I’m sooooo glad Theo isn’t here to witness this foolishness.
She smiles, “Thank you, but I feel guilty getting you to do part of my job, I must at least carry this one that I was sent to fetch.”
You have sadly forgotten how to speak for a while as her smile took away your power of speech.
Gwaelur needs to buy some spare bolts for his xbow. But other than that needs nothing in particular and spends the rest of his time in the city either training for the upcoming adventure or relaxing and talking to folks.
Thoroncir will simply float happily about three inches off the ground, walking alongside her, until his power of speech returns.
Burn her! Burn the witch!
OK, I’ll pop the 93 Berries in my Magic Pouch (and tell the Fighters they can get injured!)
I thank Moose and Merry and put the extra 36 Herbal cures in there too.
Moose, the pony is so I can ride along and yet leave you completely free to charge at orcs!
On a beautiful May 25[sup]th[/sup] with the sun shining bright, three day after your arrival in Minas Tirith Caramir visits in the late morning. He brings 4 others with him.
Caramir, “Greetings, this is Lady Renee of the House of Healing, a acolyte of Estë. She will be traveling with you as your healer. I understand she knowledgeable of the indeed and local history. She has just traded in her white training raiment for the gray raiment of her order. Fear not, she is wise beyond her years.”
Renee appears to be young, not even twenty. She also appears to be a rare beauty.
Renee, “Thank you Prince Caramir, please just call me Renee, I am just one of nine on this mission for the Kingdoms.”
Caramir presents the other three, “This is Riglo of North Ithilien, and he is a skilled ranger and has been on missions into Morder. He will be scouting by himself in Ered Lithui.
This is Lorinden of the Forests of Ithilien. He is of Legolas’ people and a skilled tracker. He will be leading three of his own people into the Dead Marshes to check out other leads.
This is Captain Helton of Lebennin. He leads a mounted troop of 60 light cavalry and archers. They will not be scouting, but riding the land and waiting for our signal fires if we think we have enough to take the orcs.”
He then introduces the party to those he brought with him.
“I will be leading a small party of Rangers of Ithilien. We are all skills archers and stealthy.”
“The five groups will work separately, but if you need help light a large fire at a high point and help should be on the way. We need to find the Uruk-Hai and orcs and be wary of their shaman leader. Ideally we will ambush a few, gather information and pull back to a central meeting point near the D in Ered Lithui on the map.
Each party should be strong enough to take on any orc scouting or hunting group or at evade them.
Except the Shaman of unknown powers and strength, we need to beware the Hunter Killer. These are specially trained Uruk-Hai elite that have specialized for years with strong bows and a fearsome archers of great strength. They are as strong and hardy as four orcs. They are faster and better than any other orcs.
You will all be supplied with rations for the trip. Of course anything you find is yours on the mission and at a minimal of 25 gold will be paid to each of you.
I will be glad to answer what I can and I have hopes of leaving tomorrow early.”
Ghân thanks Caramir for the information and introduces himself and the others to Renee. He explains he has some healing ability himself and suggests they discuss which spells to load.
Ghan has:
3rd level: Summon Insects, Neutralise Poison
2nd level: Barkskin, Cure Light Wounds, Goodberry, Flame Blade, Heat Metal
1st level: Animal Friendship, Detect Magic, Entangle, Faerie Fire, Locate Animals, Speak to Animals
Ghân mutters to Deor “Should we make the Cleric Invisible? It would last a long time - but we would have to be careful when walking along, or setting up for a battle…”
P.S. What is the terrain like in Ered Lithui?
It appears you can ride through it, but then wouldn’t you be easy to ambush?
It is a desolate land of short tough grasses and scrub, but we will ride to it and then probably go on foot into the hills and mountains.
Thoroncir welcomes the other adventurers and thinks solemnly of the challenges ahead.
So Renee is a colleague of Atheniel, who rode out with Gilraen to meet us when we returned to Minas Tirith?
“We… we could, I suppose,” Deor says slowly. “I’ve never tried Invisibility for longer than a few hours. Let me read up and check exactly what cancels it- I’m not sure if casting a healing spell, for example, will cancel it. Renee, what spells are you able to cast?” Continue discussing with Ghan and Renee the spells we’ll be loading. Now that I’ve got several new enchantments that enhance fighters, I’m really tempted to try them out, and I’d like to know what Renee can do in that vein before I decide what spells to load.
Reading online tells me that spells like Bless don’t cancel invisibility- What Exit?, is this still true?
Now, a Orcish shaman, that’s probably an evil cleric of some kind. Do we have any additional information on him?
There are four other parties to watch for, then: Caramir himself and his party of rangers who we may conceivably meet, the lone Ranger (rimshot!) who will probably see us long before we see him, the Elvish party in the marshes who we’re unlikely to see at all because we’ll be in the mountains, and the cavalry contingent, who will be hanging back. It is possible, then, that we will end up being the primary healers- I know that rangers have some healing spells but we may need to heal more than just ourselves. We’ll have to pick our battles carefully- no one has a higher opinion of the Rohirrim than I, but they’ll be so badly outnumbered that the only way we could defeat the enemy in open battle is if we can keep the Rohirrim mounted, and that means flat, clear terrain. I suggest that our goals should be assassination of the shaman and/or Hunter-Killers, then leading the main enemy force down out of the mountains where the Rohirrim can really shine.
There’s nine of us in this party? And, you know, we’ve got an elf who’s a whiz with a bow, a dwarf who’s one heck of a tank, a wizard, a couple of men who are quite handy with swords and bows, and a hobbit with light fingers. God, this sounds so familiar. Maybe I read it in a book… It would be singularly appropriate if there turned out to be Nine Hunter-Killers under the command of the One Shaman.
Renee, welcome to our group and I look forward to working with you in this expedition.
To the other groups, I hope you are all successful in your missions as I hope we are as well.
Ghân:
"Casting Bless, Cures, Chanting etc should all be fine to keep the Invisible running. But it may now be unnecessary because of her cloak.
In which case we shuold consider who else would benefit from it…
Orc Shamans are the Tribal Clerics (usually maximum of 5th level).
I agree that we should destroy the Shaman and/or Hunter-Killers first, then leading the main enemy force down out of the mountains where the Rohirrim can really shine. How do we do this?!
(Remember that there is little cover and that our worthy Fighters do clank in their Armour.)
Ghân is honoured to be compared to a halfling hero.
Perhaps he should name his pony Bill!
The invisibility spell is only cancelled by combat, you deciding to drop it or your death. Blesses and heals and really anything Renee does will cause no problem. The invisibility will last a very long time on her.
Caramir, “Sadly Deor, we have no extra information on the Shaman. That he is similar to our more war like priests is very likely. Expect some nasty spells from his sort. Mostly though, I would suspect his ability is in commanding the others through fear. That is often our enemies greatest weapon, so be brave and of good heart.”
One correction, the cavalry unit is Gondorian not Rohirric. It is possible that a few of the members hail from your lands, but they are in active service as part of the army of Gondor and thus Gondorian for this purpose.
Lebennin is a part of Gondor and close to Minas Tirith in fact.
Thoroncir smiles warmly at Renee. He will make sure to replenish his supply of longbow arrows from Citadel stores before leaving Minas Tirith.
What Exit?, what’s missing from Caramir’s introductory phrase that Renee is “knowledgeable of the indeed and local history”?
Wow, I butchered that one, it should have read:
Caramir, “Greetings, this is Lady Renee of the House of Healing, an acolyte of Estë. She will be traveling with you as your healer. I understand she is knowledgeable of undead and local history. She has just traded in her white training raiment for the gray raiment of her order. Fear not, she is wise beyond her years.”
BTW: Any cite for the setup thread on Smaug being the last dragon. I do not think that was true. Even if said, I believe there were counter arguments.
As I said, Gandalf didn’t say there were no dragons left - only that there were none with hot enough fire to melt Rings of Power. But they were presumably pretty far afield.
"Ay, Renee welcome! " Gwaelur claps her on the back in a friendly fashion, “it is good to have another healer along. This mission sounds more dangerous than our last outing and I suspect I may get a few cuts and bruises when going toe to toe with some of these beasites. But I suspect the beasites will fare far worse than we.” Gwaelur smiles a smile that is just a little too large for the situation. He is very excited to be heading back into battle.
None ever with fire hot enough to melt the one ring, not even Ancalagon.
