Let’s wait for the party’s opinion on the final room in the basement. PM Sent.
Hmmmm. I hadn’t thought of this. Could be any item any of us have or have picked up along the way: Thoroncir’s sword, Gilraen’s lamp, or whatever. Maybe Curunauth or Lorliana have something magical - and either irritating or enticing to the forces of evil - that we don’t know about…?
The knight-errant is willing to have the basement room opened, unless Gilraen has a strong objection. He agrees with her that the house ought to be preserved and word given to the King upon the party’s return.
In all honesty, I have to admit that it could also be my mithril dragon.
I’m done with the books for now- I’ll be taking two with me. Shall we progress on that basement room? Once we’ve done that, I’d like to take a look at the orbs in the attic; I’ve got a hunch about them.
Ok, let’s get the basement door open and then let Deor have a look at the globes in the attic.
After that, I suggest rest until dawn, let the storm blow itself out and then look over the tower again. Gwaelur, you might want to be in charge of that operation seeing as we don’t want it falling down on us and you are probably the best person to spot that happening.
As for why we are encountering a lot of monsters on our way? Well, there are several people in this group and probably several items as well, that could be candidates as to why it is occuring. It may also be past actions we, as a group, have taken as well.
I’m sure we will find out in due course.
Not a grammar primer, then. :dubious:
Were there hillbilly Numenoreans? :dubious:
The basement room opens to Deor’s knock but Gilraen feels an almost physical blow. The other humans do to a lesser degree and the elves note that some power is beyond the door. The Hobbits, Wose and Dwarf feel nothing.
What does the party do and who goes first? Gilraen has her bauble lit.
Is everyone ok?
I think the first thing to do is open the door and look inside without actually going in. Would anyone like to volunteer to open the door? Although, as I think I have the fastest reflexes, it is likely to be me opening it.
I will give it the once over for traps, although I don’t believe I will find anything. Any traps are more likely to be magical in nature.
Mulligan finds no traps on the door.
Perhaps, if this was truly the home of a Wose wizard, Ghân would be the best choice. Either that or Mulligan, as her people keep getting left out of old prophesies, songs and curses.
The Wose or Wose-like Wizard past was an aside from the game, that is why I took it to the setup thread.
Gilraen, “When that door was knocked, it felt different from the other magics of this house. I’m not sure the door was meant to be opened. Now that is was, we probably should proceed see if we can make things right again. I feel we stand just outside a sanctified chamber. If you like, I am willing to go first if no one else is.”
“I will go first, my lady, if you might place yourself in peril by doing so,” says Thoroncir. “May I take your lamp with me, or would you prefer to keep holding it?” He has his gloved hand on the hilt of his sword, but suspects the room is a tomb and that he will not need to draw it.
Sorry, Gilraen, you are just a little too valuable to be allowed to go first.
I’m sure Thoroncir would agree.
Let me at least open the door first so we can see in, before we start deciding on who wants to go first.
Ghân has some magic resistance, but suggests a Cleric might load and cast Augury before anyone goes in.
In a quick aside Gilraen tells Ghân, “I cannot do auguries. The clerics of Námo, Irmo, Nienna and perhaps Manwë can, but not those of my order.”
Mulligan opens the door. The doorway is thicker than expected, a full foot thick are these stone walls. The walls are bright white and silver and a bit of gold. They depict scenes of the Two Trees mingling, Idril greeting Tuor near the shore, Lúthien and Beren on the green island of Tol Galen in the River Adurant. A third scene depicts Melian dancing and flowers sprouting at her feet as Elwë Singollo looks upon her. The room lights up and dazzles in Gilraen’s light.
The room itself is smaller than the other three and angles to a single door in the southeast corner. The door is of white marble and has a mysterious crest that Gil-Gandel and Lorliana do not recognize but Curunauth does. “This is the crest of the house of Kanotir. An old house of the northern Dúnedain and faithful of Númenor that traced back to the families of Haleth that lived in friendship with the Woses. Those of the house of Haleth were dark-haired and dark-eyed and shorter than the other Dúnedain. They were a numerous people and had many relatives that settled in Angmar and generally the Eastern parts of Arnor. They were close in friendship with my people in Hollin and were especially harried by the Witchking and his forces. Some believe that one of the Nazgul’s may have been of this house. They were always stronger in magic than most Dúnedain.”
The crest is a sword and a plow crossed over a horse. There is a unicorn fighting a small dragon in the upper right corner and a small grove of trees in the lower left.
Lorliana knows that the last of the Kanotirs fled west to Arthedain and that the family did marry into the Kings of Arthedain. The fell from history though when Arthedain fell. I am sure than many of the Rangers of the North descending from this house.
gazes in wonder
Would my good friends kindly water me every four hours?
Sir Thoroncir simply looks about in hushed silence. He has never seen anything so old or hallowed. In time he asks, “So… is it likely a tomb, behind that inner door, my lady?”
“Remember, that spell I cast will only last ten minutes- after that, the door will magically relock. Whatever we do, let’s get it done quickly.”
As to the knock and 10 minutes, that will be delayed by keeping the door open. Make sure you keep the door open.
"In that case, we will have to see if an wedge will stop the door from closing again.
Oh well, time to take a look and step inside then. "
Mulligan takes a single step inside trying to see if there is anywhere that seems safe. If nothing happens move onto checking for traps and other unwanted attention.
