it goes with the terrority. If you have the kind of personality he does, you’re bound to be wrong some of the time, and look pretty foolish while you are at it. We’re better off with him then without him, though.
Let me make one thing perfectly clear: My umbrage-taking with Moore has nothing to do with his political ideology, and you people claiming otherwise need to get a grip.
I’ll say this again: If this is humor or satire, in my opinion it’s a damn poor attempt at that genre. I have little knowledge of Moore’s work; I’ve read bits and pieces. Liked some of it, disliked some of it. In my opinion, a good scathing satirical book makes its point without twisting around the facts. Look to Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot by Al Franken for an example of what I’m talking about.
Moore’s whole tour diary reads like the account of a spoiled, self-centered child. Those who’ve said he’s the Rush Limbaugh of the left are on-target, I think. He mixes the same concoction of facts, opinions and agendas. He’s an entertainer. There’s nothing wrong with that.
But I have the same beef with this particular Moore diary entry as I had with Limbaugh when I bothered to listen to him: He’s deliberately misleading people. At least, in my opinion. And that goes against the very grain of what we try to do on this message board.
It’s entirely possible for people who share the same political views as you to be wrong about something. When two different sources (and potentially more) disagree with one source, you have to start questioning the single source.
emulsified: My apologies for the intoxicated stupidity I spewed a few posts up – I shouldn’t have attacked you personally.
No problem.
I just hope your posting wasn’t followed by embarrassing inebriated late night calls to ex-girlfriends, as has happened to many of us.
I’ve never seen Roger and Me, so I wouldn’t know…
Even if you hate MM, you should see Roger and Me. I used to have it on video, but my father stole it to use in his classes(he is a psych/social work professor).
I don’t know if this is an April Fools Day joke, but if it isn’t, here’s more Moore nonsense: he’s flat broke and facing eviction. This, from the guy who claimed a month ago to be a filthy rich multi-millionaire. C’mon, Mike, hire an accountant already…
(If it is a joke, the bit at the end about family deaths is more than a little crude.)
Just my take, but he was probably joking when he said he was a multi millionaire, and he is probably joking now when he says he is being evicted.
I sure hope that last column is a joke, because he’s starting to sound like Whitley Strieber, author and paranoid schizophrenic supreme. Delusions of persecution; ravings about invisible rays hurting your brain; rantings about conspiracies. Those are not good signs.
Actually, it’s probably neither a joke nor the straight dope; he’s just exaggerating everything, as per usual.
Perhaps my reading comprehension is lacking, but it seems that Moore has a hard time understanding what a deadline is.
Twice now, he’s admitted to staying in a place longer than he was allowed, and both times he’s portrayed this as being “kicked out” or “evicted.”
I’m beginning to come around to the viewpoint that he’s writing this as satire. It’s bad satire, in my opinion (I’m sure that’s keeping him up nights).
Just as an FYI, here’s a Primer on Moore Stupidity and a comparison of emails from Bush and Moore supporters. (I swear I’m not out looking for this stuff, I’ve just run across it in my ordinary internet use).
Nice point, Sauron. Maybe we should all chip in and buy the man a Day Planner and a watch.
More Moore, thanks to Instapundit. Moore gets blasted by the Cornell Daily Sun in anticipation of an appearance at Cornell, and also by Salon.com of all places (premium content article, will be free later this week – an excerpt is available from Instapundit here).
Pretty small potatoes. I read the book, it simply seethes with statistics (all cited, I note with approval). Seems if there were a pattern of deliberate falsification, much more could be displayed than is offered. No doubt the real bombshell is hidden in the soon-to-be released premium content. No doubt Ari Fleischer is almost done compiling the documentary evidence in the infamous Clinton trashing White House scandal.
But consider…if George F. Will bungles the RBI averages for Jackie Robinson, is that plausible evidence that he is a racist? Or is it more likely that he is a snotty elitist pundit who goofed?
And the much esteemed Ms. Coulter? I might well believe every statistic she has to offer, she is nonetheless a pit viper. A pit viper with a crackerjack research staff is not an improvement.
And ol’ “Tub O’ Guts” Limbaugh? The man doesnt stoop to buggering the occasional statistic, he tells LIES, baldfaced, double-barrelled, Katie bar the door whoppers!
MM has declined as a brand name, in my view, as he has become rather sententious and posturing lately. And I never did approve of badgering some secretarial drone who has the misfortune of being the minion who tells MM he can’t do what he already knew he couldn’t.
On the whole, however, I think he makes a positive contribution.
Katie bar the door???
Land sakes, elucidator, you are one jive-talking blue-eyed soul brother. I don’t think I’ve seen that expression since I read a book on the Roaring '20s.
It’s not the Straight Dope. It’s Living History Farms!
The article is available now – you just have to pay for it. If you want to read it for free, you have to wait until later in the week. And there’s an excerpt at Instapundit to tide you over if you don’t want to pony up.
And what do Will, Coulter and Limbaugh have to do with anything? Even if I cede for the sake of argument that they are three of the most vile, evil and intellectually dishonest people on the planet,[sup]1[/sup] why does that make Moore’s crap OK? Do two wrongs make a right?
[sub]1. FTR, I like Will, despise Coulter, and am not terribly fond of Limbaugh.[/sub]
David Brock says he was a total liar for years, but now alleges that he’s telling the unvarnished truth. Why believe an admitted liar? (except that one might like what he’s now saying)
BTW it’s in his economic interest to change his political stance. His conservative books didn’t sell very well. Everyone talked about The Real Anita Hill, but it didn’t sell tham many copies.
Ironically, he changed his view AFTER some of his controversial reports were confirmed. E.g., years ago, he wrote the very first article saying that there had been some hanky panky in Arkansas involving Clinton and a woman named “Paula.” Nobody know who “Paula” was, and the article appeared in the right-wing Amercan Spectator, so few took it seriously.
But, now that Paula Jones has been exposed (TOO exposed for my taste) – now he says he was lying?
So cut “Katie bar the door”. Paste “big honking”.
Whatever makes you happy.
