Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game. Fourth Adventure. Journey to Rivendell

That’s an excellent point. Ghan, would you mind warning the bats that we intend them no harm and apologize for briefly trapping them before we let them free?

Sadly Deor cannot just make them go away. However Sting is known to cut through them at will.

Many of the horses are injured in addition to be caught.

Curunauth looks pained but well enough calls Thoroncir over, “Carefully take and store some parts of that monster, it will help in the forging of your blade.”

With some exasperation Elfstan says, “What is it with these evil rings?”

He quickly wipes off his Númenórean blade and sheaths it, thinking that it needs a name. He then draws Sting to help cut the horses and ponies free.

Splendid effort, all. The unfortunate thought is that this is but one of the servants of our foe. Nevertheless we shall journey to Imladris in good order - we have yet to meet anything that our full strength cannot confront, and by husbanding our strength while travelling as fast as is consistent with the same, we may hope for a safe arrival.

But, by blessed Elbereth, never since the Nine Walkers did travellers have such eventful times upon the road!

Sorry not to have been more active in this battle; I was stuck in a series of meeting all day!

If Gilraen is uninjured, Thoroncir asks her for a cure for his wounds. He then calls out in Horse to gather the mounts back in good order. He checks on his trusty warhorse Seafoam and feeds it some Goodberries for any bat-inflicted injuries. He will then take Curunauth’s advice and, with his longsword, carefully cut away some of the wing fabric and claws of the Delgwil, in sufficient quantity as the Elf-smith directs, and stow the foul carrion in a spare sack.

Gilraen heals Thoroncir and between herself, Ghân and Miron they get everyone and every horse to full. The number of Berries saved up took a big hit.

It takes a lot of cutting to free all the equines and it is probably beyond the parties abilities to free all the bats, the spell will eventually end though a large number will perish in the magic web. I estimate nearly 40%.

Curunauth directs Thoroncir in secure various parts.

To the entire party, “My thanks, I think the assaults on us since we left Tharbad were to get me. I don’t know how he became aware of my movements but I believe he directed the attacks on us. In the end it may prove to be a good thing. His pursuit left us near to the ancient Hill Fort at a fortunate time to have us retreat there. We cleared out a nest of trolls and you all came away with relics that aided us in killing him and perhaps some greater evil in the future.”

To Curunauth: "I for one - and I believe I speak for us all - would have it no other way. We live; we triumph; we make the world safer for our fellows of our several kinds; and we catch glimpses of a greater world that was in times gone by. Who of us would have sat safe at home, though fed and warm, and held back from such deeds as some may look to tell their grandchildren?

“Besides - if the thrill of battle makes me not over-bold in my speech - in shared peril may not love blossom, and in deeds of valour may not merit be won that may be pleaded before the seats of noble sires, as it was with of Beren of old and so is ever again until the ends of days?”

winks at no-one in particular, and certainly no Sea-knights in the party

As to Gil-Gandel’s remarks, Thoroncir has noticed Curunauth and Lorliana making eyes at each other lately…

Thoroncir looks warily at the Delgwil carcass and says, “Tell us more, Curunauth, about your late foe. How long ago did you first clash with him? Are there others like him still out there? What are the strengths and weaknesses of his kind? And what shall we do now with the spear, jewelry and particularly the ring?”

Curunauth rambles on a bit, "The Delgwil are odd foes. Each looks a bit different and some say they were originally carved in hopes of keeping demons and evil spirits at bay up in Angmar. They were like statuary on roofs but the Witch-King found a way to infest them with his evil servants of the restless dead. I suppose they are related to the Barrow Wights but more mobile and more capable of independent action. I fought this one a long time ago when I was in the rearguard of Glorfindel’s company fighting the forces of the Witch-king. It swept down on the humans and I ran to intercept it and sliced off part of its tail. Indeed that tail was use in the forging of my Sword and ours swords will be both forge and magical brethren now. The Delgwil have a stony exterior that is tough to hit and resist well non-magical weapons and magical spells. They are not the easiest undead to work with in forging you know. Now I understand that the early blades probably used the old Shadows of Morgoth somehow.

The ring should be brought back to Imladris, I believe we may be able to destroy it, either that or friend Ghân could see what 6 bolts of lightning does to the ring. The spear we can take and the jewelry. It should be easy to identify back in Imladris. Tis’ to our good fortune that this one seems to be a bit of a magpie but then I have heard the Barrow Wights near Bree have similar fondness for treasures and gold."

Might destroy it. Also might charge it. Let’s get an expert opinion before we try that- we’re not far away.

Well, the campsite is a bit of a mess but at least everyone is ok. Somehow I don’t feel much like sleeping anymore and I, for one, would like to move on a bit. At least we should be at the Last Bridge in a day or so.

I would suggest leaving the ring until we get to Rivendell. Didn’t someone mention a couple of months ago about wanting to take a trip to Mount Doom?? Careful what you wish for

Curunauth looks at Deor, “Hmmm never thought about it charging the ring and he did throw lightning. Good point young Wizard. Mulligan, I know a small bit about these rings, my Father created many of them. Mt Doom should surely not be required no matter what either Sauron or the Witch-King did to corrupt this one. Even if Sauron himself made this it is still but a trinket compared to the Rings of Power.”

It is nearly 5:00 am on August 8[sup]th[/sup], it will be getting light by 5:30am and sunrise is near 6:00am.

Gilraen, “Deor will be without spells today and Ghân & I will be low. When we do camp tonight we best all be on last watch so as to get our sleep early.”

Lorliana, “How do we get the webs of the horses and is there anything we can do for those bats?”

Gorbo, “Plenty fresh meat for me en da woofs* et least. Anyone want some?”

  • On purpose for Gorbo to refer to all 3 canines.

Cut the webs, I suppose. I can’t dispell them, although they will weaken and break down over the course of a couple hours.

Thoroncir will speak to the horses, one by one, to calm them and ask them to hold absolutely still, and then will cut the webs loose with his dagger.

In which case, we may as well pack up and start on the road again.

Gorbo, I have never eaten bat before, how do you suggest cooking it. It sounds interesting. Fried Bat Wing? Stewed Bat?

So who would like breakfast before we go.

Gorbo takes a 3’ long stick and sticks it through the bat and holds the bat over the fire. “Wait til bat crisps up en cut et ope’ en et da ensides.”

Turning slightly green, Thoroncir will decline the offer of roasted bat for breakfast. :: shudder ::

Yes, bat makes incredibly sustaining trail rations. You wouldn’t believe the feats of endurance you’ll perform if it means reaching somewhere where you won’t have to eat bat.

Oh well, I’ll make a normal breakfast those who want it then before we are off.

As for tonight’s watch, can I suggest that Thoroncir and Ghan swap and Renee joins the last watch

Leaving it as
Elfstan and Mulligan on first

Thoroncir and Gwaelur on second

Renee, Deor and Ghan on third

Just for the one night though.

While Gorbo is munching his first leather-wing bat, he pulls out a small leather flask and mumbles, “Don’t mnow, es güd 'ith duck sulce”, as he pours some on.

August 8[sup]th[/sup] at 5:35am passes quietly with a few more showers during the day. Deor cannot ID this night but both Gilraen and Ghân make extra Goodberries. The party is a day behind schedule of course. A peaceful night passes except Lorliana wakes at one point screaming. She ends up clutching the book and going back to sleep as Gil-Gandel plays a soothing song.

August 9[sup]th[/sup] The party makes good time, they should hit the Last Bridge by noon on the 10[sup]th[/sup].
Deor Identifies three more items.
Glinras – Gleaming Horn: The gleaming horn of Hollin is a musical flute and horn made of mithril in the shape of a unicorn’s horn. When played by a bard/Elven Harper is will raise moral in a large area giving allies a +1 to hit & saves. The area is a base 6” radius but goes up by 1” per level of Bard. Can send an ALERT blast over a great distance, base 2 miles + 1 m/lvl; Send a song to a distant friend or relative over a great distance to ask for help and where to go. Owner is Proof vs. Poison. While riding a horse the horse gets x2 endurance and +2 protection, to hit & damage. The magic horn has two separate wind paths. It will potentially do different things with different songs and based on the skill of the user.
Medium Shield: with the device of a Knight charging a Dragon. +3/+5 vs. Breath & ½ dam.
Large ceramic pot: The pot is 2’ tall and has 2’ diameter. Restores rotten food to fresh once. Slow cooks ½ time.

Lorliana again wakes in horror that night. Again Gil-Gandel helps her to sleep as she clutches the book.

August 10[sup]th[/sup] the party reaches the Last Bridge.

Gorbo makes his goodbyes and asks a boon of Ghân, “It would greatly aid my return if you could spare me some of those magic berries. It will keep me from hunting and scrounging for several days. Good luck all and thanks for keeping me alive.”

The party makes good time on the road and will probably make Rivendell in 2½ days.

That night Deor he Identifies three more items but needs to leave the 3 flasks for now not having the equipment to Identify them.
2 brass buttons (Eagles): Buttons of Fastening. Button and unbutton on command.
Dagger probably made of Dwarven Steel: .+2 and will stab stone up to 6”. If used it gives a +25% to climb stone walls but noisy. It could be used to chip through a stone wall.
magic bridle: increase speed by 50% up to 25” +50% endurance (not for Elven/Unicorn)

Lorliana sleeps with the book from the start of the night and makes it through without nightmares.

(Please feel free to append goodbyes or start dividing or at least loaning out the magic items.)
