Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game, the Second Adventure, Scouting Ered Lithui

Sounds OK to me. The Sea-Knight will help Renee, if she needs it, but otherwise will do as Prince Caramir or Ghan (in charge, in Gil-Gandel’s absence) ask.

From a gaming standpoint, does it make sense to have Malacandra so far away from the rest of the party, doing other stuff? Don’t want to make more work for our estimable GM than necessary.

Sounds fine. Is there a stream nearby where we can look for the carp necessary to ID things? Have we searched the local area and corpses thoroughly for more items? Should we find the necessary carp, what is my chance to identify items per try? I remember that we picked up an item or two that helped. And I suspect we may have gained a level, too, which helps my odds even more.

Did you jot down what Items you picked up. I think one of them eliminated the need for the Carp.

I am perfectly happy to take Mulligan along. Let’s be off.

I’d have to check. I’ll dig through the old threads and see what I can figure out.

I found this bit about the things bought for ID:

If the material component is the goldfish, then I’m in the clear and can begin IDing things in the morning. I’ll load that spell, then.

And finally, I’ll be in transit to my summer job, so I may or may not be able to post. Deor’s looking to ID everything we found and feeling confident and unworried about the notion of us fortifying and waiting for a day or two.

I’m away for the weekend - playing face-to-face D+D

Ghân is delighted to hear that no goldfish will be harmed during the use of Identify - so he doesn’t have to carp on about it, and can scale down his opposition.

Ghân is happy to use Plant Growth to help.

Don’t start in with the fish puns, glee. You’ll only start floundering and making a rod for your own back, and the outlook will be bleak if that’s your sole source of humour.

Malacandra, you fell for that hook, line and sinker.

Have fun, glee!

::bump::

Hoping we can get moving again soon…

Before Gil-Gandel sets out with Mulligan, Ghân detects for magic and the treasure finders carefully check and empty all pouches and sacks. Twelve items are magic, but two are evil.

Gil-Gandel, Gwaelur, Captain Helton, Brin & Riglo confer on the items and make the following determinations of make. Then Deor works on identifying the 10 items over the next week and trains for fourth. This allows him a second chance at his failures. His ID chance is 15% +5% per level +5 for the magic pearl. So 35% followed by 40%. His two items are a Magic Pearl that acts as a material component gives a 5% bonus and a Magic ruby that eliminates the constitution drain and thus allows him to do many per day without harm. (appleciders, please add these to your sheet, I will do the same)

Let’s assume 6 items to the party and 4 to the rest. Theogrim, Mulligan & Renee will be excluded by DM discretion, so roughly one item per person. This gets tricky as not every character has a magic item that fits. Please post what item(s) you are interested in. Small note, the helm or staff might be useful to Ghân but they are beyond Deor’s ability to safely ID. Perhaps Ghân would be interested in taking both to be identified back at Minas Tirith. It is a bit of risk, but potential high reward.

• Evil Staff from Shaman: Orc made
• Evil Helm from Shaman: Orc Made

 1. Long Sword +2: Númenórean make
 2. Long Sword +1: Númenórean make
 3. Banded Armor +2 for about 6’ tall: Númenórean make
 4. Scimitar +2: Orc Make
 5. Strong Bow +1 for 18:51 to 20 strength: Uruk-Hai make.
 6. 18 Strong Bow arrows +1: Uruk-Hai make
 7. Chain Mail +1 for 5’8” to 6’: Dwarf Made
 8. Tinder Box: Dwarf make. Light fire under any conditions, max of 3 rounds under worse conditions. It would also act as a spell enhancer for some fire spells. Identify could not determine which ones.
 9. Spear +2 Elf Make good for thrusting or throwing if skilled.
 10. Leather Riding Harness that provides mount a +1 protect and additional 10% endurance while mounted. Unknown make.

Treasure: all told about 2530 in cash with about 1260 going to the party for 140gp per. There will also be goods that can be carried off and sold back at Minas Tirith so expect some more gold upon return.

Gil-Gandel and Mulligan ride off by 10am and the orcs of course departed. The details of what has been done and the need for spare horses are all listed. Caramir is pleading for a troop of dwarves and heavy infantry to be recruited to press the current advantage.

The next day six more riders will leave as a second messenger team.

Renee & Ghân with the help of the Rangers and some skilled riders have completed healed nearly everybody. There are a few broken but healing limbs.

Moose is very upset by the Orcs departing alive. He is finally convinced that he cannot attack them and promises he will not but he says he needs to leave and heads west. He does not care about a share.

Orc Scouting: The Rangers and riders have seen little activity. The day after the battle (when Gil-Gandel headed West as messenger) Folca spotted a few orcs headed south into Mordor.

There is nothing in the pile of items that works for me, so I will happily choose last and take my items back to the city to trade.

I highly recomment the dwarven mail and tinderbox. Good solid Dwarf made items, particularly the mail if you fit into it. Nothing is finer than dwarf made.

Thoroncir would be very happy to receive item 1, 3 or 2, in that order of preference. If he gets one of the longswords, I’d like to name it and write a short backstory for it, too!

Unless anyone else wants it, Ghân will take the +2 Scimitar.
He’s not keen on the two evil items, but would be interested in finding out what they do exactly.

DM, since a week has passed, I assume we have reloaded spells. Also Ghan could have cast 5 Goodberries each day to rebuild his stack.
I think that Ghân only took one weapon (blowpipe) and got Herbology intead of a second weapon. So I think he is -4 to hit with the Scimitar and can learn how to use it at 6th level.

Although I could get some use out of a +2 longsword, I do far better with my bow if I can possibly use it, and to date I have been able to. (My elven-blade is already on a par with the lesser sword on that list.) I can’t get any use out of that bow - my archery is founded on finesse, not brute strength! Maybe the riding harness?

Gil-Gandel makes it back to the Watchtower of the Old Gates in three days as expected. He has no problems along the way. Gil-Gandel sees extra activity at the tower. It appears a company of infantry and support is at the gates.

Gil-Gandel seeks out the Captain of the Tower and relays all the information and requests a fast messenger begins the relay back to Prince Eldarion. Mulligan helps fill in some details. Gil-Gandel then heads out to see to Cúran and Mulligan sees about the location of the mess hall in the tower.

At the stable a small figure awaits Gil-Gandel.

Gil-Gandel realizes it is a Hobbit. He introduces himself as Elfstan Fairbairn and he has an urgent message for Mulligan Took. “When you return, can you take me to Mulligan?”

Gil-Gandel informs him that Mulligan is here and that he is looking for supper currently. Elfstan thanks him and rushes off.

After Cúran is groomed, fed and looked after, Gil-Gandel catches up to the two Hobbits. He finds out that Pippin is sick and Mulligan will return back to Minas Tirith and Elfstan will replace Mulligan.

The Heavy infantry will start out tomorrow for the encampment. They don’t know about dwarves though, that will need to await further messengers. It will take the infantry up to 11 days to travel the 225 miles.

They wish to know how the foraging is as they are not prepared for a long siege or campaign and the supply lines are not very good at this point. They number 155 in all and have 30 draft horses and 6 fast light war horses.

Gil-Gandel does find out there has been no word yet from the Elves that went into the Dead Marshes.

(ask any questions and then I will get Gil-Gandel and Elfstan back to the party)

I’m back…again

Thoroncir can have the better longsword, and I’ll take the +1, as I melee less often. My bow is better than those found - can I use the arrows? Sound like wizard slayers to me.

During the down time, Brin will make himself useful as one of the grunts, doing normal grunt duties while the Knights and Rangers do the important stuff.

The arrows are very usable by you, they fit your bow or the magic strong bow the best. They would not work as well for a long bow user. They are +1 and built very sturdy. Expect them to get an overall +9 saving throw per use. They should last for a long time.

As to normal duties, the Rangers expected you to work with them and the healers. You might not be as good, but you are still much better than almost anyone else and every skilled hand is appreciated.

Thoroncir will help Renee as needed and will keep her company, if she welcomes it. Otherwise he will stand watches and do anything else he’s asked by Prince Caramir and Ghan. He’ll also take time to write a long letter home to his parents, describing his experiences since leaving Minas Tirith.

The Encyclopedia of Arda reveals that Elfstan Fairbairn is Elanor’s son and Samwise Gamgee’s grandson. Cool!
