Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game. Fourth Adventure. Journey to Rivendell

Ghân will follow Gil-Gandel’s plan precisely.

He will cast a Barkskin on his Armour, wait for the signal, then move swiftly to where he can then cast Entangle or Summon Insects.

He will Speak Animal to Anca and Fang, explaining precisely what to do (stay with the spellcasters, be alert for attacks).

He advises Deor and Gilraen to stay near him and his bodyguards.

I’m game. Miron is willing to act as impromptu meat shield if the wargs close faster than we’re expecting, and so he tells both hobbits that they should feel free to jump behind him if a warg gets too close.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

I am looking forward to it.

As long as we can get passed the circling wargs to the main bunch, silently of course, this sounds like fun.

Figuring that the party well overmatches any given warg or pair of them, Deor will hold his fire until we’re attacked by any large number of wargs.

The party is ready, the scouts move forward as quietly as possible. Folca is in air keeping a careful watch. In 3 minutes the scouts are in position and a warg approaches Miron. Miron takes the first shot at the surprised warg. He hits and does 11 points. His arrow is swiftly followed by a short yelp as Mulligan puts a normal bullet to hit and Gil-Gandel adds his own arrow. The warg drops. Miron’s second arrow ends its struggles.

Miron knows the dead warg will alert others coming in and moves 150’ to his right, signaling the others to follow. It appears the wargs missed the first short yelp. In about 3 minutes another warg lopes into the ambush. All four fire and Elfstan, Mulligan and Gil-Gandel all hit. The warg is up and starts barking out loudly. Miron’s second arrow does hit and it dies. In another three minutes two wargs come charging in Miron and Elfstan starts drilling one. They both hit and Miron hits again then Elfstan hits when it is only 12’ away and drops it. Miron’s third arrow ensures it stays down. Mulligan gets off a special bullet on the other for 28 and blows its head off. The first warg did bark out a loud warning though.

More barks and howls can now be heard. Most from the direction where the 14 resting wargs are. Miron quickly calls out that at a run they can be on us in 3 rounds.

Back at the camp Curu says, “My Knife is glowing, some wargs approach.” Deor pulls Folca back swiftly to look for the incoming wargs.

A single warg comes crashing in nearest Thoroncir. At a decent range he hits it with an arrow for 9. He then draws is sword and hoists his shield. Gilraen begins her song and works on calming the horses. Lorli has most of the horses that ran last time gathered behind her and she is on her Horse of Rohan. Gwaelur fires two of his mithril bolts and hits with both. The warg drops.

Another comes charging in but Curu and Thoroncir charge to meet it. The third comes from a direction closest to Ghân. He throws up and entangle and Gwaelur fires another pair into this one. He drops this one also. Gorbo hits it with a dart. Thoroncir strikes with his sword for 16 and Curu misses with his sword but hits with his knife for 14 more. It drops. Gilraen maintains her song.

Heartened by Gilraen’s song and relishing the experience of battle, as always, Thoroncir holds his longsword high. Elendil!

Hearing Gilraen’s song, this is the time to play Scouts, rally to the main body and begin working my way back, watching out for the hobbits on either side. If too hard pressed for archery, I’ll resort to the two swords and flame one or both* of them.

  • I still don’t know whether it’s possible to flame both swords at once

So, seven dead so far?

Elfstan hears Gil-Gandel’s call and starts working his way back towards the main camp, trying to match pace with his captain.

The scouts pull back in good order. Folca flies out to find the wargs. Folca finds a main body of 10 flying in at great speed. Deor relays the information. The will be on the camp in 2 rounds. The scouts may be in trouble, but it sounds like Gil-Gandel has them pulling back in time.

Hopefully there are only 13 left in all.

Ok, let’s brace ourselves for the battle! There’s only 10 of em charging and we know they are coming, we should be able to wipe them out. Watch out for the unaccounted wargs flanking us. We can not allow ourselves to be surrounded.

I will start with bolts as soon as they are in range, but keep my axe and shield handy.

Thoroncir, let’s say you and I form a front line. Ghan, can you set up an entangle in thier path that the party can stay behind?

Deor, stay safe.

Curu to Gwaelur, “I’m with you as a third.”

Gorbo, “I will do what I can from up here. My pup will help too.” He says from a sturdy Oak branch 13’ up.

Lorli will stay with the horses and mounted.

Gilraen is still singing.

With the wargs close, the scouts under pressure, and not least because it looks cool and allows me to get in a great quote  I’ll go to sword and flame on:

Naur an edraith ammen! Naur dan i ngaurhoth!

Gil-Gandel is happy to see that both of his swords flame. These will cause and extra d6 per hit and with wargs they will have a chance of setting them on fire.

Bring it, doggies.

Deor will prepare to Web anything that gets through Ghan’s Entangle, and stay a little ways back from the front line. Folca should keep an eye out for attempted flankers, too.

I’ll switch to the heavy duty bullets now and use them at range.

Time to explode some more Wargs.

“Oh, and Gil-Gandel, look out- your swords will ignite my webs if they touch them, so be careful not to burn up our defenses! Or, if you feel ambitious, wait until there are several wargs caught in them, then light them up!”

Here is the map of the camp.

I just need to know where the other two entangles are going if anyone wants specific locations.

The pale green pattern round pattern is the Entangle Ghân already cast.

My two cents (just in case no one else speaks up, as always Glee’s own thoughts on the matter obviously overrule anything I am saying) would be to place one to our flank (by the “another dead wolf”) and one directly between ourselves and the wargs, leaving small but usable escape gaps between the three and an easy emergency exit for the party if we must retreat as a group.
