Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game: Fifth Adventure - War in Goblin Gate

Trying a dialect at a time until I get some reaction, I shall put it to our captive that, if he gives me a good enough reason I can put to the bloodthirsty Men and Dwarves in our company, I may be able to secure him a passport to a place I know in lands beyond the King of Gondor’s realm. I have some skill with my tongue when it comes to persuading my wild companions, but as we musicians say, you can’t play a harp with no strings.

And then “bad cop” and “worse cop” can chime in as they see fit.

Removing the bunk from the goblin the party realizes that it has captured a female goblin. She looks terrified. This is the first encounter with a female goblin for the newer members of the party.

How are those doors doing at the far end??

Although the silence from the far room is probably going to pique my interest

Mulligan finds the doors appear to be free of traps and not locked. Elfstan comes down to double check as you begin checking the room the party recently fought in. You find they are interrogating a goblin.

Oh no, a terrified Goblin. Just a reminder that we are supposed to be better than Orcs and Goblins so no killing out of hand, ok?

Despite not speaking her language, I can probably guess that she will say or do anything to avoid being near Gwaelur or Bitur and possibly escape with her life.

So what have you found out? Does she know what other troops or undead are in the area?

Actually, I don’t think either one of us would be all that gung-ho about killing a lone goblin who is unlikely to put up resistance. From what I understand of goblins in most fantasy realms, they are kind of the red-headed step children of the goblinoid creatures. If they’re lucky, orcs and other more powerful goblinoids will use them for gruntwork and actually let them live some sort of life, if they’re not, they’ll be treated pretty much as slaves to stronger goblinoids.

But since the goblin doesn’t know we’re unlikely to actually harm her, intimidation is a very effective interrogation technique.

Bitur seems to agree with my long held belief that there is no harm in allowing the enemy to think that the crazy dwarf just might kill them if they don’t help out the reasonable elf.

I have no problem playing into racial stereotypes when it suits my ends.

So what is the line of questioning?

Well, Gil-Gandel should probably take point on actual questioning, but I want to know about any tactical information that this goblin might be able to share. Locations of other rooms, troop numbers, the amount of trolls left in these caves, areas of deployment, and treasure locations (for the hobbits).

As usual, Ghân’s long-held belief is that torturing prisoners demeans us.

I know I know. You and I have different deffinitions of torture though.

Bitur’s views run along the lines of if you don’t cause physical injury, you’re not torturing them. So he’s probably closer to Gwaelur in that one than he would be to Ghan.

Thoroncir agrees with all of these. Either Gil-Gandel or Ghan would probably be the best questioner, with a glowering Dwarf or two nearby as “bad cop.”

I think you should also inquire about the local undead in the area, see if there are any areas that they do not go.

Oh and there are a couple of rooms further down, which seem quiet, but may also contain some more goblins. The locks are open and untrapped, if anyone gets bored talking to the goblin.

I’m interested in exploring more, as long as someone more durable than me is coming with.

As you know, I entirely agree, and I also dislike lying - to the extent that suggestio falsi is as far as I’m willing to go, and that with no good heart. But Gwaelur has advanced some good points, and I’ll pass them on.

Do not fear to admit ignorance, prisoner. I do not expect you to know everything - and I warn you that it would be dangerous to lie. But do not hold back that which you do know, either.

She says she knows very little. There is total chaos. The word is that all the Dwarves and all the Elves have gathered to destroy Goblin Gate and that the Eagles, Men and even Bears are helping. This area only had one troll in it normally and most of the male goblins tried to make a break for it out the Grave’s Door. All the Undead apparently was up there. The tunnels below lead back to the main caves of Goblin Town. The two nearby door were more bunk rooms. They are probably empty. As to treasures, what treasures were here would already be on the move.

She says there are dozens of tunnels off this main passage and maybe 40 chambers in this area and then a long tunnel to Goblin Town with the side passages a lot rarer. It is a few miles to Goblin Town she believes.

Bitur inquires as to how dedicated to keeping their home in Goblin Town these goblins are.

She does not understand Bitur’s question but Gil-Gandel gets her to understand and she thinks the Goblins will try to break out in force at some point and make for either Moria or Gundabad.

Gundabad is a goblin stronghold, correct?
