In this thread, we’re talking about a Michigan Dopefest.
Big deal, right?
Who cares, 'cause I live in XX state, right?
Wrong! This is the official (okay, well not official) notice that one and all are invited to this shindig (now dubbed Dopapalooza courtesy of Juniper), June 24th in Flint, Michigan. I’m thinking that if I get enough notice, we could get a block of hotel rooms for out-of-towners, maybe some Michigan Dopers could open up their couches, spare rooms, etc. I know I’d be happy to do some airport runs if we get people flying in from different cities.
Also, I think we could probably arrange (depending on the weather) a day at Lake Michigan or some other cool Michigan attraction for the day after/day before the Dopapalooza.
Well, whadda ya think? You’ve got plenty of time to plan - it’s over 2.5 months away. Check out the thread and see what ya think. Persephone has an email set up for it and I’m sure (hint, hint) that she’d keep me posted with the response so I could call some hotels for blocks of rooms.
Amtrack has a station in Lansing (matt, check into the train - my mom takes it to Toronto every once in a while) and we actually do have an airport!
It looks like I’ll be free at that time. Sounds like it will be a blast! I’ll get to meet even more of my favorite Dopers, plus, a summer weekend in Michigan sounds a lot more pleasant than a summer weekend in Phoenix. I’m definitely interested, but I can’t make any promises just yet.
Unfortunately, GF & I don’t intend on any long trips this year. Next time we’ll be out that way won’t be until late summer of next year when we vist my sisters in northern Illinois & southern Michigan.
Chuckle, snort. It is to laugh. I KNOW I will have BBQ ribs, Chicken, Burgers/Hotdogs and perhaps some steaks
Anyone who wants to bring something is mopre than invited to!
I’ll buy a few cases of brewskis and make about five gallons of some killer lemonade called george and will also supply some form of pop for the non-drinkers.
While I would love to have lobster, my wallet just can not handle the expense
Other than these things, I’m pretty much open to suggestions. I’ll be happy to cook anything y’all want. With the exception of my dog that is…
I believe in the other thread, we had mentioned something about going to the Village Inn on Friday? It’s a piano bar. The Dueling Pianos show there is outstanding. And xploder and I are on a first-name basis with the musicians and the club owner. We get treated very well there.
I am currently attempting to offload my children for that weekend, so’s I don’t have to worry about hassling xploder’s daughters into babysitting. If I can (and I’m sure I can), that will free up two bedrooms for anyone wishing to crash here. You’ll still have to sleep on the floor (I don’t imagine any of you are small enough to fit into toddler beds), but there’ll be space, and a door to shut for privacy. There’s also plenty of floor space in my living room, and hopefully by then I’ll have my front room cleaned out. Anyone wishing to sleep here (to share the joy of my company, or just to save a buck) is more than welcome!
In response to the “how many/who’s planning on being there” question, so far so good for me to be there. Young son is semi unshackled right now (getting A’s in 4 out of 6 classes, the other two… sigh, would be getting B’s if he turned in his homework…) and (shiver) has his drivers license now, so only complication is his work schedule.
I’m planning on bringing home made mustards (my claim to fame IRL).
Just talked to my mom, and the LittleGoddess and BabyGuy will be spending the weekend with her! Woohoo! Now I have space for a few more people to sleep/party/whatever.
I can let a few stay at my house also. Beware my dogs, they LOVE to sleep with people. I also have a HUGE tent that anyone wanting to sleep in will be more than welcome to. You’ll have to bring a sleeping bag though.
Looks like it’s shaping up to be a good bash. I put the down payment on the Fest Tent and will make sure that I have enough CHAIRS this time <grumble> so people can actually sit.
As to music. I don’t care WHAT instrument you play. If you want to bring it, please do! We can jam with just about anything. I have electric and acoustic guitars as well as a banjo. I may be able to get a couple of friends over that are fantastic musicians also. Any type of music you like, we’ll attempt
I’ll be re-typing up the directions shortly and will be glad to email them to anyone interested.
Again, EVERYONE on the board is invited. If you live in Little Rabbit Australia, bring your favorite marsupial so the dogs will have someone to play with
Okay. Enough mindless prattle for awhile…time to get OUT of this manic phase for a bit.
Actually, Persephone, I am short enough to sleep in a toddler bed. Alas, I don’t think the bed could hold my weight.
The piano bar thing the night before sounds pretty cool. I’m only an hour away, so maybe I could drive up there and hang out with you guys at the bar for a couple of hours, then head home. I doubt my husband is coming on Saturday, but maybe I could talk him into coming to the bar the night before.
Well, I just got back from the store and have bought a few things for the party…so far, 10 pounds of wings and 6.5 pounds of boneless/skinless chicken breast. I also got a bunch more country ribs, so now we’ll have both pork AND beef ribs. These are NOT your typical cheesy rack ribs either. These are monster sized gargantua ribs! Mostly boneless too!
I’ll be steadily picking things up as the weeks roll by so, again, if you want some type of meat besides what I’ve mentioned (with the addition of burgers and hotdogs), let me know!
We’re supposed to be going to the piano bar this Saturday, so I’ll talk to the owner about reserving a buttload of tables.
That said, I REALLY need to have some kind of idea how many people plan on showing up!
Yep. Got the tent all paid for and have been steadily buying things. Any suggestions on types of beer? I’m pretty much open to anything besides Miller.
Since I’m just a hop, skip and a jump from the Canadian border, I could bring some genuine 5.0 Canuck beer, not that crappy 3.2 American stuff. Any particular preference? Molson? Labatts?
WooHoo!!! Either is good! I’m gonna buy a bunch of Foster’s and Guinness to go with the crappy American brands. And a bottle or two of White Grenache for Persephone
Okay, according to my husband, Fosters and Guinness bought in the U.S. is still only going to be 3.2 percent (something about the import law), but you can buy Fosters and Guinness in the 5.0 strength in Canada. He says, if you want us to, that we can buy the Fosters over in Canada.
I haven’t checked to see if I can make it yet, but if there’s any Molson Brador coming from over the border, I just might have to start firming up my summer plans…
