As a MAC fanatic to my core, it disturbs me to even be using Microsnot products at all. But hey, I will use it if it is better.
It GALLS me to say it, but Internet Exploder for Mac is excellent in nearly every particular. Miles ahead of Navigator overall. I really hate that it is true, butit is, and I therefore switched some months back. (Mostly because Navigator kept crashing, regularly.)
There is one extraordinarily simple thing that Navigator does wonderfully that you would think IE could do…but nooooooooooooooooo…
It’s just…remember where I’ve been for longer than 5 minutes. Remember something more than the last 1000 pages…do you have ANY idea how fast that limit is reached? Pages I visited HOURS ago are back to regular link colors. I HATE THAT.
Navigatore remembers ALL pages I’ve visitied for up to a YEAR. WHY can’t YOU?
Alright. I’m done now. Weak rant, but I just needed to say it, and I don’t have a clue how to say it to Microsnot…their website is ridiculous. Trust that MS will never make simple what can be insanely complex and overdone.
Didn’t know “simple” and “simple-minded” were the same word. I’ll have to remember that.
Stoidela, under the advanced options in preferences, you can set the number of entries in the history. I suspect that this is related to the number of links it remembers. You might try upping the value and see what happens.
Yeah, I have it maxed out, that’s my beef. It won’t take a number higher than 1000. And I don’t believe that’s even working. Because yes, I do spend all day on my poot on the net, but even counting pages refreshed, I cannot believe I am visiting a thousand pages a day! That just doesn’t make sense, so I don’t know what it’s doing.
Ticking me off, mostly.
And WillGolf: I’d sooner have a lit cigar shoved up my nose.
I honestly couldent care wether I use navigator or Explorer. Explorer is a little better for reading BBs as it reads text first then pictures but navigator doesent say “scandisck detects a invalid long filename” Then when you remove the filename you have to reinstall windows because of Exploerer 5.0:)
Stoid…I would sympathize with you…but MACs???
For the love of cheese…WHY??? They are the tools of Jack Dean Tyler and Jack Chick? They are EVIL, I tell you. EVIL EVIL EVIL!!!
Ummm…because they rock? Because they have always rocked? Because they are the tools of 95% of the artists, designers, writers, musicians, actors, and other creative types I have ever heard of having computers? Because they are elegant, fun, simple, straightforward…y’know, everything a computer should be.
I have been a nerd since 1983, when I first learned to use …damn, what was it called? CPM? Then I learned MS-DOS…which I thought was a huge improvement. I adored computers. I thought they were the rock’em sock’em bitchenest thing around. But I remember clearly thinking that they were ridiculously arcane.
Then, in 1985, I was introduced to Mac…and it all became clear to me. The world of computers WAS beautiful, fun, powerful and useful, a delight - it just took Apple to show us how.
And I have never looked back.
(Yes, I know the mantra: "But Windows is just like Mac, blah blah blah…well, I got nooz for yooz: it ain’t. Superficially similarities exist. But where it counts, not even close. You want EVIL…look to Seattle, not Cupertino. And I believe we already have a thread for this in GD if you would like to pursue. You will note when you read it the many people speaking highly of Mac, as well they should. By the way, my comments are to be applied exclusively to the Mac OS before X - I havent’ tried it, but I don’t like what I’m hearing. All the good stuff about it, the stuff that Windows already has, seems to be coming at the price of everything else that makes MAC great. We shall see. )
(and to be upfront, I use Macs too, and am happy with them-I don’t try to insist everyone else use 'em, why do PC users insist I use their machines)
I use Exploder too, I agree that when M$ gets their shit together, they can write a respectable piece of software. Just that as the proverbial eight hundred pound gorilla in the PC world, they aren’t usually forced to get their shit together by competition.
I also us Outlook Excess. But for some reason, every once in a while, it decides that I’m starting Outlook for the first time, and all my saved messages, accounts, address book, everything is wiped clean!
I don’t know, maybe it’s a feature - saves me from having to clean out my files and address book periodically? THANKS MICROSOFT!
Hmm. The only time I have this problem is when I have to reformat my hard drive after deleting some AOL program that I downloaded in a moment of insanity that had gotten it’s evil tentacles into everything and broke stuff on its way out. Instant Messenger sucks. Yahoo messenger rocks.
