So… they have an infamous animal abuser willing to be contrite etc. in PETA PSA ad, but their condition is that …he has to a pass a psych test to their satisfaction to speak out against the abuse of animals. I don’t know that I really blame Vick for saying “no” to that condition.
Sounds like they added that requirement in hopes he would decline. Good for them if that’s the case. They don’t need him and have no obligation to participate in his image rehabilitation. YMMV
PETA, you can troll fast food companies, you can troll college administrations, you can troll city councils, you can troll television networks. But trolling your own membership? Bad move.
But if they didn’t approach him and express interest and then publicly announce they’ve changed their mind and he isn’t acceptable, how would they demonstrate their moral superiority?
It’s sad for the people who care that much about animals to have the craziest segment of their population as their defacto mouthpiece. I’m all for watching a “who might actually be crazier” contest between P*TA and Vick though.
Nor does PETA. Also, PETA is, within their craziness, often extremely practical: they recognize that euthanasia for overpopulation is the best of a bunch of very bad short-term solutions to the problem, and so they advocate such euthanasia in the short term. It’s similar to their work on procuring better living conditions for meat animals at fast-food chains: they abhor the eating of meat, but they work to make conditions better in the short term.
People underestimate PETA a lot. There’s a lot of nutjobbery and attention-whoring there, but that’s not all there is there.
