Jeeeez…she really is nuts, isn’t she. Makes me wonder what the hell is wrong with Minnesota? I can hardly believe what I’m reading.
Remember that she doesn’t get voted for statewide. Her district consists of the northern suburbs of the Cities up through St. Cloud. And they came VERY close to knocking her out this last time (she got 46% of the vote, against El Tinklenberg’s 43%).
This. It’s essentially a form of deniable terrorism; which up the lunatics until one gets violent, and pretend shock when it happens. Nor is it new; I recall the same thing from the Clinton era. Whipping up the violent fringe is something of a tradition with the Republican leadership.
Yes. Remember the “Montana Freemen” ? Quite likely not - because they were taken alive, put on trial - and made utter fools of themselves. If they’d have been killed, they’d have been martyrs and given the movement a boost - but instead they looked like the fools they were.
That’s not how it works. In the ranks of the forces of evil, the women tend to be sexy, the men ugly. Plus, they tend to have hordes of really stupid minions . . . the Republicans are just following the rules.
Bach-ups?
Something I thought was interesting is that Bachmann’s district has the highest foreclosure rate in Minnesota and one that’s much higher than the national average. (National average is around 1.1%- depending on the source Bachmann’s district has a rate of around 1.5% to 1.9%.)
In spite of this,
and has sponsored none. Instead she chooses to devote her time to real issues like Obama’s patriotism, gay marriage storm clouds, advocating intelligent design and privatization of Social Security (because her district is obviously filled with fiscally responsible people).
How the hell does this nutjob
1- Justify her uber-Christian views when she’s doing nothing to help those losing their homes
2- Keep getting elected (admittedly not by a landslide, but enough nonetheless)
3- Remember to breathe in
ETA: Cite (foreclosure rates vary in different articles, but all concur that those in Bachmann’s district are the highest in MN and higher than national average)
That’s awesome. I want to work “upchucks” into it somehow, too.
I remember a bumper sticker that was floating around this area at the time (late 90s): “Montana: At Least Our Cows are Sane”
Abscess of Malice
A few years ago, I read an interview with Antonin Scalia in the New Yorker in which he said that the government should not necessarily attempt to help the poor, using as his justification Christ’s statement 'the poor will always be with you." Perhaps she is coming from a similar orientation.
Bachmann Speaks Out Against Hate Crimes Legislation
Because, of course, if a straight person driving a car hits a gay person crossing the street, it can be construed as a hate crime. It’s all very very simple. Just like Bachmann’s brain.
Scroll down for transcript after the video. I can’t stomach reading the thing myself.
What’s really a shame is that she actually does sometimes seem intelligent and articulate, and if only what was being said was intelligent and worth articulating, she could be a hell of a politician. Maybe she got knocked on the head as a child and something was scrambled.
Then, by all means, Stand Up for Judas!
I wonder if he said that while Michelle Bachmann was rubbing $3000 oil on his feet.
Maybe news reports about her should always be preceded by the words : "And now, on the lighter side of the news, wacky congresswoman Michele Bachmann…
It is something I wonder about my neighbors as well. I and another Doper live in her district. (Where is the barf emoticon when you need it?) What spews from her mouth really does not seem to match what I think of are Minnesota values. (Or human-kindness values for that matter.) On the local Public Radio I heard that the state Republicans are trying to distance themselves from her embarrassing antics.
I passed along the “batshit crazy” label of Bachman along to my wife. She thinks it is very amusing and sadly appropriate. (Apologies to the Bat-Guano Processors and Exporters association.)
Elvis1ives and Captain Lance Murdoch, thank you for those links. I have wanted to check those sites for a while.
Checking her wicki, she got a degree in Law from Oral Roberts University. (We will pause for a moment for a collective eliist sneer…) but did gad work at William and Mary. which I’d heard is a decent enough school. Studied tax law there.
That’s right, you heard me, she’s a tax lawyer. Not that I’m making anything of that, just sayin’, is all.
I was thinking about this and maybe she is on to something.
Anyone who loses their house in her district likely will not be buying or renting a new place in her district. As such they are no longer voters she needs to worry about as they will be out of her district and someone else’s problem. In effect she is strengthening her hold on the district since poor people (those most likely to lose their house) tend to be liberal.
I got nuthin on the breathing thing though. Some things just defy explanation.
Damn, we all owe RandRover an apology. Turns out his claim that as a tax lawyer, he was safe from being fired is right. Indeed, that tax lawyer mojo is so freaking powerful, it will keep you safe even in a later job where you demonstrate general in(s)anity.
Has anyone ever seen** Rand Rover** and Michelle Bachman in the same room together?
Hmmmmm.
… I’m just sayin’
While this conjecture is amusing, Rand Rover is not batshit crazy, just kind of cold, and isn’t really a conservative- he just doesn’t like liberals.
