Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game. Fourth Adventure. Journey to Rivendell

Elfstan seems well suited to wait in ambush. As far as the final plan, I’ll leave that to Malacandra.

Let’s try this.

I will be the decoy.

Everyone else waits in ambush.

I will make myself look like a single traveler on the road. Easy pickings for some Wargs.

Now can someone find us a good ambush point?

What are we going to do with the horses and the travellers?
Won’t the Wargs smell the horses and choose them in preference?

Good point, Ghan.

Would anyone like to joing me in being bait, maybe you Ghan? We could keep a couple of horses with us and you can keep them calm while the others set up the attack.
And now that I have said that, it sounds like a really stupid plan. :smack:

Hang on, I will think of something.

Lunch break in a clearing sounds best to me; the bigger the clearing the better, since it’ll give our archers better range. Deor won’t be invisible, he’ll be a tree, well out of the way. We already know that aargs aren’t much for climbing. Besides, most of his offensive spells are Sleep, too weak for a warg. Magic Missile is about the only one that will do damage, other than Web, which isn’t very useful in a clearing!

That could work. Thoroncir could be mounted, lance in hand (gauntlet), in the shadows and far enough back from the clearing that the wargs wouldn’t see him. At a gallop after he hears the first clash of battle, he can make up the distance in short order, however.

To say nothing of wargs.

glee, no worries. It did look kinda silly, now that I read it.

Won’t they smell you? I can try to cover up a little of the smell with magic, but I really haven’t got the right spells to do that properly.

Nothing like that is currently on my list of available cantrips, but is that a reasonable variation of Hide, Change, or Mute? Deor’s willing to expend most of his store of cantrips for the day to get it right.

Would you believe I actually made that change to fix a typo?

Let’s find a nice grove of trees with enough room between them that clear shots aren’t hard to find, with enough cover for those who aren’t confident climbers to hide, and get the elves and hobbits into trees with ropes handy for a quick descent if needed. Then we can leave Gwaelur and Ghan in plain sight, Thoroncir and Gilraen in cover, and I would vote for putting our fellow-travellers safe up in a tree - we have plenty of time to get them there. Gorbo is probably happier hiding on the ground.

Then we should be able to bag ourselves some aargs (as I hope they’ll be renaming themselves quite quickly).

I don’t know, he climbed a tree last time.

Gorbo says a location like that should be simple enough, but beware their noses. They are better than normal wolves and smarter. I’ll be up a tree of course, that is the place to be when Wargs are around. Lorli is happy to be up a tree and Curu will take one with some handy rope. It sounds like bow work for Thoroncir. Deor and the Elves and Hobbits are in the tree but the Hobbits cannot use their slings from the trees and even Miron has some few disadvantages. Only Gil-Gandel is truly comfortable.

So a Dwarf and an odd looking little man have 16 horses in a large grove where the woods are not as thick. Gwaelur works on a few horseshoes to make some extra noise.

In about 20 minutes a loud howl is heard. Ghân interprets it as an attempt to startle the horses but the stand firm.

Suddenly a warg comes at Gilraen and Thoroncir from behind, Thoroncir barely has time to react. He puts a single arrow into it at point blank range and puts himself between the warg and Gilraen. He hits for 10 and drops his bow grabbing for his sword and calling for his shield. The warg bites him 7 and is ripping at his leg. Gilraen his grabbing up his shield and trying to give it to him.

Deor calls out, I see 3 more wargs racing in from the northwest; beware. Another three charge in from the north straight for the horses. Ghân is ready for this and tosses up an entangle to at least slow them down. Gwaelur whips his axe and shield up. Two wargs are stopped by the entangle but one avoids it. It leaps at Gwaelur but he bashes it away with his shield and chops its foul head off with his axe.

Deor attempts a web but instead nearly falls out of the tree.

Gil-Gandel draws a bead on a warg that Deor warned against. Range and cover working against him he fires with his
+1 arrows. He misses with the first but hits the second and third time for 17 total. Gorbo misses it with his blow dart.
Miron hits another warg only once but does 14!
Curu drops out of his tree to help Thoroncir who swings down on the warg and another 16. The warg dies but his clenched jaws do another 6 points of damage for 13 total and have Thoroncir bleeding and hobbled. Gilraen hands get him the shield and casts her cure light healing him 9. He is only down 4.

As Curu races to Thoroncir a warg nearly takes him from behind, a warning from Elfstan turns Curu around in time. He swings and hits with long sword and long knife. The warg takes 38 and dies swiftly! Nearly max damage. He lets out a triumphant exclamation of * GURTH an DRAUGRIM!* (Death to the Wargs!)

Elfstan had valiantly dropped out of the tree to help Curu and sees his success. He turns and pulls out his sling to help against the remaining wargs that are charging into the horses. On her own Kali charges the huge wolf and gathers herself up and at nearly the last moment takes a huge leap over the beast. The warg snaps at the air and his own charge is broken. Kali races away with ease.

Elfstan gets one bullet in this confused warg for 8 more. As this was Gil-Gandel’s foe it drops having taken 25 total.

The final warg makes it to the equines but the three canines were waiting for it and leap upon their larger evil cousin. The fight is fierce and blood is flowing. Gil-Gandel and Miron cannot get a clean shot and instead shoot the two entangled with normal arrows until the die. Gwaelur rushes over to help the dogs and Ghân orders them to clear out, Gwaelur quickly ends the final wargs life. Fang and Fenrig are both injured but the only blood on Anca is the warg’s.

As usual, Ghân assists Gilraen to heal the party and companions.

Then he sympathises with Deor saying "We’ve all fallen out of trees at some point. "

Thoroncir says, “Thank you, my lady, for healing me. I’m sorry you came so near to harm yourself. Are you all right?”

If so, he then goes among the wargs with his longsword, still limping a little but making sure all are dead. He suggests to Gil-Gandel that, if our eyes in the sky reveal the other two groups of wargs are still on their way, we spring the same trap against them.

Well, it happens. Deor checks to see if he’s wasted that spell or not. If he’s still got it, he’ll try very carefully to use it next time around.

Let’s clear off the dead wargs so that their buddies don’t get a warning. Folca will keep her eyes open from above.

Elfstan to Curu, “Mae carnen! Those blows were well struck, but please try to be careful. We don’t want to lose you!”

He then takes account of the battlefield and comments, “Seven wargs. Apparently two of the groups managed to join up before they got here. Maybe we can see the end to the rest before nightfall sets in?”

He then goes to help with the warg carcasses, giving Deor a pat on the back in encouragement on the way by.

If that’s the case, I’ll stay on the ground and lend support this time around.

Deor did lose his spell and he did not get hurt at least.

There should only be one group left of 5 wargs.

Gilraen, “I am fine but I am surprised the one went for me, that is very unusual.” She gives him the quickest peck on his cheek and says, “Thank Sir Thoroncir, I think I chose my Knight well.” She is off to see about the injured quickly before he can reply.
Curu, “Thank you Elfstan, but this time there was plenty of help around and not that many wargs and my knife works great!”

Fang gets a curelight from Ghân as does Thoroncir and Fenrig from Gilraen.

Curu to Gil-Gandel a bit later, “My good elf may I have a word please.” A short pause, “I fear you forgot that the two Shire Hobbits cannot use there very fine slings from the trees and the local Marsh Hobbit does not appear to be a very accurate shot with his blow darts. Probably less than your friend Ghân. That and I have not bow, never having learned the most common of elven skills. Your Thoroncir there is a far better shot than I am and I don’t normally carry a bow at all. I have specialized strictly in Swords.”
Gorbo to Ghân, “Mister Ghân-Buri-Ghân, I know I am probably to old and to unimportant, but is there anyway I could learn to cast those magic entangles like you do? I am most impressed.”

To Curu: "I cannot forget what I do not know - I have never had to command slingers in trees before. It is a constant struggle to remember what mortals can and cannot do. Why, they even sink when they walk across a snowfield.

“Though I don’t mean to decry your courage or your prowess, I admit I was not thinking much of swordsmanship when pondering our recent tactics. We shall know another time.”

For the next group, Elfstan will remain on the ground near Thoroncir and Gilraen. He invites Mulligan and Curu to remain near as well. He will conceal himself to the best of his abilities until the time comes to use his sling.

If our aerial scouts tell us we have some time, maybe we should start setting up camp?
