Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game. Fourth Adventure. Journey to Rivendell

Curunauth answering a question from Mulligan, “This armor is very good. Not as good as Elfstan’s but very good and more ancient. Materially it is +5 chainmail but it is well nigh indestructible. It had to have been made before the fall of Gondolin as only Eöl the Dark Elf ever made Galvorn chain. Galvorn was some strange alloy of his making and its secrets are lost. It was black in color and as strong as Dwarf Steel. I suspect that most of these items can be identified in full at Rivendell. I know a bit about Elfstan’s blade. It is similar to those that the Hobbits carried from the Barrow Downs. Perhaps this one is enchanted specifically against Kkósal.”
Looking over Rilthol for Gwaelur he says, “This is a very well made helm. It should keep your head safe but whatever magics are in it are beyond by ken. I do think the loremasters in Imladris will be able to tell you more or perhaps Deor of course.”

The party finishes downstairs with Deor, Glee and Thoroncir staying to aid Gilraen. She performs a ceremony sanctifying the house using the Rod of Kanotir. It enhances her ceremony and she has a beatific glow about her when she is done. Thoroncir finds himself more in love with her than ever with the at first fleeting and then growing thought that perhaps someday he and Gilraen as one could hold this House and Fort for the Kingdom. She is descended from the house or Kanotir after all.

He asks her his question about the house and she responds, “Yes, I think the party already understands this house is very special and that it belongs again to the Kingdom of Arnor and thus the Reunited Kingdom. I think the house will need to wait a bit longer, but we should find some descendants of the family Kanotir to again hold this fort and area for the King & Queen. I don’t think the party will object and perhaps you can explain it. I have a lot to take in and feel very tired. I feel like somehow the house was drawing power through me and it is an experience I only had once before. Do you recall when we encountered the Dark Sign in that Goblin Cave and somehow I destroyed it despite it not being in my powers? It was a feeling akin to that but different at the same time. I’m sorry but I have no rational thoughts about Kkósal but your guess seem very shrewd and likely to me.”

With that she half collapses and Thoroncir carries her back upstairs and to one of the bedrooms to sleep after getting Ghân to make sure she is alright. Ghân can verify that she is exhausted and nothing worse and needs sleep.

Elfstan could probably help Mulligan into the strange armor. As she wears it for a while she feels it warm to body temperature. This chainmail like Elfstan’s requires no leather underneath and wears more like a woolen tunic than armor. It has a strange feel but a good one. It is unknown if it works with her cloak but it seems unlikely. The Wildcat seems to approve once it warms up.

Deor IDs the Ring and finds it magic is a bit odd. As described it is a Gold Ring with Seven stones sets on it. The stones are of an unknown gem type. It is somehow tied to the Palantirs and will aid detection and distance seeing spells as if he was double his level. It increases the wearer’s vision and allows him to see at night like an Elf. For Deor it will allow Folca the same vision enhancements. Finally it provides +2 protection.

**Does Deor still check the attic and the globes hanging down?
Deor can casts at least two more Identifies before sleeping again and up to 3 more. Does he? **

Deor pours through the books with Lorliana until he is bleary eyed but finds few hints about Kkósal. It becomes clear he could not have been one of the Nine. Nothing rules out either the Mouth of Sauron or a Lesser Wraith. It sounds like he was a very old but yet hale man already in 1524 TA when this fort was still inhabited. Some thought he might already be over 200 years old then.

The horses can go back outside after 4am without worries. It makes the house a much homier once the cleaning detail is done.
In the morning the party leaves Deor and Gilraen resting with Lorliana, Gorbo and Curunauth watching.

What methods are used to search the tower and undertower?

The Gondorian knight-errant’s thoughts are an exhilarated jumble as he muses on what the lissome Gilraen said, and considers what the future might hold for them together. Once she is sleeping comfortably, he leaves her room after a lingering last look at the princess. He decides not to speak to the others about claiming the house for the Kingdom just yet.

After breakfast, he will gladly defer to Gwaelur’s expertise and will help in searching the tower and undertower.

Well, this has certainly been an interesting couple of days. So, on to the tower.

We can have a large breakfast later on, once the tower has been checked over. Gwaelur should be able to tell us what condition it is in and if it is safe for us to go through or whether we need to reinforce any of the sections.

We might want to consider re-excavating the tunnel that was collapsed as an extra way in. There are a couple of rooms at the top of the tower that have not been looked at, which I think are likely to only be safe for me or Elfstan or possibly Gil-Gandel.

After that it will be a case of checking each room out carefully.

Ghan, do you know what this item you are looking for looks like?

I agree with Mulligan, I should probably check unknown or potentially unstable areas out before we go exploring them. I would hate to have something collapse on you.

Should we divide into a group that goes exploring safe/known/undamaged areas and one that comes with me to check out the more structurally unsound?

I also agree about excavating the tunnel, would it be possible for me to give some basic instructions and then have one or two other people work on the excavation while I go around checking other areas?
Also, I got a magic helm! I have ALWAYS wanted one of those.

I’ll definitely check the globes in the attic. I’ll leave Lorliana poring over the rest of the books- I’m sure she’ll need no encouragement to do so!

The globes have a steel rod through them that goes through the roof. It reminds you of your dream. Did you wish to ID the Rod or anything else? Your new Ring makes this much easier.

Lorliana may be hard to drag away from the house. She has already mentioned to you that she wonders if it would be possible to somehow stay longer. She is actually more excited than a kid in a sweets shop.

As Elfstan helps Mulligan with the armor, he says “Don’t worry, you will get used to wearing this mail. If it’s like what I’m wearing, it’s a little uncomfortable to sleep in at first, but we are Hobbits. Sleeping is just one more thing that we’re good at!”

Despite the confidence in his voice when speaking to Mulligan about the armor, inside Elfstan wonders what it means that he was chosen to carry a blade that should be the bane of Kkósal.

I see no reason not to split the group up and cover the area faster.

As long as you, Gwaleur, can determine where it is safe to go, we can cover more ground that way.

Let’s get the tunnel open first and if Curu and Gorbo would like to lend a hand, all the better. While we are doing that, Gwaelur checks out the rest of the tower.

Once the area is safe I suggest:
Elfstan, Mulligan and Gil-Gandel take the first and second floors.
Gwaelur, Thoronicir, Miron and Ghan take the ground floor and basement.

Thanks, Elfstan, although I’m not sure I feel ready to wear it properly yet. I must be wearing something thats older than all of the Shire.

It may even be older than Gil-Gandel

Gwaelur looks over the tunnel and realizes it will be far more work to open back up and brace then it was to collapse. It is probably not worth the effort. The ground being extra wet and the lack of convenient shoring lumber will not help the effort. There is also a lack of tools. How many shovels does the party have? One or two?

Looking at the tower Gwaelur believes it is safe but the people on the top floor need to be careful. It might be best to explore below first leaving a few outside then for everyone to be in and under the tower at once. Ghân is your only spell caster at the moment so you will need him in both locations anyway.

Galvorn is older than Numenor or the cursed Ring of him whom we name not, never mind me, cheeky Took. Were he here to look upon it, even Lord Glorfindel would feel young again; there are few I have known at first hand who would be older than it.

I rejoice in my own gift, but also much at seeing this work of craft. Much ill came through Eol, but in metal he wrought exceeding well.

Suits Thoroncir (note spelling).

With a quick wink to Mulligan, Elfstan adds, “You will get used to that too. It is kind of hard to wrap your head around something being that old though, isn’t it?”

But Gwaelur said noted that might not be safe:

Looking at the tower Gwaelur believes it is safe but the people on the top floor need to be careful. It might be best to explore below first leaving a few outside then for everyone to be in and under the tower at once. Ghân is your only spell caster at the moment so you will need him in both locations anyway.

Ok, so who fancies exploring the tower carefully then.

Gwaelur and Ghan obviously, I guess, along with a couple more.

Any volunteers?

Well, then, should just the smaller and more nimble folk go, then? Because that would probably leave Thoroncir out. He could go keep Deor company while Gilraen sleeps, I suppose…

“You and I are the lightest, Mulligan, and we’re pretty nimble. I guess that means we should go.”

I can come if you need an extra pair of hands. I go lightly clad and my tread is soft.

Thoroncir will remain on guard outside. Curunauth will join him there per a PM from our DM.

Based on a few PM’s Gwaelur leads the Hobbits, Ghân and Elves down into the basement. All have various lanterns lit. Gwaelur is looking for sliding walls and new construction; The Hobbits are checking for traps and looking for secret doors as the Elves concentrate on Secret Doors. Ghân is prepared to cast a detect magic on the way back up to look for any missed magic.

A thorough search of over an hour reveals a secret cache in the basement. It takes a bit of work by the party to discover the way to open it but they succeed. In the cache are a lot of metal items and copper pieces. Nothing is of great value. Though it will probably store better in the house than here. No additional magic is found.

Going up, the Hobbits and Gil-Gandel go up first and slowly look around the second floor. Amid the ash and rubble on the top floor a dead goblin is found and bunch of large bolts, a large ceramic pot, one intact but dirty heavy curtain where all the others are burnt up badly. No secrets are found. This stuff is brought down to the ground floor. When Ghân casts his second Detect Magic he finds there is magic in the floor half way between the door and the stairs down. The curtain did not detect as magic. The large ceramic pot did. The pot is 2’ tall and has 2’ diameter.

It takes Gwaelur a while to pull a good size stone up and he calls Thoroncir and Curunauth in to help. Under this block is a strongbox that weighs a good 200 pounds and appears to be made of iron. It is short work for Mulligan to unlock and disable a simple trap. Inside is a magical short Oaken Rod that must be Taurgol. There is another 3000 gold pieces (150 pounds) and a magic bridle. The box itself weighs 40 pounds.

This is what was found earlier:
Dagger probably made of Dwarven Steel.
Gold Ring with 7 small stones. (Deor’s)
2 brass buttons (Eagles)
Honing stone
the contents of 3 flasks. The Flasks are leather covered heavy glass.
a Medium Shield with the device of a Knight charging a Dragon.
a Cloak that on inspection seems to change colors to blend

On counting there are 350 gold & 390 silver. The gems need to be studied more.
**Still waiting on Deor to hear what else he was going to ID. He might want suggestions or requests. **
