Midwest Meeting-Springfield, IL

Okay, the other thread kinda had a misleading title, so I decided to start a new one. This is not a plea for attention. (It’s more of a nicely worded request.)

Okay folks, anyone at all interested in getting together in the lovely town of Springfield, in February or March of next year? I know rasta is, and maybe we could coax lovelee down from Bloomington. For the St. Louis and Chicago Dopers, Springfield is a handy interstate trip on I-55. Interstate 72 also comes into Springfield. I can also give directions from the Quad Cities, so perhaps I could persuade Chris, Neo, and Cat to come down and give me a chance to prove that I’m not a complete prickweasel for missing Aura in St. Louis. (And yes, I am competent enough in States’ geography to know that Des Moines is not one the Quad Cities, but if they can get there, I can get them here.)

And, of course, anyone willing to make the trip from anywhere is always welcome.

I can also offer a couch/futon to the first three or four people who need a place to crash, if necessary. Again, rasta, even if we get nobody else responding, get in touch the next time you’re free to come up, and we’ll grab a bite and some beer.

carved the roast beast.”

Flyp…count me in. Just let me know when it is, and I’ll find a way out there. I wanna meet all you clowns…

But… but… Bloomington/Normal is so full of … fun and amusements… and insurance… and Veteran’s Parkway… and hotels… and… and… college town… and… bars… and…

whimper

My car is less-than-reliable.

It goes without saying, but just for clarification: I will be there. Name the date, place and time.

Wait a bloody minute here. Flypsyde, are you here in Springfield?!

Oh, and you can probably count me in (hell, I don’t have to go anywhere) as long as it’s not one of the weekends around then when I’ll be up in Chicago (cousin’s getting married, has showers, etc.)

David B-Yep. Slaving away over here on West Jefferson. Rasta and I are thinking D’Arcy’s, in Town and Country. Probably not until late February, though. I’ll keep things current.

“And he, he himself, the Grinch,
carved the roast beast.”

As Aura heard last night…my plans to come out there have hit a snag. A 10-hour drive of a snag. I’ll see if I can figure this out somehow…still plan on counting me in, though.

Flypsyde: E-mail me (if you want) and tell me where ya are (more detail, that is). Where is Rasta?

Were you ever active on computer BBSes before they all got killed off by the Internet and WWW?

Rastahomie is in Bourbon, Missouri - 75 miles west of St. Louis. I grew up in Springfield (SSHS 88); my 'rents still live in Loami. I have a ready-made excuse to go there anyway, and I have a place to stay.

“Hey Torquemada, whaddya say?
I’ve been away at the auto-da-fé.
Auto-da-fé? What’s an auto-da-fé?
It’s what you oughtta not do, but you do anyway!”

Wow! Looks like our meeting’ll have a moderator there; this may rival the NYC meetings, with TubaDiva. (Well, maybe not, but a small-town boy can dream, can’t he?)

David, check your mail; and since I realized that I forgot to answer your last question in it, no, I wasn’t active on any BBSs (local or otherwise).

And lovelee, it’d be several degrees beyond cool if you could make it. Same goes for Falc, and Aura as well. And, of course, anyone else who wants to come. (Please read the last sentence in a grovelling, whiny voice. Thank you.)

“And he, he himself, the Grinch,
carved the roast beast.”

As long as we plan around when I have to be in Chicago, and as long as I get permission from Mrs. B (hey, I may moderate here, but we all know who’s in charge at home  ), it sounds good!

But I have to warn you, the last time we had a computer-related get-together in Springfield (with FidoNet folks from across the country), one guy got arrested by Southern View police for assaulting a police officer! We have some wild parties here!

(The charges were later dropped because the officer was fired for other reasons and had pretty much made up those charges as well, so nobody has to worry about that and it should not change anybody’s mind about coming here. )

I’ll be there, as long as it’s not on a day I have to work. Do we have a date and time yet?

Laugh hard; it’s a long way to the bank.

Yeah…could we possibly pick a weekend? It’ll be easier to figure out what the hell I’m doing if I know when. PLUS, my parents want to come visit me then…and I really don’t want them to come, so driving out to see y’all would be a LOT more fun!

“Jesus Mary Joseph…you’re a biker chick!” - co-worker, upon hearing of my tattoo.

Jeez, you want to pick a weekend 2-3 months in advance?! Who’s that organized?

Ok, I know that the weekend of Feb. 12 and 19 are bad for me. Dunno about any others. But then, I don’t have to drive very far, either. < g >

OK, I’m not the host, but I’ll break the ice and suggest a date & time.

Sat, Feb 26th, 2000. 7:30 PM at D’Arcy’s in Town & Country Shopping Center.

Any objections?

“Hey Torquemada, whaddya say?

Auto-da-fé? What’s an auto-da-fé?
It’s what you oughtta not do, but you do anyway!”

I’ll have to get back to you, but I’m a short drive north and may be persuaded to make it down, assuming there will be drinking going on. I need very little notice, and it may boil down to a couple of nights before to make up my mind, but you can pencil me in for a round if things come to fruition.

Rasta – sounds ok to me on first glance. I’ll have to check with The Holder of the Calendar at my house (like I said, we know who’s really in charge). I’ve never been to D’Arcy’s but have heard good things about it. And it’s all of 10 minutes (on a bad traffic day) from my house, so if I don’t like you guys, I can just skip out and go home.

Oh fine, rasta, just rip the reins right outta my hands…

The 26th’s fine by me.

All right…after some persuasion from Omni and Flyp in the chat room, I’m in. (Which means you’d better show, Omni!!!)

Flyp…that futon still free?? I’m going to need to crash somewhere…

Whooppeee! So, now confirmed attendees are

[ul][li]Flypsyde (your gracious host)[/li][li]David B (ever the Voice of Reason)[/li][li]Falcon (obligatory fair damsel)[/li][li]rastahomie (who better damn well be ready to choke down a horseshoe with me)[/ul][/li]
Okay, sods, it’d be really bad form for Falcon to drive out here and anyone who’s closer to not show up. So, I renew my invitation to all who wish to come. One of the futons is taken, but there’s still another plus a couch to be had at Flyp Arms. So, Aura and lovelee, should we expect you, or will you be otherwise detained?
