Mike Myers really making the circut for "Love Guru"

Rotten Tomatoes is giving it a 15%. That doesn’t always mean anything for me, since I agree with them as often as I don’t. But most of the commentary seems pretty spot on.

Sheepishly raising hand.

I saw it today. It was every bit as bad as it looked in the trailers. It’s exactly what you expect from the trailers. It’s like a movie made from a bad SNL character. The character isn’t funny. At all. The story is uninteresting. The wit and sparkle from the Wayne’s World and Austin Powers movies is completely absent. There are a couple of minor running gags which are amusing, neither of which have anything to do with Myers. One is Stephen Colbert’s cameo as a peyote munching hockey announcer, the other is a recurring graphic from the mock television coverage of the hockey, which kind of spoofs the butting hemets on Monday Night Football, but takes it several steps further with the little team logos doing increasingly violent things to each other.

Other than that, the movie lays there like a corpse. It’s only 90 minutes but it’s a punishing 90 minutes. It feels like 4 hours. The Happening is more entertaining and gets more laughs.

When I read that Jessica Alba plays the owner of the Toronto Maple leafs, I just knew that this movie would suck big time. Female owners of sports teams do NOT look like Jessica Alba. They look like Marge Schott.

Not necessarily…at least in the movies.

Mike Myers peaked out on SNL. It was perfect for him. Jim Carrey was great on “In Living Color”. He is getting rich but not better. The Coneheads movie was a mistake.
Other than “The Blues Brothers” what movie success (not money making) has come from SNl alums? They sell extended sketches.

Mmm… Eddie Murphy has certainly kicked some serious box office ass and made quality films to boot. Not the latter day gross out latex comedies so much, but Coming to America and Trading Places and some of his others were the work of a comedy genius. (It almost pisses me off he was so accoladed for his work in DREAM GIRLS- he was good, but anyone who can do brilliant comedy can do drama, while I can’t think of two other people who could take even the low brow Nutty Professor movies and make them 1/20 as funny as he did.)

^^ and Beverly Hills Cop and 48 Hours. Murphy used to be terrific before he became All About the Makeup/Fat Suits.

Also, Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine… was brilliant. The guy has chops, and I hope he does more interesting stuff like that.

My only question is: WTF is Stephen Colbert doing in this? A guy with his cachet and class shouldn’t be slumming, unless he and Myers are best buds. Were he and Myers in Second City together or something? (Then again, Myers would’ve been from the Canadian version, no?)

Colbert is still an actor, even if he has a popular show on a cable network that most people don’t watch. There’s no reason he shouldn’t take a role/paycheck that’s offered to him.

Jim Carrey isn’t an SNL alum, other than having hosted.
Bill Murray, now, is an alum that’s made both successful and great movies.

Ratings are not up; not surprisingly it’s not doing well. Currently it’s 4.9 with 1008 votes.

I haven’t seen it and–judging from the reaction it’s getting–don’t plan to. One thing I’ve noticed from the previews and the clips they’ve been showing on talk shows is that you can’t tell if Myers’ character is supposed to be either a sleazy (but somewhat savvy) New Age huckster or a naive holy man. Is this distinction made any more clear in the movie?

Also, when I first read about the project and the storyline, I assumed Jessica Alba was playing the women who runs off with Justin Timberlake’s character. As it turns out, she’s playing the owner who hires Myers’ guru and ultimately has a relationship. I get the impression that aside from being obvious eye candy, there’s no reason for Alba to be in the movie since her character is utterly superfluous. Is my hunch correct?

And most importantly, how long is the scene with Justin Timberlake in the Speedo? :stuck_out_tongue:

A person whose opinion I trust when it comes to movies said that two things were notable: Justin Timberlake was the best thing about it, and as a whole it was even worse than Battlefield Earth. She also said that, just like there was no Highlander II, Stephen Colbert was NOT IN THIS MOVIE, LA LA LA I CAN’T HEAR YOU.

Rumor also has it that Mr. Myers is playing Prima Donna on this circuit - pitching screaming fits at an assistant who brought him the wrong brand of seltzer, for instance.

I’d go see Austin Powers IV, Shrek IV, Wayne’s World III, even (maybe especially) So I Married An Axe Murderer II and DEFINITELY Sprockets I! I will not go see The Love Guru I or Cat in the Hat II (and Mike Myers owes me a time machine so I can go back and unsee Cat in the Hat I).

Oh yeah, I’d also go see Lothar of the Hill People and Middle-Aged Man movies.

Myers’ character is essentially sincere, not a con artist. He’s perpetually horny because of a chastity belt he’s worn since he was 12, but he’s not dishonest or sleazy.

Yes, Alba is just in it to be eye candy and to be a nominal love interest for Myers.

Austin Powers IV will, if written, be Dr. Evil I, according to Meyers.

The weekend BO so far has Guru in 4th behind the already-in-release K.F.Panda & I.Hulk and getting its ass kicked by Get Smart (with a per/screen average more than double the Myers film). If it’s lucky, it’ll end up pulling in Drillbit Taylor numbers.

Which is what the third (or second, IMO, I couldn’t stand Fat Bastard, and Powers was always 2nd to Dr. Evil in humor) should have been.
