Oh please helpful Dopers, help me now!

I am working in Microsoft Visio 2013. Does anyone know how to resize a shape in only one dimension. I keep stretching the rectangle to make the shape wider and it gets taller also. There seems to be some sort of default proportional required resizing. I only want wider.

How do I get this to work the way I want?

You are using the control handle on the left or right side and not one of the corners, right?

Check that aspect ratio protection is off.
