Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game, the Game itself

I like the idea of you searching, although the Rangers can undoubtedly find tracks almost up to the cave.

Could Folca keep an eye on you two from above?
Could you agree signals to Folca that would send her to us with a message?

That’s ranger - singular and with a small ‘r’.

Of course, if Deor will interpret for us for a few minutes, we can agree something suitable.

I have high hopes of the ranger, but it would still be best to keep him and the rest of you hidden, unless he is sneakier than I have been thinking. To each his own - I could just about follow a dragged log through a sand-dune, if it was soft sand and I knew which way it started.

Ghân can also speak to Folca, if that’s ever needed.

Almost forgot to comment on this.

Brin: Not you too. The woodland Elves I would patrol with at times mentioned walking trees, but they were just trying to see how dumb we Men really are.

Did I just answer a talking Moose? There must be some really weird stuff in this southern water. Smoother than vodka, it is.

Sorry!

(If we are in Woodland, Ghân can help Brin track.)

Ah yes, because elves are well known for thier sense of humor.

Apropos of the control thread…

Thoroncir says, “My friends, circumstances have thrown us together and we have done remarkably well together for having never met before. But with the division of our party and the departure of my lord the Prince Caramir, as well as the hazards we have yet to face, I think ought to agree upon a leader. I suggest that Gil-Gandel, skilled at warfare and woodcraft, take up that duty, if he will. I would welcome differing views, though, if aught are sincerely held. What say you?”

Since I can see through Folca’s eyes, it won’t take much in the way of planning to interpret signals.

I say proceed- let the Hobbit and the Elf scout out the cave entrance, then let’s get moving inwards. I’m looking forward to the fight ahead- in a dungeon or cave, we’ll be at the advantage if we can find a bottleneck, especially with the many ranged fighters we have with us.

Can Moose go into caves?

Moose, probably cannot enter the caves. Very unlikely.

He says, “Scare em out, I kill orc and prosper.”

So it looks like the party will remain here will the eye in the sky keeping Gil-Gandel and Mulligan in view as long as possible.

The two sneak forward and head for the trees and bushes.

What precautions are you taking as you approach the tree line?

Ghân agrees with Thoroncir (and stresses that the party can be proud of what they have already have done)

I’m looking for the best cover I can find to hide in, using my natural gifts and the Lorien Cloak, and then making my way slowly and quietly forward, keeping a sharp lookout for any guards. I don’t want to attack any guards to begin with, but creep around until I’ve marked them all. I suggest Mulligan do likewise. We’ll arrange a rendezvous for half an hour’s time where we can discuss our findings.

Hopefully by then we’ll have found both a cave entrance and any lookouts. If we see any we think we can backstab - i.e. not the large, tough variety that might still be up and fighting after being hit - we’ll dispose of them if it looks like we can do so without alerting anyone else. Then we can bring the main party forwards.

If we achieve all that without disaster, our next intention is to find out the location of any prisoners, and if Mulligan and I can get to them, we’ll notify the main party and then go and do so. But if we see nothing before we reach the cave, we’ll get the party to give us five rounds start and sneak inside, again looking to find prisoners and arm any capable-looking ones, which we hope will happen round about the time the fun is getting started at the entrance.

The main party, of course, need no instruction to keep the heavily-armoured fighters together as a screen for the lighter-armoured and spellcasters.

First one to the Halls of Mandos gets the drinks in!

What he says.

The main party rests and takes it easy.

Deor lays back and concentrates on seeing with Folca.

Gil-Gandel and Mulligan spend about 22 minutes nosing around the front door of the orcs using maximum stealth.

They have located two guards hiding in the bushes and the actual cave entrance. The guards appear to be not wearing armor and one might be napping.

The trail leads into the trees and then a path snakes through the stand of trees and ducked into the bushes directly in front of the cave in a way that would make it very hard to see if passing by.

At this point Gil-Gandel hears a muffled scream from inside the cave follow by a shriek that sounds like it came from a young woman.

I guess the rest of us have to wait until notified…

This is excellent.

What , if any, can Folca see of the above?

If nothing, then D_Odds is right about us waiting.

We need to wait for Gil-Gandel to check in.

Checking in

Mulligan, let’s deal with the guards. You take the one who’s napping. People, the plan as before. Five minutes from now, storm the cave and make all the noise you like.

Off we go, being as stealthy as possible without delay - hope to deal with the guards and get our two selves inside, where we may do some good in the confusion! Once in, make for the screaming. We of Lorien remember the torments the Orcs visited upon the Lady’s daughter herself, and we will prevent the like if we can.
