Michele Bachmann strikes again

 Are you suggesting she actually wants a revival of the “militia” movement? (It went into serious long-term decline after the Oklahoma City bombing.)

I’m suggesting that she’s so irrationally afraid of an Obama presidency that, like Chuck Norris, she considers it analogous to the situation that made the American Revolutionary War justifiable. She may believe that it can be “corrected” legislatively; she may not in fact see armed insurrection as the best solution. But she clearly sees it as justifiable if things come to that. But she’s too much of a coward to say it openly.

And just like conniving at hate speech gives some of the more virulent racists and homophobes tacit permission to act violently, I have absolutely no doubt that what she is expressing will be inferred as similar encouragement by other fringe whackjobs roaming the wilds with guns and MREs.

Well, with any amount of luck, the MREs they have are the ones that went out with the tainted peanut butter.

I dunno. For one thing, I never saw the militias as anything more than otherwise grown men playing tough guy. They dress it up with comic-book political philosophy, but it doesn’t count for anything, anymore than Civil War re-enactors. So even if she is batshit enough to play games like that, they aren’t going to do anything because they’ve been roused to fury by a housewife from Minnesota.

Where did I suggest they were capable of bringing their twisted fantasies to fruition?

Where is it written that anything but total revolution is acceptable?

Whackos with guns, people, being stirred with a stick. No, they won’t capture the White House, but even if her nutjob fomenting does nothing but increase the level of rhetorical ugliness, let alone justify actual violence, it’s harmful. (Why is it always the liberal figureheads that get snipered?)

I’m gonna make myself some “Reeducation Camp Counselor” T-shirts!

It’s typical that you’d be so stupid that you wouldn’t understand what a push poll is.

Or was this a whoosh?

You’re a simpleton,
Lobohan

I’ll go out on a limb here and say that perhaps because unlike female batshit lefties, the righties believe in personal hygiene and grooming, not to mention botox and implants? This is consistent with their dedication to appearance is everything–they also believe in “feel good but do nothing significant” social programs etc. Just a thought.

Carry on. :stuck_out_tongue:

Personal hygiene? * Ewwwww!*

Michelle Bachmann (R - Batshit Crazy) needs a good tea-bagging, if you ask me.

ohh! ohh! I want one! I already have the chip implanted!!

Do you know anybody willing to take that risk?

Attributing the decline of the right-wing militia movement to the OKC bombing is a bit off- the Michigan Militia and one or two other Midwestern groups were hurt by allegations that they were involved, but not the movement as a whole.

The problem for the movement has been the lack of another Branch Davidian or Ruby Creek-type event. They need in-your-face news coverage of (real or alleged) government misconduct to recruit. The FBI and ATF have also done a very good job of infiltrating these groups and getting the leaders tossed in jail.

Actually, Federal law enforcement agencies overall seem to be better at locking up white supremacists than almost anything else. They bungle the War on Drugs, the War on Terror, human trafficking/prostitution rings, cyber crime, and so on, but by God they’re on the ball when it comes to busting up racist groups. Of course, as a nonwhite, I’m not complaining.

The militias did get a bit of a boost from 9/11, and it wouldn’t surprise me to learn of an Obama-related uptick more recently.

I have here a letter from the International Association of Bat-Guano Processors and Exporters in which they object in the strongest terms to their product being compared in any way to Michellle Bachman.

A push poll? From Zogby? Come on, even you can’t be that stupid.

Regards,
Shodan

 I would have thought that event would have taken support away from any movement that sees the U.S. government itself as the enemy.

Me neither. In fact, there were several reports of white-nationalist groups (distinct from the militia movement but with considerable Boolean intersection) getting a surge in new members after the election.

Posted without reading:
Who Put Thermite In The World Trade Center?

Not really. The truly loony (ie., people who join the crazy militia*) blamed the government for 9/11.

A lot of far-right conspiracy theorists see themselves as fighting the same battle as bin Laden, against the shadowy Zionist plot to take over the world. Most of them blamed Clinton for orchestrating the WTC bombings (Alex Jones calls it “Clinton’s first step toward the Reichstag”), and most of them blamed Bush for orchestrating 9/11 (in order to get the USA PATRIOT Act passed.)

*In case you’re wondering how to tell harmless militia groups (like the one our own Crafter_Man operates) from the crazy white supremacist militia groups who might want to blow up your federal building (see Michigan Militia, Kentucky State Militia, CREST, Christian Patriot groups, etc.), I use this handy rule of thumb:

Harmless militia groups only worry about the Democrats taking away their guns. Dangerous militia groups worry about everyone taking away their guns.

Aren’t you informed at all? Don’t you remember the flap about this from a couple months ago?

And I’ll grant that as a push poll it was piss poor, since its scope was so small. Its actual goal was to generate a set of numbers that Ziegler could use in a bullshit documentary to play to the palin-lovers and joe-the-plumber-ites from the Republican base.

The Republican base is a fucking horrorshow.

At any rate, the DHS and FBI are keeping a careful eye out for a resurgence of RW extremist groups. (pdf file)

And it appears some people have a problem with that.
