As an alternative, since I don’t think anyone has mentioned the nice +2 long sword, maybe Gwaelur could take a look at it and determine if it could be resized to Hobbit size without destroying the balance and enchantment. Sizing and balancing it as close to Sting would be an added bonus. If so, that might be a perfect solution as I think the dagger (item 14) would be a great stabby tool for Mulligan.
Ghân notes that the Stone, Figurine and Dagger from the Vampire lair all radiate faint evil and in combination damaged Deor for 12hp.
We should get them completely identified in Minas Tirith before using them.
Hodwain should get a share.
Ghân will definitely pass the Magnifying Glass to Deor.
Identify is the most difficult spell to use and the most important.
Ghân thought he already had the (+2) Scimitar, but he’s not bothered, since he has no proficiency in it.
Ghân would prefer by far 15 (if not evil), then 6 (if not evil), then 12.
(Presumably anyone can carry 7 and it will benefit the whole party. Renee carries a lot of herbs, doesn’t she?)
Ghân thinks we have more than enough missile specialists (Gil-Gandel + the hobbits are Scouts too), so it would be good if either Miron or Brin used the Chain Mail for melee.
As mentioned previously.
So, either of the daggers will suit me fine. That would be 11 followed by 14.
Ghân does have a +2 Scimitar from earlier on. There has been at least divisions of treasure before this one.
-
The Stone, will retain a taint longer, but it will affect you the least.
-
The Mithril Figurine is already clean. It could not remain tainted for long. However, it should not be with the other items from the Vampire. It does need a further Identify as noted above.
-
Elven Pouch is empty. It held some coins. It is excellent for any herbalist.
**appleciders **make a note that Ghân is giving Deor the Magnifying Glass, it lets you cast Detection and Identify at +1 level. Very nice of Glee.
I agree, but keep in mind that Brin is leaving the party unless I hear something soon. Speaking of which, if you don’t escort Hodwain to Rhûn, you might need a replacement and it might be good to get a mêlée specialist.
CatInASuit, OK you’re easy to please.
RogueRacer No chance of modding a +2 long sword into a usable weapon for you. Sounds like 14 is open for you though.
I don’t think the Hobbit should overlook staking a claim on the miscellaneous item like the Ring, Pendant or Figure.
It looks as if Renee should definitely get the pouch for her herbs.
Since Ghân already has a (+2) Scimitar, he will drop all claims to the second one!
As for the spell-storing stone, Ghân calmly mentions that if he gets it, there will always be a **Neutralise Poison **available. This spell has saved party members several times…
As Miron has expressed an interest in the Chain Mail, it would be good to have him as our third melee chap.
Renee is fine getting the Pouch and Ghân the stone. She sees you putting it to more overall use as she has a smaller spell selection. The pouch would fit her needs nicely.
Miron getting Chain is a good call, as a Ranger he is slightly better suited to mêlée than Gil-Gandel, especially when fighting Orcs and Wargs. Though he has no magic swords.
It looks very much like Hodwain will get the Spear and the Scimitar might be sold for Riglo.
Deor is absolutely fascinated by the figurine (6), and would love to be able to take that as his share. Failing that, he’s interested in the Ring of Warmth (9) or possibly either the knife (11)or dagger (14), though only if neither of the hobbits wants one of them- the knives will see much more use in their hands.
No, Ghan should carry it while adventuring, then I’ll take it for the end-of-adventure ID sessions. It’s a generous offer, but there’s no reason for one of us to miss out, right? I don’t want to take that much of your loot from the first adventure, and I rarely cast Detection spells during missions anyway- it’s mostly you and Renee.
For that matter, I’ll take the magnifying glass and give that figurine one more look, see if I can’t get anything out of it before we have to take it to my professor in Minas Tirith and pay him an arm and a leg for help. Though I think we’ll still have to get them looked at by some authority to see if the evil taint can be removed.
Hodwain has definitely earned a share, and I’d suggest letting him have the spear, as he requested. No one else seems to particularly want it, anyway. And selling the scimitar for Riglo seems fair as well.
Well, no one has spoken for the +2 long sword yet. I have no objection to Miron taking that as part of his share too- the money we could sell it for isn’t worth the gain the party would enjoy.
Oh well, can’t blame me for asking. Regarding the ring, pendant, and figurine, I agree that they could be useful to Elfstan or Mulligan. The ring seems pretty situational. The pendant could be very useful, but much more for Mulligan than Elfstan who will pretty much always be wearing the mithril coat (if I’m understanding how the no armor thing works). The figurine could be quite handy for a treasure finder indeed. I would have mentioned it except my faulty memory thought that was Renee’s choice. I see now that she was also interested in some of the other items including the ring. So, consider Elfstan to be interested in that or the dagger.
The dagger brings up another question though. I’ll take it to the setup thread.
Since things have settled into a routine of travel and nightly camps, Elfstan will take this time to do several things. First, Sting will get a very thorough cleaning and polishing, making sure to remove not only the last specks of the orc and vampire blood, but also any lingering grease paint that may be left on the blade or in the scabbard. When possible, he will join in any weapons practice in the evenings. Naturally this is after helping Mulligan to make sure that we all have something edible to eat.
During travel when Elfstan is near Gil-Gandel, Miron, and possibly Renee, he will ask them to help him expand his very limited Elvish vocabulary. Although he can’t make the words sound as musical as when they speak them, it fascinates Elfstan just the same. Last and most important, since he’s likely to be riding near Mulligan often, they will practice signs and signals to help them work together silently both when visible and while keeping themselves concealed.
Choices so far:
- Renee is interested in the 15) Stone, 7) Elven Pouch, 6) Mithril Figurine or Ring of Warmth.
- Brin is interested in the 4) Long Sword +2 or maybe one of the sets of chain mail though he normally disdain’s armor.
- Gwaelur: 3) The +3 two handed War Axe
- Gil-Gandel: 10) Ruby Pendant, 6) Mithril Figurine or 9) Ring
- Glee: 15) Stone or 6) Mithril Figurine
- Miron: 8) +3 Chain:, 9) Ring of Warmth, or 14) dagger
- Deor: figurine (6), Ring of Warmth (9), the knife (11)or dagger (14),
- Mulligan: the knife (11)or dagger (14),
- Elfstan: the knife (11)or dagger (14),
- Thoroncir: 5) Shield +4 and 2) Strong Bow +2
- Hodwain: 13) The Spear.
- Riglo will take a left over item.
Usually I say try to work out first choices and then troubleshoot the rest.
As Renee will step down to the Pouch that would resolve:
Renee Pouch
Brin +2 Long
Gwaelur +3 two handed War Axe
Gil-Gandel Ruby Pendant
Ghân Stone
Miron +3 Chain
Deor the Mithril Dragon Figurine
Mulligan the knife +3
Elfstan +2 injection Dagger
Thoroncir Shield +4 & Strong Bow +2
Hodwain Spear +1
Leaving
- Magic Chain mail Dol Amroth +2
- Ring of Warmth Maybe a Hobbit or Renee could get this as their picks are fairly minor.
- +2 Scimitar
Riglo would probably get the +2 Scimitar.
We could then either sell the Magic Chain which would probably bring a nice share of value to the party or give it to a party member.
It’s all good. See, we’re reasonable people!
I still wonder what the mithril figurine’s other secret power is…
If nobody minds, I will take the ring of Warmth as well.
It will keep the Wildcat warm if nothing else.
Miron is happy to take on more of a tank role at need, especially with his new chainmail, and if it becomes a frequent thing he would be happy to spend some of his own money at the next town to buy an appropriate pair of shortswords.
Hey now elf, we already have a tank…me. Feel free to take on an armoured Humvee type role though.
Would Mulligan consider take the Injector Dagger then? Elfstan will never use it’s special ability and I think you would. That would also adjust with the Ring better.
I know, I know, overwatch is a wonderful thing. I was mainly replying to What?'s comment about rangers being slightly preferable to bards when it comes to getting hit with various pointy objects.
As far as tactics go, though, I always envisioned Miron as a sniper with a first aid kit, so I can assure you that he’s far happier scouting, finding enemies, and then finding things to fatally poke them with, preferably from extreme range.
For the record, I’m perfectly fine either way. I just wanted to hash out the roleplaying part of it over in the other thread. I would like Elfstan to have a stabby thing that doesn’t glow or remain visible though.
The Ring could either be sold, or given to whoever is most likely to be blasted by a Cold spell. I assume this is a spellcaster…
(Even though Ghân loves animals, using a powerful item for an animal companion is not good value for the party!)
I’m all for keeping it, especially since we could easily come into contact with more undead in the future.
Of course we keep it, and someone sentient should wear it. The cold protection itself is good; the regeneration of cold damage is excellent. But anyone might get blasted by a cold spell. I’m not too worried myself as I have phenomenal saves between the items I already have and my excellent Dex.
I really don’t think CatInASuit meant the cat would wear. Reparse it this way. Mulligan will wear it and thus stay warm and the cat will appreicate the body heat of the Hobbit.
Are we good with selling the second set of chain to give members some big spending cash? The share might be enough for Miron to get magic short swords. I imagine there are other needs by other members.
The armor will be much easier to trade/sell than the Ring.
