Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game, the Game itself

You are doing fine with the Sleep and Magic Missile. Ghân’s got more 1st level spells, so let me do the Detect Magic.

Ok, I think a plan is coming together here!

So Mulligan sling shots the orc drawing some fire. Ghan and Thoroncir sneek in from the oposite direction while Mulligan is causing a distraction and hit them with detect magic/entangle, meanwhile the rangers and other quiet folk can flank.

Once detect magic has been cast Thoroncir will give us a signal (don’t want to disturb Ghan while he is casting) and the Dwarves and heavy armor/loud folk will make a direct charge. Then the flanking light armoured/quite people will attack from behind with Deor casting sleep/magic missle (Deor, do you still have sleep available or are you out? I can’t remember) back there with them.

Now, is that a plan or is that a plan!

What are the flaws? There must be some.

I appreciate your caution, but the visible orc probably attacked in the previous combat (breaking his Invisibility).
Given they have been running away for an hour, it seems highly unlikely they are setting traps and trying to outflank. How would they know we are even following?

It’s true that Fireball is the alternative to Dispel Magic  , but these are just orc troops (with one dangerous leader - but he’s used several spells already).

It’s a fine plan.

Deor is out of spells, but can act as the eye-in-the-sky (see post 519).

Detect Magic will be cast before we go in (it lasts 12 rounds), so the first you’ll see of Ghân’s handiwork is when the Entangles start. That will be a signal all by itself.

The key decision for our brave Took is whether slingshots will:

  • attract the orc’s attention away from Moose bringing in Ghân (probably)
  • make the orcs stop running to return fire (possibly)
  • be too dangerous for the hobbit (maybe … depends if Gash can cast something)

What Exit?,

If Ghân’s Detect Magic picks up Invisible orcs, is that enough to allow him to Faerie Fire them?

Beat me to it by five minutes.

Sounds like a plan! Is there anyone left to hear from?

Yes! Boy was I hoping you or another player would think of this.

It sounds like the plan is in place and we will use the Hobbit’s distraction to lure orcs into visibility and to give Glee a chance to being his Det Magics, Entanges and Faerie Fire.

Am I correct in thinking that Gil-Gandel, Brin and Caramir will then start bowing down the visible orcs while the heavies charge?

I am a little loss on the Thoroncir leading Ghân in part. Did that mean he would remain with Ghân to protect him?

Deor/Folca will be scanning for escapees to direct others.

Thoroncir kindly offered to protect Ghân, particularly whilst casting or dismounting.
(See post 526).

Ghân will ask Moose to bring him within range (once Detect Magic is running), then ask Moose to guard him whilst Ghân gets off Entangle and Faerie Fire.
Thoroncir should be able to keep up!

I have four 1st level slots left at present. Detect Magic uses one up, so use either a second Entangle or a second Faerie Fire, whichever seems best.

No doubt Moose will charge in then…

If Gash appears, Summon Insects on him (as often as possible - I have 2 slots available).

Gil-Gandel carefully gets ahead of the orcs.

Brin and Caramir shadow the orcs to the north, which is downhill.

Mulligan gets himself into position uphill (south) and prepares to sling his first bullet.

Moose and Ghân with Thoroncir close behind go ever further uphill to get Ghân into position.

The first bullet strikes the visible orc, injuring it.

Ghân casts detect magic, identifies the front 5 orcs.

                    • -N-E-X-T- -R-O-U-N-D- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Two orcs appear firing bows as Mulligan misses with a second bullet. The injured orc goes tearing up the hill to get the pesky Hobbit. Both arrows miss.

Ghân casts entangle on the front five figures.

The Dwarves and Theogrim charge with Merry following them up.

Brin and Caramir pop up and prepare to fire on the visible orc.

Gil-Gandel keeps a sharp eye on the Orc charging Mulligan, prepared to fire.

Moose cannot resist and charges towards the orcs.

                    • -N-E-X-T- -R-O-U-N-D- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Gimli, Gwaelur & Theogrim lead the charge spread as far as possible.

Mulligan fires a bullet into the charging orc and drops him; he goes over backwards and tumbled down the hill.

Brin & Caramir both hit one orc that was shooting, causing his arrow to go wide and short and him to drop very dead.

Ghân & Theogrim close in a bit, realize they can hear nothing over the din, but Ghân stops and casts Faerie Fire on the orcs in the entangle. Three of the entangled invisible creatures now glow.

Moose somehow goes through the entangle with no visible affect. He blasts into an unseen opponent and sends him to wherever it is orcs go.

The other orc shoots at Mulligan and hits (for 3HP)

Gil-Gandel is in very close, hiding with his Lothlorien cloak and stealth abilities. He hears chants like someone casting and fires rapidly in that direction. He does not appear to hit, but is greeted with a satisfactory, “What the hell?”. The casting appears interrupted.

A large orc appears hitting Moose on the flank with his scimitar (for 8HP)

Brin and Caramir shoot at the second archer and both hit again. The orc of course drops. Caramir, “We make a good team sir.”

Gil-Gandel fires another arrow where Gash probably was but with nothing to show for it.

Thoroncir hears grunting and light cursing as he sees something struggle through the entangle. He takes a long sweeping swipe with his long and feels a satisfactory resistance and is rewarded with both a loud and long curse and blood flow. The orc tries to return the favor and turns visible, but the Gondorian Light Chain Mail turned his spear.

                    • -N-E-X-T- -R-O-U-N-D- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Brin and Caramir target the one moving Faerie Fire figure. Brin misses, Caramir hits and the orc drops.

Moose twist around but the orc dances out of reach, circling quicker than Moose can.

Mulligan comes down closer looking and listening for Gash.

Gil-Gandel pulls his swords out and closes in for the same job.

Thoroncir finishes off his now easy to see opponent with a nice surgical cut.

Theogrim puts on a burst of speed and charges the orc on Moose skewering him on the point of his bastard sword. The orc stumbles and Moose quickly takes advantage of the opportunity to rear up and come down on him hard.

Gimli is heard lamenting, “damn those humans and their long legs”.

Brin and Caramir each shoot a separate Faerie Fired but not moving foe. Both hit and both orcs drop turning visible shortly after.

The five dwarves are sweeping in every direction seeking Gash or any other invisible foe.

Ghân casts up another Faerie Fire lighting up the last two foes. One is stationary and one trying to evade the dwarves.

Brúni gets the lucky blow and then gets stabbed by a wicked looking dagger. Gash now visible gets to meet the combine attack of Gil-Gandel’s two magic blades, Gimli huge battle-axe and wicked spiked shield and Gwaelur Battle Axe and War Shield. None will ever know for sure he struck first and what strike killed him, but of course Gimli proclaims one for himself.

                    • -N-E-X-T- -R-O-U-N-D- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Moose goes crashing through the entangle, again apparently undisturbed and ends the final orcs career of raping and pillaging.

The orcs lay dead. Gimli strikes the head off Gash. Ghân notes that Gash has some magic on him still and approaches closer.
Mulligan, Moose & Brúni are injured.

Wooohoooo!

Gimli laughing, “Woohooooo indeed lad and a fine deed we can now report. Let’s make sure all these foul folk are really dead and not playing stinkin goblin.”

Deor will run up to get closer to the fighters of the group in case more Orcs are around and invisible. He will then assist Ghan in bandaging the wounded. Once the wounded are bandaged, begin searching Gash carefully with Mulligan’s help to find anything of magical value.

Shout ahead to Gash “Carefully! He may have dangerous magical objects on him. Let Mulligan and I assist you!”

Ouch!

But it was well worth it

“Well done, my gallant friends!” Thoroncir shouts, the joy of battle clearly still upon him. He will stick close to Ghan and, sword in hand, keep an eye and an ear out for any more hidden foes.

It just occurred to me that Invisibility in D&D is the same as with Klingon Birds of Prey - as soon as you attack, you lose your invisibility!

And Thoroncir’s boon companions put me in mind of a joke: a Man, a Wose and a Moose walk into a tavern…

Yes. There are a few superior forms of invisibility about, which it would be tedious to catalogue, and we can be thankful we didn’t meet any of them.

@Gwaelur and Gimli: “You two can argue ownership of that one for yourselves.” :), bow.

Ghân uses a herbal cure on Mulligan, Moose & Brúni.
(It’s one per person, right? Then he has 7 left.)

He thanks Thoroncir for his trusty bodyguarding.
“Once the party are secure, I look forward to your help while I forage.”

He thanks Deor for his help with bandaging (and continues to explain First Aid and Herbology to him).

He focuses his Detect Magic on Gash, and suggests to Deor that the party stand back and watch those who can (Mulligan, Gil-Gandel?) search the body for traps.
Ghân will state what is glowing magic.
“Nobody likes losing their treasure and sometimes they leave surprises…”

Ghân: It was well worth doing, for both goodness and for profit. We were far stronger than they, but no doubt future battles will be harder."

I have some ability, but I suspect that Mulligan Clever-Hands may have more.

Ghân: (cough) pick (cough) pockets (cough) … (loudly) surely two checking for traps is better than one!
