Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game, Third Adventure, Ered Lithui Mystery Creature

Thoroncir would like to keep the magical shield that’s already proven so useful to him, if that’s agreeable to everyone. If the party sells any other items and splits the proceeds, he’ll donate his portion, after expenses, to the Order of Sea-Knights of Linhir.

Once the party settles in for the night, he’ll add to his letter to his parents, describing all of our recent adventures.

13 items for 11 party members and possibly Hodwain. This should not be too bad for dividing.

The 3 items and Jewelry from the vampire all radiate faint evil. The loot should be kept separated as Deor found out painfully. That could have been worse if he had actually carried it around for a while. (Think Barrow Wight treasure here.)

The 10 items from the Orcs are all clean of evil taint.

We know the Large Shield has some strong magic and the War Axe appears to be excellent. The Spear was able to hurt Hodwain, though nothing special. The armor was abnormal and exceptional.

During this adventure, was any other treasure divided up that left some party members worse in the draw than others. I don’t recall but I will try to check.

I know Miron hasn’t gotten anything from the draws yet, but I think that’s how it should be: he started with really great equipment, and I don’t think we’ve ever found loot that wouldn’t have been put to better use in someone else’s hands.

I did some additional checking:

Chain mail and bow are magic.

The first group of Orcs.

Post 142: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=9910210&postcount=142
Magic Chain mail (Dol Amroth style of +1 top +3 AC*)
Magic Short Composition Bow (probably made by the Haradrim)

Post 160: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=9916060&postcount=160
The Chain Mail is +2 and will not rust. It allows the wearer to swim in the armor (if they can swim). (This is worth more than +2 chain but less than +2 Elven Chain)

The Magic Short Composition Bow has a +2 to hit and damage and adds strength for penetration and damage. It can handle any strength from 12 to 19. The bow string will not break and can remain strung. It could be used even from horseback, but not while the horse is trotting or charging. (This should be considered a very valuable item)

The sleeping and dead orcs have little of value but the King and his three strong arms are another story. The king carries a high quality pouch of possible elven origin. It weighs a good 10 pounds and does feel like it has coinage. His armor is high quality as is a knife he carries and behind the throne is a huge war-axe of great quality. Gwaelur guesses human made but well made. His crown is well made and valuable looking, possibly Dunedain or Númenórean origins is Gil-Gandel’s educated guess. He was wearing much, mostly gaudy jewelry. One of his rings is magical as is a ruby pendant. One of the scimitars is magic and the large orcs combines for about 180GP and 324sp

Renee can offer up one more detect magic after everything is gathered. Everyone else works on gathering things back up near the King’s Hall and prepare to leave. The Detect Magic finds that the finely made Long Sword and the Large Shield from the same orc & the Spear that Hodwain brought over are magical.

**From Orc leader outside early on when first found out about the Vampire: **

WE’ll be able to assess the situation better once everything is Identified.

Quite so… and quite a haul!

Absolutely!
Deor will take items only if they really benefit him drastically more than they would anyone else; he feels guilty because the party favored him so well last time in Minas Tirith, purchasing the extra items to assist with ID on top of the spellbook gained in battle.

Are we headed back to Minas Tirith, then?

The party, now with a good escort heads back to the main camp. As the party is now mounted, it makes it back to camp by 8:30pm.

Deor can ID up to four items tonight.

War Axe of great quality (Behind Throne)
+3 to Hit and Damage, will not break under any normal circumstance.

Long Sword shining finely made Long Sword
+2 Long Sword

Large Shield from the same orc
+4 Large Shield and gives +4 saves vs. Dragon Breath, Cones of Cold, Lightning Bolts and similar area of affect spells. Not fireball obviously.

Mithril Figurine
This is an intricate magical toy. It can be set to fly and even breath fire. Usuable as a lighter. It can be commanded to glow twice per day for 30 minutes each time. Lights up a 30 foot radius. Whoever carries it will repulse insects from biting, stinging and swarming them. (There is at least one more power Deor could not ID)

So far, Ghân can only use the Mithril Figurine.

**Please minimize large full quotes. **

Does Ghân have a magic magnifier glass that aids detection? My notes are not available at he moment.

I also need to know which items **Deor **has.

Ghân has his original items, plus a (+2) Scimitar (which he doesn’t have weapon proficiency in!).

This is largely incidental, but before we start the next day, could I ask Ghân to Plant Growth Miron some ingredients for the paralytic balm that we talked about before the whole Vampire thing got started?

Ghân is happy to oblige, but Renee’s need for Athelas must take full priority.
Once we’re back in Minas Trith, with Deor working his way through Identify (and the Vampire dead ), there should be plenty of time for such preparation.

Up to **Glee **but sounds good to me.

Does the party do anything else back in camp?

Does it start back to Minas Tirith in the morning?

Riglo will be staying and will relay all the information to Caramir.

I am going to list the next four items now that will be Identified June 13th.
Probable Elven Pouch:
It is a pouch of Lothlorien and quite old. Dates back to the end of the second age.
It preserves contents for very long periods and halves the weight. If an herb lasted 10 days normally, in the pouch it will last 100. Cheese and hard tack (and Lembas) never go bad and even Goodberries would last 10 times longer.

Armor is high quality well made black chain mail
+3 Chain: A finely made Black Númenórean set of chain mail. It is light wieght and durable. It is an unknown alloy. Could be slept in occasionally, but not as a habit.

Ring: A simple Gold ring from the Orc King.
Ring of Warmth: A warmth ring provides its wearer with body heat even in
conditions of extreme cold where the wearer has no clothing whatsoever.
It also provides restoration of cold-sustained damage at the rate of 1 hit
point of damage per turn. It increases saving throws versus cold-based
attacks by +2 and reduces damage sustained by -1 per die.

Ruby Pendant:
This Elenwë was able recognize. It belonged to an Elven Prince of Lothlorien that perished in the Last Alliance. His betrothed gave it to him as a token and to protect him. In this it failed. She long ago went over the Sea to the West.
It gives +2 AC and Prot (but not with armor), +4 saves vs. Fire and allows Sword to Flame doing an extra d6 of damage and is +3 to hit undead doing 2d6 damage. This last ability can be used once a day for 14 minutes.

This rings a bell. I’ve PMed you the other details.

Just for note, here was the division of magic items from last time.

Division of items:
Theogrim: the +2 Two-handed Sword of Wounding and no gold
Gil-Gandel: The Magic Belt of +3 AC & +1 saves and may not be worn with Armor
Brin: The large Pouch of reduced weight. (50%) and it protects its contents unless the pouch is destroyed.
Mulligan: The Smoking Powder to be turned into 30 small smoke bombs.
Ghân: The Magical Magnifying Glass that gives +1 levels to Detections and IDs.
Deor: The Spell Books, The Magic Ruby (not a ring) that help ID, magic inks, silver pens, blank scrolls and possibly the Luckstone & Pearl, but then no share of gold.

Somehow, those smoke bombs did come in useful.

Hmm… an old Elven item that has a romantic history, suits someone who doesn’t wear armour, and is highly suitable to someone who is good at hitting things with swords but doesn’t care to get into hand-to-hand too often.

twitches slightly, but not in a blatantly greedy manner

I haven’t checked the previous thread, but the last division of magic items was around post 142 of this one; Thoroncir got both the (+2) Chain and the (+2) Bow.

DM, please could you help us keep track by putting a post copy in the Setup thread each time we find Magic items?

Ghân suggests that we put the items where they can do the most good, rather than try to keep ‘fair shares’.
We do pretty well out of succeeding in our missions!
If he does have the Magical Magnifying Glass, he’ll give it to Deor, because Identify is one of our most important spells.

Ghân speaks wisely. How do you like the look of that Lothlorien pouch? Carry twice the herbs and have them (and Goodberries) keep ten times as long?
