Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game. Fourth Adventure. Journey to Rivendell

At 4:30am on August 8[sup]th[/sup] with Deor, Thoroncir & Gil-Gandel on watch Deor with his new night sight and Gil-Gandel both spot shapes flying overhead. Gil-Gandel believes them to be large bats but they suspiciously hover over the camp a bit and then flew off.

What do the pair do?

(A reminder, Brownie is awake and if needed Folca can fly at night now and see about as well as Brownie. If **Glee **feels Brownie would wake him up for this, have Ghân respond.)

“I would like to think them merely bats,” says Thoroncir, “but my heart tells me otherwise. Shall we awaken the others, or simply remain vigilant and permit them to sleep longer, Gil-Gandel?” He unlimbers his strongbow and nocks an arrow in case the flyers return.

Deor will send Folca, still Invisible, to investigate. She’ll stay well back and stay down by the treeline, just in case these bat-things sees with something other than sight- all the branches ought to confuse them.

Folca will go as directed but also sends back a bit of fear as bats are not bothered by invisibility due to echo-location.

Rouse those who don’t sleep in their armour and need time to put it on - the rest will need less notice. That’s Gwaelur for a start, can’t remember if Miron goes armoured or not. Of course the hobbits are both snuggled down in their hi-tech chainmail. They can sleep on for a bit.

Surprisingly enough, this galvorn is comfy.

ZZZZzzzzzz!!!

She’s welcome to come back as soon as she feels sufficiently threatened. No sense taking risks.

Continues his dreams of pies… zzzzzz…

Folca sees that hundreds of bats are coming in fast and she races to gain height and speed to get back to the party. The party has only 3 rounds to prepare.

After Deor’s shouted warning to the rest of the party, Thoroncir brings up his bow, ready to fire. He will stand between Gilraen and the scores of bats as best he can; if his arrows do little good, he will use his shield to bash as many out of the air as possible.

Gwaelur is up with his brand new helm on and his shield and single handed axe in hand.

He wonders, to himself, how many bats he can spear with his spiked shield before he has to scrape them off.

This being 4:30 am, can I assume that Deor has slept and has his spells back? Because if so, he’ll prepare to throw up a Web just like we did for the last group of flying animals we faced, and cast Sleep on groups of them as well.

Yawn!! Is it time for breakfast yet…

Oh crumbs!!

If its bats, either make a lot of noise or make the area silent.

Ghân is indeed awakened by Brownie (suspicious flying shapes studying us ) and tells her to keep out of trouble.
He casts Barkskin on his Armour, then Speak to Animals and yells at the bats, asking what they are doing.
(This yell should also wake his canine guards.)

Gilraen will cast a Detect Evil , lights up her **Bauble **and begins her Song of Ëste. Missy is apparently on her shoulder. Exposed by her hissing.

Lorliana will grab up a torch for lack of better to do. “Bats? Why bats? I hate bats!”

Gorbo stokes up the fire and grabs a brand for himself. “Don’t know ef I owe ju or ju owe me extry, but sumting shure taint right.”

Curunauth, “Helps stokes the fire and pulls out both swords. I agree with Mulligan, noise and light will help us and hinder them.”

Miron prepares to fire rapidly as soon as he sees them. He instructs Swiftwing to climb, circle and find targets of opportunity to fast dives.

In reply to Ghân there is an odd response only he and the dogs hear and only he understands. “Master commands us to.”

The canines are awake and barking. The horses are nervous (as usual).

I want to wait on Malacandra and then we’ll get going .

Deor will throw extra wood on the fire, using his affinity with it to build the small campfire into a blazing bonfire. He’ll ask Folca to stay out of this as best she can. And he’ll look to figure out from which direction the bats are coming and what objects he’ll be able to sling Webs between for best effect.

I should light up my helm as well then I suppose.

Ghân will tell the party that the bats are under the control of a ‘Master’: - possibly a vampire?!

If the bats won’t stop, Ghân will use Summon Insects.

Deor, use the Mithril Dragon as well.

Set it flying and glowing.

Elfstan to Mulligan, “Do you suppose our pots and pans would be better weapons right now than our swords and daggers? We could make a lot of noise with them if nothing else.”
